This week, we're watching the #1 movie on most lists: When Harry Met Sally!
On this channel, my wife and I will be watching rom-coms. Why? Because they always bring a smile to our faces and make us feel warm and fuzzy inside. Well, for me anyway. My wife, on the other hand, loves to poke fun at the cheesy plotlines and over-the-top love stories. But that's just part of the fun for us.
So grab a bowl of popcorn, some tissues (for those tearjerker moments), and join us on our rom-com binge-watching journey!

For me it’s the dialogue. No romcom before or after has matched Nora Ephron’s witty dialogue.

The repartee was definitely entertaining! Can see elements of that in a lot of rom coms that followed. Or at least, pretty good attempts.

One of, if not my favourite movie ever...and I’m a big Scottish guy! Great choice! Great script from start to finish. One tip, watch it again without chatting and just listen to the one liners!

We see a generational shift here. The romcoms we love are not going to be liked by young folks. Here we are thinking, Hollywood romcoms peaked and ended on this genre in the nineties. Just so you know, we older folks didn't belabor the most existential questions in a romcom, we took them lightly, as mere clever plot points, to move a movie forward. It was just like how screenwriter Nora Ephron meant it, half serious, half jokingly. If you're a writer, though, the witty dialogue should be sufficient for you to really enjoy it. I think with your lukewarm reaction, you may need to shift to another genre for your reactions, as this was kind of a big movie back in the day. The movie is still no. 1 in Vanity Fair's Top 30 romcom list. Try watching any of these old romcom classics -- Roman Holiday, Notting Hill, Sleepless in Seattle, Only You, and if you just mildly like them, you will really need to look into reacting to another genre. To answer your question, Why is this the best romcom ever? I think it's not for you because you simply live in a different era, whereas we older folks lived in a more innocent time. Or we could see this movie plainly as a weekend fun movie, without reading too much into it, whereas young folks will not like why the female character is obsessed with marriage. :-) Good luck.

Haha I definitely think we dove into this one a bit too deeply. You’re right, there’s definitely been a bit of a shift - but when taking a step back and considering your perspective, I can totally see how fun it is! Great points! Haha. Love learning more about it 🙌

I saw this movie for the first time a few years ago, and it instantly became a favorite for me! I'm in my late 20s, so it's not an "era" thing for me, per se. I do agree that it's the dialogue that is so unique. It just feels like a classic. I do like how you all discussed things at the end. Personally, I've never been one to "need" to be in a relationship, but I acknowledge that it's extremely common for people to feel this need to be with someone. I've seen it from elementary school through college, and I have definitely observed it with adults who are older than me. Best wishes on your channel!

Regarding the part of your discussion about women even today feeling the need to be with someone, and Sally's quote about how she didn't want to stay at the New Year's party if she didn't have someone to kiss.... I think for women it can be awkward, especially if you have a lot of friends who are coupled up or married already. If you're attending a party where everyone is couples, yeah, definitely as a single woman I'd feel a little left out, a touch of that kind of loneliness, wishing in that moment that I had someone to kiss at midnight and dance with and share things with, etc. I mean, picture being at a big party like that, and it turns midnight on the new year and everyone around you is kissing someone and you're just standing there like la la la.... (lol) Most times it doesn't trouble me, but on rare occasions like that, it crosses my mind, feeling that need or that loss or wish for someone in my own life. But I think in this film they took it to a more heightened state (especially in terms of Sally's best friend Marie, before she met Jess), for the comedy of it. Laugh at what you relate to or what makes you sad, you know? 🙂

Wow, you made this great movie about as fun as having hemorrhoids. Imagine having zero empathy for someone with no one to kiss on New Year's Eve when everyone else does, and she's standing there alone. It's the third wheel syndrome times a thousand. Male or female, it's awkward at the very least, and very painful when it's become the norm in your life. I don't usually make negative comments on KZfaq but, wow, you seemed to miss all the humanity in this.

Definitely hit a nerve with this reaction, for sure. If you’ve read any of the other comments, most people feel the same way. Haha. Really appreciate the feedback! Just not my cup of tea. But that said - honestly, I don’t think your comment was too negative. You make really great points; we’re just coming at it with different perspectives. And that’s okay. Will be approaching with a bit more empathy moving forward. 🙌

Good reaction...but per your comment around the 5:17 minute mark regarding 'formal attire on the flight', that's actually not accurate. In this particular scene on the flight, the formal attired people on that flight was meant to convey that they were business-people on work-related travel, and in business class. They were 1980s 'yuppies' (young well-paid jet-setting professionals on the fast-track for promotions etc).

Hellen...was big in the 80s and early 90s. Great in Necessary Roughness! And the coolest name in Hollywood ever. Harley Jane Kozack! Im not a huge romcom fan, and most have completely unbelievable situations or setups. That being said, this could very well be the best romcom ever. U would proly have to go back to a cary grant movie, to get better. Pro tip, the 2 guys were also in city slickers with a teen Jake gyllinhaal! The answer is no. If a man finds a woman attractive. And the best written script by a female ever, for a male dominated cast...Slapshot!!😅. Pro tips. The , ill have what shes having lady...the directors ma! The 4 way phone call scene, was shot in 3 different rooms, split screen added, simultaneously with no edits, because perfect timing was needed, it took 61 takes!😮😮. And yes hes the voice of mike in, Monsters Inc!😮😮😮

Question ? why do you cut the movie off early. you’ve done this on several movies this one and also on something goto give. Please stop cutting off the final scene. It’s very irritating. Sorry but somebody has to tell you. However you did a great job on Ted Lasso.

Hey Jarrett! Really appreciate you sharing this. These rom com reactions (which we are bringing back soon!) were some of the first we ever put out on KZfaq. So we were just learning how to do it, to be honest. Didn’t really know what to include and what not to. If I could make the vid again, with what I’ve learned, I would definitely make some changes! But I really appreciate you taking the time to watch with us. Hopefully it was still a bit entertaining even with the frustration at the end. 🙏🙏
