Michi and Abuela are just at different ends of the bilingual spectrum: Michi is English-dominant and Abuela is Spanish-dominant, but both have a passive understanding of the ‘other’ language. One of the things that I love about the ‘Abuela universe‘ is that all of the different characters are in different places in the bilingual spectrum. That takes a lot of time and effort in terms of ‘character development’. Bravo to the writers. 👏👏👏

For anyone wondering, that's because it's always much easier for the language learner to understand a language receptively than to create it yourself. Instead of having to assemble a sentence from all the different words you may have learned or encountered, you're only having to interpret the limited number that are in what you're listening to or reading. My mom could read the passages from the intermediate-Spanish textbook I used in teaching college Spanish, far better than my actual students, but it takes great effort for her to utter the simplest sentences.

This was literally my last conversation with my dad: Millennial Me- “So how are are your plants?” 60-something Latino dad- “Ay mis plantitas de ajis son bueno pero no como las plantas de la casa de mami, ella tenia una mata de mango, y toronja, y el major mata de limón del mundo- todavia tengo los semillas!..” Mellenial Me- “Wow thats really cool I didn’t know you had seeds from Abuela’s lemon tree in Puerto Rico, you could like, sprout them into an heirloom tree” I am deadass right now I could not make this up. Also, my Tio Paco also used the exact same “two wings of the same bird” line anytime anyone said anything about Cuba/Puerto Rico. In the exact same philosophical tone of voice. I literally laughed so hard at this. Thanks Jenny y Primo Kevin from West Palm Beach!!!!!!! 💙❤️🇵🇷🇨🇺

My dad used to tell me that when he was growing up, in a household of Ashkenazic emigrés from Russia-occupied countries (🇺🇦 🇵🇱 🇧🇾), anytime the old folks wanted to gossip, they would switch languages. He learned bits and pieces of about nine different languages, because right about the time he'd grasp enough of Yiddish or Spanish or German to follow the thread, the old folks would notice him listening closely and switch languages again. 😝

Although I _do_ find the idea of an old Spanish-speaking Cuban lady and her young English-speaking American granddaughter going looking for a way to communicate with each other and finally settling on _FRENCH_ to be extremely amusing. Also, why am I not surprised that _Tetris_ seems to speak to Flor's jangled brain in the best way?

Reminds me of the extended family get togethers we used to have. The aunties would prompt the cousins to speak Mandarin to one another "for practice" though we never made it past introductory Q&A's 🤣🤣 It was really a segment for the aunties to see and listen. But once we reached the end of the Q & A session, we would revert back to speaking in English with genuine conversations formed organically 🤭🤭
