The last time I brought you back to 2009 to show you a semi-transparent phone, the label on the casing said “Sony Ericsson” and the clear part was the screen. This time around? The name on the box says “LG” and it’s the keypad that’s “Crystal” clear. I’m Michael Fisher and it took me many months to chase down a working LG GD900 on eBay; join me as I go hands-on with the twelve-year-old “LG Crystal!”

Phones were indeed fun back then, even if you didn't own one, just the sheer excitement of living in an era when the line between art and technology started to get blurred, owning to the fact I was just 8 years old back then, was quite amazing for me. Keep them coming, Mr. Mobile!

I was 12 when my parent bought me my first phone it was n-gage qd. To me it was the best phone i've ever had. Probably because of nostalgia factor but its true tho. I can still feel the excitement everytime i hold and play games on that phone. Good times

Good to have you back with another excellent video - You highlighted really well that micro period (basically 2009) of pre-smartphone smartphones; clunky interfaces, unresponsive touchscreens, tiny number of proprietary apps. It's actually a really interesting area because looking back we went from 'dumbphones' to android/iphones really quickly. I hope you can feature more of these devices that fell through the gap

Yeah, if you were lucky you get an operating system with a proper app market (symbian, maemo, a crazy thing that in Europe we know as "Vodafone 360", etc), otherwise you only got a bunch of pre-installed apps (basically Facebook, twitter and some unknown im services)

@@MattiaCavalloBr Some of those preinstalled apps were life-changing though! Like I said in the "Messaging Phones" episode of this series ... the whole reason I joined Facebook is because the LG Rumor had a preinstalled Java app for it! Haha

Given enough horsepower, touchscreen feature phones could end up alright. Samsung Jet / UltraTouch were pretty good, probably would have had one of those over a Nokia 5800, though IMO at this time these phones were mostly gimmicks and hype. The industry's turning point was mid year 2009, suddenly you could get a proper, big screen, fully capacitive real smartphone for the same price or less than these, and by the same time in 2010 you could get yourself an HTC Wildfire, a perfectly capable droid-based phone for less than $300. I really do miss this brief period in time, it was so exciting.

Ah 2009. A crazy time for phones. Non-standard operating systems, lagginess all around, so many different designs, etc. I remember a friend of mine had that keyboard phone at 9:04 too whereas I had the N95 8GB.

I owned the LG chocolate but it broke twice and the third time the battery overheated in my pocket. At that point the Chocolate 2 was out so Verizon offered me that one for free. Good times lol

The LG chocolate was the first phone I ever used lol. It was a hand me down from my mom and was hot pink in colour, so taking it to class was quite embarrising in the day haha.

I was the only one in my circle that owned one. The battery I believe where just two AAA in a battery pack. It was the first clam phone & had a satisfying sound when you opened/close it. It will be nice to see it again even if I'll never hold another one. I was 18 at the time, late 90s good times!!!!

I'll go back even further I had one that was like a cream color probably around 12 to 14 inches long in around 1990 looked like something that the bell workers that went up the poll to fix the wires connected with? Got it from my Ex Sister in Law, guess they didn't lock phones then I think the company was cell one? And after that was Primco!

This phone even with all it’s short comings was so innovative! I really enjoy all these blasts from the past mr.mobile! Side note: the ability to scroll on a page of text without obstructing the screen is something I miss to this day: I used to read so much on my nexus one with its trackball. Thank you for the hard work in putting together these fun and well thought out videos.

You can(on android) make your phone do that via the fingerprint sensor, sort of. You do need a bit of coding knowledge.

Well I must say, those pictures taken are not bad, for a Symbian phone standard. LG always go for a little bit of craziness all the time. That is why they are still one of my favourite brands. Also super audio speaker for a phone at those era.

You know what, despite being slow and jsut finding out about this model, it seems innovative and ahead of its time. My first android was a LG until got stolen. Love the ideas this phone has packed in, the camera even is decent quality for the time. Thank you for another great review, I love this series!

I had a similar LG phone around that time, with the slide out keypad. The standout memory for me is how my cat would react to the "swoosh" sound it made. She would come running from the other end of the house to investigate it. It was great. Also it had a really good poker game on it!

I still have my LG crystal in its original box. I remember seeing an ad of it in the newspaper in late 2009 and was very intrigued by the design. How time flies.. while modern phones are faster, have better cameras and are more reliable... I miss the era of 2009-2014 phones.

This is a really fun video, and the series too, I enjoy your videos so much. Yeah, even after 11 years, LG has achieved so much, going through so much- bringing Quad DAC audio, true pro grade camera capabilities, OLED display, powerful hardware, etc.- somehow keeping that innovation and practicality alive, which very few appreciates today. Great video as always! If you’re going to do an all LG classics, it would be nice to include the LG Chocolate and one (or both) of the LG Prada. LG Prada was said to inspire the first iPhone (although i have my doubts because of the time frame). Congratulations on this series of videos!

My mum used to have a BL40, which we still have somewhere. It actually turns on and runs alright still. I remember back then it seemed like the pinnacle of futurism, and to be honest even today it looks really quite beautiful. Look forward to seeing your future video on LG devices of the past! I genuinely think the BL40 deserves some attention even today, such a sweet little phone.

3:50 as an LG G8 user, a gentle reminder that the same hardware that enabled gimmicky hand gestures and palm unlock, that EVERY major outlet blasted in their review for being clunky, slow and useless... It also enabled genuinely useful 3D face unlock that was seamless, fast, and secure (even worked in the dark) at a time only iPhones had similar technology

I keep saying it, but another awesome video Michael. This took me back to such a nostalgic time in smartphones. The iPhone was new, but had a lot of limitations, and awesome phones like this and the LG Voyager proved other manufacturers had innovations of their own.

Finally you did it! I've been waiting for this phone to be reviewed by you. Its one of my favorite phone as it disguises it as if its a touchscreen phone then slides that mesmerizing keypad. This really reminds me of the Moto Krave on Verizon from around the same time period, except that was a flip phone where you could use the main capacitive screen through the glass(?) flip while the phone was closed., and stream live TV over the air. Never knew that LG made a similar endeavor

My daily driver is an LG Rebel 4. Not the fanciest smartphone, I know, but I love what LG brings to the table when it comes to phones. Back in the day, I owned a Motorola Krave(look into that one, Mr. Mobile. I think you'd appreciate it as it's nickname was 'the Star Trek phone', due to it's flip style). However, upon seeing this, I think I may have opted for this phone instead, had I known it existed. It definitely looked like a phone that was 'fun', and something that fit my preferences at the time. I love this series more than you know. Keep those videos coming.

This looks like phone meeting the best of both worlds. It's regular phone and smart -touch screen phone as well. High end camera like this reminds me of my older phone Sony Ericsson Xperia x10i made around 2009.

I hope you cover the LG enV. I had the 2 and touch. I loved the ability to open the phone and message. And if I am recalling right, the enV Touch had android software. Happy I came across this channel and these videos. Such fun to look back at these.

Before smartphones, I did own LG Shine and LG Vu. Also, I had, I think it was LG, a flip phone that did have have rotating camera. The camera was in between the display and the keypad.

Nice review, the Crystal was so much sought after, but only a few arrived in my country! It also hurts, that soon the LG G Flex and Flex 2 will be a part of this family (when phones were fun LG), since they never did revolutionize the industry, but they tried and had a really good approach!!
