I did not even ask for a lot. I only gave them a picture with a birthday cake I found on pinterest. They managed to get the appearance but it still tasted awful even tho I only said the ingredients should be vegan. Since then I make my birthday cakes myself I rather them looking shitty than taste shitty and I have found pretty good recipes at that.

@R.P.-hw2rq I think the point was that they were OK with the baby's breath though, despite being warned that it's toxic. You're right, many people are sensitive or allergic to artificial food dyes, but that doesn't make natural poisons less poisonous just because they're natural.

Please look it up at another source. Baby's breath is fatal, especially for smaller children. The symptoms you listed are for a mild poisoning. The more severe are heart problems and respiratory paralysis. The intake of 2 leaves (people mistake baby's breath with wild garlic) will kill an adult within 2 days.

Some species are even used for food, especially desserts, even wedding cakes. I also read that it's not inherently toxic, it's mixed it up with other species. Serious issues like those are rare and I suppose only if you it a ton of it.

Still risky especially for children or those with weak immune systems. If you're the vendor you better have the customer sign a waiver even if your business is still liable for any expensive hospitalization your cake may cause.

When she said "no food coloring" my brain went straight to "Ok shall I feed the geese some red cabbage and use the resulting turquoise blue turds to frost it for you?" Because one day as a teenager I fed the geese a bunch of red cabbage we got given, and the yard had turquoise blue plops all over it for a week!

I actually went for "subtle natural wedding makeup" and she flat out told me the service would cost almost double the price if she had known I was the bride not an atendee. I absolutely believe in things often being overpriced just due to the wedding tag.

It is a thing - people who are hired for a wedding tend to expect to be put under more stress in the event of a "bridezilla" so they price higher, and the higher price tends to make the wedding party expect better quality, which can put more stress on the people hired, etc. And of course plenty of brides aren't like that but the reputation has unfortunately stuck.

Some contractors don't care, they'll provide the same service and charge the same no matter what. Others will give a higher quote since they expect even more things than usual to be demanded. And some people just charge more because it's a higher value thing being asked of them, so they want some of that value themselves.

The flower IS Not that Dangerous, IT technically IS Not even poisenous. IT can however cause allergic reactions so Same differences for WHO ever gets Hit by that, but Overall IT IS way less reliable

Butterfly pea flower (as used for tea) could theoretically give a 'pale blue' without food coloring.....but getting hands on some to use is likely impossible for 99% of bakers in time for a wedding...I mean birthday. Substitute onion flowers for the baby's breath...arrangement could make it look very similar and at least its actually edible, but they'd likely never ask for anything like that again when they get onion-flavored cake. Of course, if they're ok with 'bacteria fart' cake, they might not mind.

Spirulina is also used for light blue! It's made from algae and I've seen ice cream coloured with it, so it should be perfectly fine for a cake

I once attended a backyard garden style wedding. Beautiful gardens. Except the cake was right underneath this big trellis or whatever its called of angels trumpet. Angels trumpet isnt something you want to ingest. I called non-emergency so they could be on standby and notified since it needs a specific antidote and symptoms can manifest to look like other more common things. Needless to say I did not partake in the hallucinogenic potentially lethal plant but others inadvertently ingested some despite warnings. Everyone survived and it made for a good story much later. But youd be suprised at how many common household plants and garden plants can be lethal in the right circumstances. Poisons are my thing, I've got my own poison garden inspired by the famous one. But i also study them as one of my jobs.

@@imechko_familia I assume she's referring to spirulina, which is an edible intensely blue pigment called Phycocyanin extracted from blue-green algae also known as cyanobacteria. I think it sometimes has a cheesy or fishy taste/smell because it comes from a type of bacteria abundant in the ocean

When I wanted poisonous flowers on a cake, I looked them up first and found out they were toxic. So I grabbed some modelling marzipan and food dye to make mini ones instead. It's the sane thing to do.

I'd have informed them that putting poisonous substances on the cake would increase the price to about 8 figures for each person who is expected to take a bite from it. Putting high pricetags on stupid ideas is usually a good way to either get people to rethink what they're doing, or to find out they have exponentionally more money than braincells.

I did always wonder if the labor was right on the wedding cake vs. regular cake thing. Just got engaged recently and we're not doing anything huge, but if we do buy a cake that's something we'll keep in mind. Nothing more romantic than treating the workers making your day special with the respect and compensation they deserve! Always pay your artists 😊

uh most wedding cakes are MUCH bigger than a birthday cake. Most wedding cakes are tiered cakes and elaborately decorated. That's why they have supports inside to hold up the cake. Most birthday cakes tend to be one cake with 2-4 layers, and while they can be elaborate, they are usually not on the level of a wedding cake..@@YurinanAcquiline

Look for a bakery that breaks down for you what you're paying per serving. Keep in mind that if you want fondant it's going to cost a lot more than if you wanted buttercream, and that your final cost will depend on the flavor of the cake you choose and the decor.

My friend just got married and she told the makeup artist she’s goung to a friend’s wedding, it would’ve cost her 3 times as much if she told the makeup artist that it’s her wedding, that doesn’t make any sense for the same work and products. Same for cake, if it’s the same size why is there a massive price difference.

Part of the price difference is for pain and suffering. If a birthday cake isn't absolutely perfect then it isn't that big a big deal. If a wedding cake isn't perfect then people go nuts.

Baby's breath (Gypsophila elegans) contains saponins that when ingested by animals may cause minor gastrointestinal upset. In the case of humans, the sap from baby's breath can cause contact dermatitis, (for those that are like myself, not entirely familiar with that term: its irritating to the skin and can result in itching and/or a rash.) So yeaaaa definitely do not put it on any celebratory cakes of any kind, and generally keep it away from food 😅

omg thank you 100% relatable, I work in the bakery and i dislike customers trying to keep it cheap for a tier cake. Which is why we always offer full sheet to feed the guests and a small cake for the bride and groom to slice. The biggest loophole at my shop is the customer will intentionally purchase 2 standard double layers(cheaper than the size we wouldve stacked it) so they can bring it home to stack it themselves. I had cases where they purposely asked me "how" the procdure to put it together works. I always smile and tell them they can find clips on how to build their cake online. if youre not paying me then i sure am not telling you how lol also the real flower on the cake thing...yeah always important to give awareness for food safety when comes to real flowers on the cake. My excuse is always cross contamination is why we avoiding adding real flowers on the cake(I dont make the rules every manager who runs a bakery will have unofficial policy)

See I’m not gonna get a cake that you can’t eat every part of. (With the exception of the supports. There’s no way to get around that. lol) but if I want flowers, ribbons, or whatever, I will pick a bakery and either pay to have edible ones made or ask the baker for alternative suggestions. Poisoning people is a no.

With all due respect, I feel that vendors are aware that weddings are seen as a "once in a lifetime" event, and thus upcharge wedding cakes accordingly. Certainly some of the cost goes into delivery, complexity, consults and tastings etc. though. My partner and I found this to be the case for our extremely simple cake for our casual at home wedding celebration (we just wanted a single layer cake, orange frosting, two words in black for the theme we did, that's it, we added a couple decorations ourselves at the end.) However if you want all the fixings, the fancy stuff, the delivery, I suspect the cost is more fair.

I'm like fighting the urge to tell a bakery that it's for a graduation/birthday because it'll be a backyard micro wedding and we'll have a very small budget for cake. Why take an 80$ cake (idk cake prices) and bump it up to 100$ for a wedding? My idea is that its a single tier strawberry cake with lemon frosting and some cornflowers (edible) sprinkled on it. Is that really too complicated? Idk I might bake it myself because I don't want to be rude to a bakery and lie but I also don't want to be swindled out of my money.

One flower I would want to use on cake is lilacs, they both look and smell really nice, are actually edible and I think the taste could actuallly combine well with cake. It kinda tastes the way perfume smells

That might work in the icing, but any acidic ingredients in the batter would turn it pink.

Blue is notoriously difficult because it fades to purple/pink under the sun or fluorescent lights. Butterfly pea would do the same and is super expensive compared to food safe food coloring.

One time i had to pull something that looked a bit like babies breath from a kids mouth, i live in the american heartland so some of you may have already realized what this actually was... poison hemlock. The mom told me she thought it was fine because it was babies breath... like no even that wouldnt be fine. Im an EMT and i explained that as i did so just to clarify and of course like any logical person she thanked me profusely because she knew enough about plants to realuze that when i pointed out the purple splotches she went white lol lucky the kid hadnt manged to ingest any toxin as it had literally not made contact with the inside of his mouth yet but just touching it to his lips could have killed him.

There are definitely places that double the price when they find out its a wedding cake. But it does make sense a wedding cake is going to cost more. You'd need to clear much more of your day for a wedding cake than a birthday cake. Its a once in a lifetime event, highly coordinated and complicated, and 10-20 minutes late would be a significant problem not a minor annoyance. It makes sense that, even if the cake and ingredients are identical, it costs the bakery more working hours to do a wedding cake.

I went to a restaurant a couple of years ago that put hydrangeas on their rice and seafood tower. I picked them all off and let the server know people shouldn’t be eating them, and he was like, “But I was told all the flowers in our garden are edible.” 😬 Like, I’m sure it won’t kill you. But this is an expensive meal, I would like for it not to make me sick? I couldn’t finish it, anyway… it wasn’t very good, even without the hydrangeas.
