How we treat each other at work has an enormous impact on how teams perform - with potentially fatal consequences if you work in healthcare. Chris Turner reveals the shocking impact of rudeness in the workplace, arguing that civility saves lives.
__
At TEDxExeter 2019 our theme was The Art of the Possible. We’re living in an age of polarity where many communities are feeling more and more divided, against a backdrop of increasingly populist politics which risk dividing us even further. Our talks offer an opportunity to pause and consider the future we want to create, the possibilities that may be obscured in the busyness of our everyday lives, and how we might get there. I can say with complete integrity this man practices what he preaches. What an amazing guy and a fantastic role model (even if you’re an angry AMU doctor at 2am!).

thank you Chris for reminding me as a self employed midwife that treating EVERY workplace colleague you might engage with face to face or otherwise (phone, email etc) deserve civility and kindness. Everyone benefits. Its really easy and cheap to administer (!) and the added benefit is that being civil and kind feeds back and makes us feel good too!

ZERO TOLERANCE IS THE ANSWER. Bullies and those in position of power supported by HR is the problem in the NHS. Heads of Departments look the other way while line managers and some consultants bully other employees. I am leaving the NHS after having worked in one particular hospital for 14 years where toxicity and hostile behaviour is the norm. I hold all those in power responsible for not promoting zero tolerance policy in the work place.

I am a 38 year Nurse in the NHS and I have seen what toxic cultures result in. This is the start when one healthcare professional disrespects another - empathy goes, barriers go up and the patient gets damaged in someway and it ends in blame and recrimination and a conclusion far away from the root cause, so it never gets addressed. Those that stay adapt to this culture and become part of the problem. Those with a bit more awareness leave and find somewhere a bit more enlightened. It is getting better with people like this guy but until cultures stop producing power structures that support the toxic workplace we are still far away.

Absolutely fantastic. Easy to listen to, keeps you engage and really hits home. We all know we have been in these sorts of situations at one point or another. Its great that we are getting evidence to underpin this and so we can work on changing culture around us. Inspirational. Thanks so much Chris :)

What is rather missing from the talk, though, is why anger and uncivility happens in these situations. The vast majority of the time it's down to stress and excessive workload. Sort that problem out and all teams, especially health care teams, will be far more effective.

Sometimes it is caused by stress but just look at the general behaviour in the community. Rudeness is so commonplace now

Stress and burn out accounts for occasional poor behaviour. However, cultural norms that encourage normalisation of toxic behaviour are a massive problem in the NHS.

I couldn’t agree more here. Incivility is rampant in Western culture and poor interactions influence poor outcomes. It does work like this.
