Whats involved in getting your CAA Class 2 Medical - UK Private Pilot License

In order to fly a plan in the UK with a Private Pilot License you need a class 2 medical license. I choose Gloster Aviation Medicals Ltd as my Aviation Medical Examiner, so I thought I would share the process I went through to get my medical sign off as part of my journey to getting my private pilot license.

Medical tomorrow and fortunately my partner is an ANP so been checked over before I even go including my urine lol, blood pressure checks done and ecg was checked so I’m good to roll.. fingers crossed 🤞

I just checked on the CAA website, a BMI of 35 or greater requires further investigation. You can see the flow chart here - www.caa.co.uk/media/pt5l3li3/obesity-fc.pdf

Hey mate, I got my UK PPL and I have since moved to the USA. It seems like I can self declare now and that will keep my ppl valid. Would you happen to know if this is the case. I couldn’t find much online.

The ability to self declare was ended by the CAA in April 2020 is my understanding. So is no longer possible. This is my belief anyway. Congrats on getting your PPL.

Hey, not sure if you’re still responding but is it possible you could elaborate on the hearing side? I have moderate-severe hearing loss in my right ear and I was wondering if that impacts my medical at all. Did they test ears individually, or was it just tests from around you? I’m fine hearing noises a decent distance away but it’s virtually impossible if it’s only into my right ear. Thanks.

The hearing test was not like I have had at the doctors for a medical in the past, where you put on headphones and have to respond to sounds in each ear. The AME in this case just clicked his fingers, made noises around me, so not as scientific. If you have any concerns, this is why its important to get your medical first so you don't spend alot of money flying, only to later find out you can''t pass the medical.

Hi, just found your channel and thanks for the video on this subject.... I'm 49 and looking to embark on my journey soon. Any advise on the eyesight part of the test as i do wear glasses for close vision . I was told that there are commercial Pilots that do wear glasses.... Also what is the website to find local places to book such a medical test/ appointment here in the UK. . Thanks in advance.

Wearing of glasses is not an issue, one of my instructors wears glasses, and I know others with non perfect eyesight, but the AME will be able to provide more guidance. You can find your closest AME via the CAA website - www.caa.co.uk/commercial-industry/pilot-licences/find-an-ame/

What are the blood pressure boundaries?

I assume anything outside of what is considered normal. Mine was fine in the end, just seem to get anxious when being tested :) Normal blood pressure for most adults is defined as a systolic pressure of less than 120 and a diastolic pressure of less than 80.

I hold a 3rd class FAA medical and I would like to take my training in the UK? should I re do the medical test or the medical FAA is accepted??

I would assume you need the CAA medical if you are training, but I would check with your flight school to be sure.

According to the paperwork on the CAA website, it looks to be 35

@@SpectrumGeeks see right now my eye sight with glasses is ok and meets the standard, by BMI is 26.5 or something and I weigh 87kg but I’m overweight, I’m not obese but I’m scared

@@Pilot_Kushh Try not to worry, there is not really alot you can do other than wait and see what the AMI says. They don't do any fat checks, all these seemed to care about was BMI, even though my BMI is higher I don't have a mega high fat %. Also as you can see, I just had to do extra checks and then all signed off anyway, just extra stress for abit. Have you flown a plane at all yet? Can you get in the aircraft ok and operate the controls?

You forgot to explain how to apply online to get the authorisation to apply for a damn medical in the first place!

I didn't cover that, as the process is documented on the CAA website, where as whats actually covered in the medical with the AME is less clear. Sorry the video was of no help to you on this occasion.

I recommend it, as if any medical issues occur you will not be able to proceed with your PPL, also you need it before you go solo. So get it out the way, before spending thousands and then finding out you had something medical related that would ground you.
