I agree, Chris. I have never been a coffee person and I gave up sodas 8+ years ago. Caffeine is just not a part of my life. Think I'm better for it. Hard to say. I do have some fond memories of being a kid in the 70s and hearing my father make coffee every morning. Hearing the coffee maker gurgle, smelling it. A few years ago I watched "13 Reasons Why" and was surprised by the teenagers hanging out at a coffee house. Then I learned that my nieces like to visit Starbucks and consume those special mix drinks. Ugh.

I quit caffeine 2 years ago. It was a nightmare. The addiction is totally underestimated. Withdrawal was crazy. But it was worth it. My gastritis went away (I was suffering from gastritis for years, and all I had to do was quitting caffeine). It turns out that caffeine is very pro-inflammatory. My cardiac arrhythmias also went away. Started to sleep well at night. My personality changed: I became less nervous, less edgy, started to like mornings ( which I hated while being on caffeine), became a nicer, calmer person:). So I must say that you don't really know your real "self" until you get to know your "caffeine-free self". Today I eat occasionally small amounts of 100% chocolate, but it has very small amounts of caffeine.

When coffee just isn't cutting the mustard, my personal trick is to crush up No Doz tablets with a mortar + pestle, suspend that shit in aloe vera gel & rub it into my hands. When I quit coffee, I found the major difference was my second wind. I would typically work my 9-5 and be tired at the end of the day. I would workout and spend the whole workout tired, go home and be tired, then laze around until bed time. When I quit, I would still be tired after the 9-5, but at the gym I would get all of my energy back after a couple sets. Then I would get home and have reserve energy for cleaning and hobbies. Without coffee, my energy would be steady throughout the day and able to be boosted on demand.

I quit coffee about 18 months ago because it really wrecked my digestion (let’s just say it, diarrhoea!) and I can say it definitely took more than a month to feel “normal” again. The main benefit I see now, besides much better digestive habits, is I don’t have the 3:30 afternoon crash like I used to, I can get through the whole day at work without feeling like I need another boost - tea, sugar etc - in the afternoon. But if you don’t have any real reason to quit coffee then don’t!

I had a friend who is an amphetamine addict. After two years on not using drugs, he comes in to the realization, that he has more energy and feel better and happier after his drugs. So he decided to going back to using again. I know that it is not the same, but i can see some similarities. The true is that life without stimulants will never provide as huge dopamine release as drugs (including caffeine). The lesson is that some doors is better left unopened. As you experience instant extra release of pleasure after drugs, you will never be equally happy without it like you were before, because the bar, which represents your normal everyday state of wellbeing, is hanging so much higher. It's your decision, if you want to drink cafe to the rest of your life to be able to feel "normal"? But I think that the fact that I have to consume caffeine, to be motivated to everyday chalanges, should be alarming. Regards from Poland ;-)

For every time that you feel uplifted, there is the possibility of feeling down as well. So the problems with caffeine to me are the mood and energy swings. Instead of having a lot of energy at the start of the day and having it decline slowly, you will feel energetic mostly after having coffee. This is just like a regular drug addiction if you ask me.

The most infuriating thing is that whenever I go through withdrawals from caffeine my family will say “oh caffeine is only in your system for 24 hours so after that withdrawal will end” and people use that as a way to undermine a caffeine addiction. I got over my addiction a year ago after months of painful withdrawals and cravings, and I was told that it wasn’t a big deal because “two cups of coffee a day isn’t really an addiction” or “you can’t really call caffeine an addiction” which got me right back on the stuff because people were just making me feel bad AB it. Caffeine addictions need to be taken more seriously. It’s literally a psychoactive drug that can cause anxiety, insomnia, and heart attacks
@thorin1045
@thorin1045 3 жыл бұрын
If caffeine is in your system for 24 hour, than the withdrawal will start after that, not end. Until that point you have it, after that is your body realize, something is wrong. And that part is the physical addiction part, which can be really bad to break, but will be done in a few days, a week or two at most. But the mental part, the fact that your reward system was wired to that stuff, so without it it simply do not work, and need to retrain itself to work properly without the no longer present stuff.

That day I quit all caffeine drinks, Coffee, sodas etc. In less than two weeks my condition improved and I've not had anything but De-caffeinated drinks since. I have one cup of Decaf coffee in the morning and drink a lot of decaffeinated tea for a cool drink. One cup of regular coffee has 95 grams of caffeine. One glasswork of tea has 27 milligrams. I used to drink ~5 cups a day until I learned how caffeine works and that it doesn’t give you more energy. When I didn’t have coffee I’d be pissy and fuck everything up at work, and I was tired of trying to find some place that sells coffee at 4AM in the morning so I wouldn’t fall asleep behind the wheel of my truck. Two months after quitting I’m feeling naturally energized/productive, my mood & energy level is stable through the day and most of all way I’m way less anxious in social situations. I never thought it would make such a big difference, because the effects of the drug itself are so mild.

Something similar can happen to me during days off from work. Even though, on those days, I should theoretically need less coffee (since I get a nice long sleep; unlike on work days.) It reminds me that coffee isn't just a way to get caffeine, but also a learned habit to relieve stress or distract my mind I suppose. Unlike at work, where I might be too busy to keep grabbing coffee to distract me from feelings of stress, apathy, etc: at home it's not an issue. Generally if you're at home, and you want a coffee, you can make it and drink it right then and there. Then couple that with many folks being on quarantine, where they might feel a combination of boredom and stress all day long: it makes sense to constantly reach for that coffee to comfort themselves. My usual method to grapple with this is to replace it with something similarly hot and tasty - but without caffeine. So that I'm satisfying that oral fixation without upping my daily caffeine intake too greatly. Herbal tea, hot cocoa, etc. (Though watching this video reminds me that yes, indeed, chocolate also has caffeine. Still way less than coffee.)

I used to have coffee everyday, sometimes twice a day. However, I stayed over at a friends for a few days who didn’t drink coffee, and I wasn’t about to go out and buy coffee lol. So that resulted in bad headaches and crankiness for days on end. I decided since I’d gotten that far, I would stay off it for as long as I could and see what happened. Fast forward a few months and now I’m an occasional coffee drinker. I like that I don’t have to rely on something to make me feel alright and get me through the day, and I don’t get with-drawl but I get the benefits. Only downside is it can make me shaky and all seeing as my body isn’t completely used to it.

I had to seriously lower my caffeine intake due to caffeine sensitivity. I can only have one small cup or one caffeinated soda a day. Trust me, u do eventually get your full energy back but it takes more than a month. It took me about 3 months & now I have REAL energy (not artificial) with no crash. I also sleep soooo much better & wake up very alert.

I had to quit caffeine due to a panic disorder I was recently hospitalized for. In the long run I'm much better for it. My pulse is steadier and stronger, and honestly it's incredible to not have to go throughout the whole day thirsty for it. I don't drink soda, I don't drink caffeinated teas, I don't drink coffee, and once I got over the initial withdrawal I feel amazing.

I really wish people doing these challenges would drink decaf instead. Everyone quits all coffee then tells everyone not to quit cause they miss the flavor lol. I was a 30oz mug a day drinker of full caffeine cold brew, and switched to decaf because (surprise) that kind of thing made my already anxious self MUCH more anxious. That was last September, and I’ll never go back.
@Shalama
@Shalama 4 жыл бұрын
Decaf still has caffeine. It's just a little, but it could be enough to make the experiment useless. They already tried to avoid chocolate as well. If you are drinking decaf now, you are essentially microdosing caffeine.
@owmahdah
@owmahdah 4 жыл бұрын
Shalama_ absolutely, but it’s nearly nothing compared to full strength coffee, let alone cold brew and espresso drinks. Drip coffee can contain upwards of 70 mg in a single cup, where decaf is around 7 mg. In Craig’s case it would take his average intake from 140 mg to 14 mg daily (assuming an 8oz mug was all he was drinking, and my favorite cup is 15oz lol) which is SIGNIFICANT. The average healthy adult can handle up to 400 mg of caffeine daily without experiencing dangerous side effects, so he’s still fine at 140mg, but I just think it would make a fairer video.
