With a small shop like mine, all tools need to be on wheels. The table saw is the largest tool in my shop and needs to be able to easily move around. The previous wheels on the saw weren't allowing me to easily move the table saw out, then tuck it back when i was done.
So i built a base that had 4 lockable caster wheels. This allowed me to move the saw from any angle.
Things to know are that the way i mounted the wheels did cause the height of the saw to increase about 3".

You sir - have a workshop like most of us. I see those gorgeous, perfect workshops that are magazine worthy, but I'll never have one of those. Like you I must move my tools around constantly to perform various operations as I build things. I spend more time dragging out and putting away (...or out of the way) larger power tools than I do machining wood. I like this video because it shows some creativity to allow for a tiny cramped workshop, yet make it somewhat functional and efficient. Sighhhhhhh. Hey - I still have fun making or fixing things in my garage! Hats off to you!

Thanks. Ya i was watching a car show the other day and they said "First thing is to get the car up on the lift" then proceeded to hoist the car 6 feet in the air. Then they removed the muffler and the old bolts looked brand new. Meanwhile most people are on their back, on the concrete, dealing with a rusted on bolt that's been there for 20 years.

I put my saw on wheels from day one. My rule of thumb is that if I cant carry it easily, it gets wheels. I made my base out of 4" angle iron, with 4" casters. I'm a tall guy and needed the added height, and the added 5 1/4" it added was perfect. I used tool box wheels on mine, all four wheels have locks but I went one step further and made the stand wider than the saw legs to each side, then I welded a 3/4" nut in each extension of the base, then I made bolts with T handles which act as landing gear. I move the saw where I need it, then a few turns of the four bolts, which are long enough that I don't need to bend down, and its fixed in place. The bolts don't have to lift the saw, they just anchor it. I often only lower the two front bolts but for big projects I set all four and get the wheels off the ground. I did the same for my out feed table, plus I built steel roller carts for my planer, and one jigsaw. My bandsaw and radial arm saw have factory style drop type bases .

I addressed the height problem on my table saw with inboard wheels mounted on a fulcrum that only raised the height by 1 total inch.

Thank you for the video. I am thinking something similar but half lap 2x4s, with a 1/4" plywood top. To your point though, will check the height of the base& casters first to make sure table saw surface is not too high.

Should have maybe thought of cutting the table legs 3 inches shorter, then build the caster set up to fit! It wouldnt be any higher than normal that way.

How do you keep the saw table from sliding off the base? I am planning to build one of these for my drill press and stand and have not come up with a way to keep it on the base without building a lip around the edge. Thanks! Great instructional video!

It has locking wheels. It works but isn't great. Im thinking of changing it so that can raise up onto the wheels, then drop down to the flat base

Tommy Johns: I have an old band saw base with splayed legs that I converted to use as a tool and accessory table when I roll out larger power tools. For a short while I had it on a piece of scrap thin plywood base with casters, and that worked OK for a while. Just last night it ragged out on me, so I now have a 3/4" ply base. This time I am making the base with a 3/4" margin all the way around, and put cleats in all 4 corners to capture/secure the splayed legs. This kind of forms the "lip" you are trying to avoid, but only where each leg sits on the plywood base, leaving no lip around the open edges so I can easily blow off sawdust when I clean up. That same base acts as a tool rest for larger tools like a circular saw or router. I'll try to put each caster directly under each leg to spread the load. I use locking casters because my driveway is sloped and I don't want this flying down my driveway!!!

Why not simply get threaded rod castor wheels and put them through the bolt hole in the bottom of the existing legs?

Did you secure the kegs to the platform or just sitting with weight?

I always intended to bolt it to the dolly...it's been 2 years and i haven't done it yet. Knock-on-wood, luckily nothings happened and it hasn't fallen off or anything.

thanks~ just apent 2 hrs yesterday adding wheels to the metal platform at my base to find I can't get the wheels to turn 360 degrees ~ I'll try your method ~ You mentioned recessing the wheels to keep it at 38" high ~ How do you do that?? Thanks Ross g

Ya i wish i would have built it so that the table was lower. It's too high how i built it. You need to make the frame so that the wheels aren't under the legs, but next to it. So that the bottom of the wheel is just 1/2" below the bottom of the leg. The way i made it, you have the leg, then the board, then the wheel. Which adds like 4" to the height of the saw. (again, it's too high) And having wheels is a pain when you are cutting and the whole thing starts to move and roll away. I need the wheels in my small shop, but i would build it differently next time.

The one thing I wanted to see you didn't film - how the hell do you get the saw up on the base? I think I'd need something like an engine hoist to do that :-)
