Fun fact: JD Sumner, the vocalist, was almost always drunk when he sang. It helped him relax his vocal cords. His group, The Stamps, sang mostly Southern Gospel, but also sang backup for Elvis for a time. On more than one occasion, shows were cancelled cause JD was too drunk to be on stage.

Im a young basso profundo, can hit a chest voice A1 very well, at 24yo (I expect to get a few more notes as the years come). BUT I can confirm that drinking and smoking (not a lot of smok, just to warm up the folds :P) can reaaally ease up those bottom notes + give that extra deep fat tone that would otherwise sound airy and meh. Theoretically he is hiiting a chest E1 and I can guarantee he cant do that without some chemical cheats. I can reach a good full sound sexy chest G1, Gb1 when really "warmed", but sober even an A1 can be a hard stretch. Being drunk out of shape is lame, but it really is weird how some "avoid" behaviors for hitting top notes can actually help hitting the bottom ones. (disclaimer: dont do this to get a deeper voice, doesnt work like that. I dont want anyone starting drugs for a deep voice. It just allows an easier reach for the bottom notes, for a short time, about the same as the "morning voice")

i think whats so insane about this is how it just fits in his range and he doesnt have to adjust his timbre much at all. Take the A1 at 0:20. most low bass singers today would have to heavily adjust timbre to get any volume or seek other techniques to hit it (subharmonics, growl, vocal fry). meanwhile sumner just, hits it, and makes it seem so effortless. He was one of Elvis Presley's close friends and he and his band 'The Stamps' wer Elvis' backup singers and used to open his shows for him. JD held the record for lowest bass for years. Fun fact about him was that he was one of Elvis' best friends and played a large part in planning his funeral arrangements. Southern Gospel has always had the best basses because it's music that written in a way that they can shine. JD was terrific. George Younce was incredibly enjoyable. Richard Sterban (also toured with JD and Elvis but better known for the Oak Ridge Boys) is one of the best living. Tim Duncan of Canton Junction and Tim Riley (formally) of Gold City are also tops. Do yourself a favor and look them up. These modern "acappela" groups that everyone likes to talk about have nothing on Gospel quartets.
