I think he just didn't have a solid plan. He abandoned a & b pawn attack and switched it up, usually leads to lose of time and the game.

Anand as a super GM, in an oversight , lost in record 6 moves against Zapata. Capablanca lost a queen to Indian Mir Sultan Khan's knight by error and resigned immediately. A temporary loss of concentration / calculation ! They are humans at the end of day , not engines. Then Magnus in front / an intimidating factor like Garry in his prime.
