I run JD tractors. 4440 and 4640. Both had 20,000 hrs when cylinder sleeves started leaking coolant into the oil. Still had cross hatches on the sleeves. Could not see pulling them out putting new o rings in and not totally rebuilding engine. If i can keep farming i hope to get another 20 out of them....

We have a john Deere 6610 premium and got the engine rebuilt at 10 thousand hours as it was mixing oil and water. When we got it back john Deere said give it the hardest break in you can. It said pull the heaviest load possible for a 100 miles. So we did . We had it agitating slurry for a few days and then the big pull which was over 20 tons of concrete shuttering form work on a 40ft trailer. But on this journey it was unfortunately crashed and destroyed. It went upside and the engine started burning it's oil and blew.

Interesting how oil consumption changes when a truck goes from Over Highway use where speed, distance is the key, to being used on farm where it's under high loads, low speeds on soft roads, low speeds in softer fields where it can take all of the 400 HP to get out at 15mph.

I recently completed an “in frame” (Pistons, rings, rod and main bearings and injectors) on my 95 Dodge Cummins 5.9 at 335k miles. The reasons I rebuilt were three fold. 1) Blowby from the crank case breather had become excessive to the point of coming out from under the truck and being visible around the front fenders and hood. 2) It would smoke when started at 90 degrees ambient temperature as bad as it had at 0 degrees when I first bought it. This smoking would only stop when the truck was hot and cruising but would return almost as soon as the engine was at idle. 3) It was running/idling/starting rougher than was normal. When I got into the engine I found piston rings worn so badly that the end gap, which should have been .017”-027”, was between 3/16” and 1/4”! I was honestly surprised the engine was still running with what must have been terribly low compression. The cylinders were still round and were honed to remove the glazing before replacing pistons. (They could probably have been re-used but I didn’t want to risk anything) The bearings showed heavy, even wear but were not “damaged”. Rod and main journals were still pristine. Following the rebuild there is very little blowby, no smoke beyond the quick puff when it is started and runs smoother than the day I brought it home. I feel like by rebuilding when I did, I avoided the rings becoming so worn the pistons could have scored the cylinder walls. This video helped me pull the trigger on the “in frame”. Great expert, real world, advice.

If your replacing liner seals you should go ahead and do ring rods mains and new liners.reasoning for this to me is the fact that the most expensive part of shop work is labor. At 120+dollars an hour if there pulling sleeves youl save money in the long run to get the pistons and all other rebuild parts replaced.

My Cummins Big cam 400 started pushing water out of the overflow tube on top of the radiator. Lots of bubbles when I took the cap off while it was running. Head gasket? After finally taking it apart I found bad head gasket and a cracked piston where it had been leaking water. Bummer. Honestly if the truck wasn’t pushing water out I would never had known because the truck still ran perfectly. Now I get to learn how to fix it.

Anything else I should look for before I try again? It's been off the road for 6 years while I fix other stuff too. Thanks bro, was really worried after seeing blow by in my engine...
@kevincooley5201
@kevincooley5201 3 жыл бұрын
The only thing you need to worry about is your rod and main bearings that protects you from a core because when the rod goes and puts a hole in the in the block and destroys the crank your core is no good it's the course fall Decor has a lot of money so it's cheaper just to roll Rod means in it and even the shops won't rebuild or they will rebuild your engine but they will not guarantee and after 900,000 miles because the crank is a little bit egg-shaped so they like to do it around 800,000 miles and then no guarantee the rebuilt else otherwise they won't so if you can't afford a rebuilt at least throw grow rods and main bearings in it and protect your crank and block yeah the Pistons and valves those things can come unglued dundun do whatever damage the Piston sleeve whatever but that has nothing to do with your core so the head does a little bit but yeah I mean it's not a big deal

The diafram on the cdr is broken an I found some oil in the air filter compartment. Can I turn a new cdr valve a 180 degrees and plug the hole in the intake and put a hose from the new cdr to a oil cath can and then another hose to another oil cath can and do not reconnect it to the intake? Or what do you think is my best option? Right now with a bad cdr is smoking but if I desconect it the smog stop by I can see blow by. Thanks one more time for your videos.👍👍👍

But it needed a rebuild badly: - at least one broken/clogged injector, ran on 3 out of 4 cylinders. - head gasket already leaking - much other small stuff which was replaced since the engine was taken completely apart runs now just fine again and hopefully another 100-400k km

Hey big J! For the guys that need or want a complete engine overhaul, Wouldn't it be better to install a complete rebuilt engine instead of doing a complete In frame overhaul? Question On Cummins 8.3, I took it in for a skip with no check engine light on. Currently have my RV at the Cummins dealer, they said it dropped a lifter and needs a rebuild. That was after they replaced the injection Pump, Lift Pump and #3 Injector all at $9k now being told that I need a rebuild for $14k and they will eat $3k for the cost. Wondering why they did not check the compression at the start instead of putting on all these parts. They also said I might need a turbo if it's damaged from any metal in the system.

However blow-by (engine hot) is surprisingly low for those particular engines which says the engine is far from worn-out, so what could cause the low oil pressure? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I currently own a pet project that was our main delivery truck for the last 300,000 Km. It’s a Toyota HiAce, a light truck with a 2,400 cc indirect injection Diesel engine called the 2L. It is currently at 450,000 Km. As soon as 150,000 Km cold starting produced rough idling and the emission of pungent blue smoke which subsides soon after the engine fast idles by holding the gas pedal at 1/3 throttle and it warms up. Therefore, an intake valve is probably leaking. The procedure for cold start per the owners manual calls for holding the gas pedal at 1/2 throttle - preheat - start the engine and then to gradually release the gas pedal, usually yields no issues. However, if by any chance you start the engine without holding a fast idle, the pungent smoke and a cylinder missing occurs. Is this the swan song for this engine? I have been using the most modern motor oil available, API CK-4 SAE 15W/40 in tropical conditions year around and change the oil (6 liters) and the filter every 3,000 Kilometers thus, there is no oil consumption whatsoever. I haven’t done the crankcase blow by test yet. Any comments will be highly appreciated and cheers from Costa Rica!

I like your videos. thanks for share great information. My question for you is the next:. I have a f250 6.9 lt. I noticed some blue smoke when accelerate. the DCR valve is not good . I removed this one and blue smoke stop by I observed the. flow by. do you recommend to replace or just cancel it with a hose to the chassis area?

@jdfflats1 2 жыл бұрын
Check your engine thermostat and or running temperature, Sounds like its running cold although blue smoke is oil burning and this confuses a lot of techs. As well are you running the truck long and hard if you are not getting a good heat soak on the engine meaning if you just do short trips you can expect that

When the compression is leaking enough past the rings that the engine won't start cold, it's time for a rebuild!

Mine starts fast not much cranking in cold weather and without plugging in -20 below but it smokes when i start it and then it clears maybe its the valves need to sealing? Compression feels good

Can you make something on Stop Leak on a CAT?? People say it works and might give me at least another month or two before I should do an inframe!

I'm contemplating a repower of a 1990 45 foot flybridge Post.. Right now it has the detroit 6V-71 'fuel pincher' (yeah right! compared to what!?) turbo diesels. And I want to get my economy up. Right now a duo of Cummins 5.9 12 valves are looking a pretty serious contender. What are the 24 valve 5.9's like? I like that they are pre DEF and pre DPF, but turn a really nice output in marine trim.. are they worth the extra complexity though?? They will be cooled by heat exchangers btw, I'm not having any raw salt water going thru my expensive engine blocks and manifolds! I'm wondering who to trust to obtain the engines for the repower? I know that the engines have to have different, marine bowl pistons fitted and run more boost than in truck / bus trim. I just want to know what the longevity of the 5.9 QSB engines are? Cheers

Great video. I have a question should you have the overhead ran every year
@jdfflats1
@jdfflats1 2 жыл бұрын
No is my answer but manufacture warranty and maintenance manual determine when. Big trucks need to run and log 10.000 miles a month to make money so if your doing that it may be good to have tech run the overhead
