He was a local guy growing up, but I never got to meet him. I did see him in a *tiny* club outside of Seattle back in 1999 or 2000, couldn't have been more than 60 people there. We traded horns a couple times, one of the best shows I've ever been to. He was absolutely on point.

@@Nothing-zw3yd This is the concert my buddy and I attended. We stayed at a hotel across the street from the venue so we could party a little. When we got back to the hotel Dio's band was sitting in the bar waiting on their bus. They were the only ones in there so we went in and were able to chat with all the band members, got autographs, and everything. I had the same experience. I sneaked around the back of a venue after one of his shows in the mid 90's. Security caught me but just as I was about to be escorted off of the premises, his tour manager came out the back door and told the security guards to leave me be. He told me that Ronnie and the rest of the band were cooling down with some beers on the tour bus and he would come out and meet me in 20 minutes. About 45 minutes later, i'm standing next to the tour bus and now there is a line of fans about a mile long behind me waiting to meet him. When he came out he was so nice. He signed my banner. He literally had more questions for me than I had for him. He wanted to know my name, where I was from what I did for a living and more. That was a great experience in my life.

One of Ronnie's underappreciated singing qualities is his unparalleled enunciation/clarity in his singing... he is one of the VERY few singers that you can clearly understand every word in every song - to the point where you don't need an album sleeve or lookup the lyrics online to learn the words.

I don;t know about anyone else but it was kinda almost in my head a war between them personally. What i would say it that Jake was a more futuristic, layered, with a really sick mix of styles and nuance. I always hated FX, but Ultimate Sin is one of the best uses of them of that era.

These two songs are off the first record Black Sabbath did with Dio, after Black Sabbath fired Ozzy Osbourne in 1979. The album is also titled Heaven and Hell (1980) and the title track is awesome! While shredding was becoming the thing in hard rock and rock music, Campbell (who could shred when he wanted to), kept to more melodic guitar work. One of the most, if not the most iconic voices regardless of genre. The man was born to sing. What is amazing, at least to me, is that he never took vocal lessons. And you're a fellow Aussie! Definitely going to be following the channel in future, glad you're enjoying Dio. The only classic metal vocalist I can think of to match him (and who seems surprisingly overlooked for this kind of breakdown) is Eric Adams of Manowar. Please please please react to Dio's vocals in the 1974 "Love Is All" video. Its a very early look into Dio's earlier vocal style and is also impressive, and there is a faily recent live version of him singing it with The London Symphony Orchestra. Doing them both back to back would be awesome =)

Can we have the Killswitch Engage version analysis? It's so fun and Howard's a monster vocalist.

I've not only been listening to RJD since i was 11 yo, but i even named one of my cars "Ronnie James." He is not just a legend, he was a story teller, an innovator, an inspiration and truly one of the most genuine and nicest guys ever. I remember when he put together Hear N Aid, the singers that worked with him on Stars were not only in awe of him, so many of them took away vocal tips and tricks that he shared. And these were very well established, famous singers in their own rights. He is a legend among legends and it makes me so incredibly happy to see his legacy continue to be enjoyed and appreciated 🤘😝🤘

one of the best vocalists to ever walk this planet ! Ronnie James Dio was so good his live performances even in his last year before he died he blew everybody away at graspop that year with how good n clear his voice was + his insanely high pitch vocals he pulled out to enter the stage were incredible.

Ronnie wasn't only a master of his craft. When you can't find *anyone* to say a bad word about him, but have an endless amount of accounts of fans who he was very friendly and respectful to and even made an effort to remember their names, you have a winner at being a good human being on your hands. Level: expert. Granted, what he wasn't particularly good at was music videos, but nobody's perfect, not even Ronnie. ^^

@@fronthorse Fair point. Okay, ALMOST anyone. ^^ (Although I think Vivian had a bigger problem with Wendy than with Ronnie. Without her, things might've gone down differently.)

You really should check out Dio singing live, it really was his element, especially the live videos from when he was in his prime in the 70´s and 80´s. Some great examples: Rainbow - live in Munich 1977, everything is great in that video but the songs Catch the rainbow and Mistreated are great examples. Black Sabbath - Heaven and hell - Live 1980, Dio - Don't Talk To Strangers -Live At The Spectrum 1986.

12:14He sings the vowel "i" here in chest voice, the vowel is completely open and so it can't be in the nasal cavity, his tongue still seems low to me too but I loved this excellent analysis even more.

There is no arguing about how good a singer he was, is and will be, but he is also a great storyteller. Every song is a micro-story and he is the dungeon master. There is only one other person capable of such magic (that i can remember) and that is Bruce Dickinson. 🤘🤘🎄🍺

Now that you've seen the original you have to check out a couple of the amazing covers of this song, the one by Killswitch Engage, and the one by Liliac, a band made entirely of siblings with a very unique sounding singer.

Nothing can beat the original, but the cover by Killswitch Engage is by far the best cover of all time. A great homage to Dio and this music video.

There is a video of Julia and the Charismatic voice watching Dio. I think you'll love it!!! Check it out!!! I think they did Stargazer. He is one of my favorites. I was about 12 or 13 at this time. This and The Last In Line really brought me into the whole gig. Julia...You are gold in this reaction while breaking it down. Great reaction! Respect and love!!! 🤟🍻

I'm making myself a playlist of just Dio songs and have over 200 in it but I keep finding more from him and they're all bangers. I just recently discovered his songs from "Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast" from 1974 and "Seeds of Change" from 1980 and They're really great especially "Love is All" and "Mask of the Great Deceiver". I got 226 songs and haven't even gotten to the live albums yet.
