I remember as a kid a friend sold some Cadillac parts to a guy in Brooklyn . They had a " shop " in a run down residential garage in a very bad area . They would buy wrecked " flashy " vehicles and sell them in the " hood " . I saw them " straighten " a bent chassis with a blow torch and a sledgehammer . ALL specifications were meticulously adjusted to factory parameters - BY EYE ! As long as the car didn't go down the street sideways with the tires squealing , it was " perfect " ! Bet they got at least 6 months on a set of new tires !

you can put in cam bolts or smaller grade 8 bolts to get that camber to go more positive or even grind the struts etc...we have done alignments for 40 yrs and make these adjustments all the time....Specialty Products sells kits for adjusting camber but i don't want to go against the grain for other shops...like i said, it has worked for us for over 40 yrs and saved thousands of tires over the yrs....it really is the manufacturers causing all these issues because they think that their alignments will stay true for the life of the car and thus giving us "non-adjustable" angles....well, in our business, you gotta do what you gotta do to make things work and produce great results...thanks Ray

I wouldn't do a repair that the manufacturer says isn't possible without talking to my insurance agent... Scenario: You fix car, everything's great. Customer loses it and wraps car around the front end of a school bus. Car owner tells attorney he had work done at your shop and for some reason, even though he was traveling at "safe speed", and had "plenty of room to maneuver", he couldn't prevent the impact with the bus. Attorney looks into the repair, hires expert witness to say that the manufacturer recommends against the repair you did, and voila, your insurance company is on the hook. Then your insurance company turns to page 1273 of your policy, Section 392, paragraph C, subsection 64, where it PLAINLY STATES, "liability coverage for repairs and workmanship not in accordance with manufacturer recommendations is hereby excluded." Leaving your shop on the hook for all damages, injuries, and attorney and court costs. No thanks. Load the parts cannon.

Hey Ray, I learn more from you than any other automotive repair channel I've watched. Your one handed camera work is always showing exactly what you're doing, and your running commentary is explaining exactly what and why. You always include your little tricks and short cuts that you've learned the hard way throughout your career, as well as your throught process when diagnosing a problem. I've probably learned more in 2 months watching your videos than 45 years as a DIYer the hard way. I hope KZfaq reimbureses you well for all the time you must put into your videos. Keep up the Good Work .

It’s steering axis inclination. It causes both front tires to gain positive camber when turning and along with caster it helps to self center the front wheels. You guys need to make your boss get an open face alignment rack. That cross bar would drive me nuts doing alignments 😂

As a retired collision repair teck we redid work from other shops at the request of the insurance companies that didn't like the previous repairs. The insurance companies would tell the original shop, if they didn't refund the entire amount on the original repairs and the extra costs to undo those repairs. And then we the second shop that we did everything would charge even more because we had to undo the previous repairs such as welding new parts etc

I would disagree with the things are far too expensive. Many companies are making big bucks selling non essential items. Apple is selling a ton of expensive phones, services, etc. to a ton of "broke" people. There is a ton of money in the economy. It is where people choose to spend the money.
@tyree9055

@@lechatbotte. You have to be able to afford it, which is why being poor is so expensive. It costs more money being poor (due to late fees, higher costs because of the inability to make bulk purchases, higher heating / cooling costs because cheap housing's insulation is complete garbage, etc.) than it does another who can afford to do it at the time it needs to be done.

SAI is steering axis inclination angle, not steering axis included angle. Included angle is SAI + Camber. That said, I wouldn't have been so fast to condemn the spindle as bent, for a couple of reasons. Going by the measurements on the screen, we're not talking about a huge problem. Also, even though included angle may suggest a bent part, you don't know what that part is until you actually measure it, and then compare it to a like, undamaged part. Its just as likely the strut or control arm is bent, and given the spindle is the strongest of the 3, you need to check the others, as well. Also, have another look at caster. Caster and SAI are the same line, yet caster is perfect. Lets say the front end took some kind of hit. For it to only effect SAI and not caster, would mean the hit had to be perfectly perpendicular. Any deviation from that would have also effected caster. Alignment angles don't exist separately from each other. When you change 1 angle, you almost always change something else. I would have set the toe for 2 reasons. First, it was out and regardless if the car needed other work, adjusting the toe would improve tire wear for the customer, who may opt to never have the SAI issue fixed. Second, since everything is connected, setting the toe and taking another caster sweep would have been a legitimate diagnostic step. Setting the toe would have some impact on the other measurements. It could have made the problem better, or even brought everything into spec.

He could have also put a eccentric bolt in the strut as well. That would have atleast fixed the camber issue. I dont worry about SAI if the vehicle drives fine. I think fixing camber would have fixed SAI.
@gregrobsn
@gregrobsn 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, and I believe the odds are the stamped steel control arm is much more likely to be warped or bent than the cast hub. It doesn't take much of a hit to bend the steel stamping.
@timhurst1813
@timhurst1813 2 жыл бұрын
But I also see the fact of replacing the bent part is the proper way to go about it. Sometimes it's just really difficult to find exactly which one without guessing. If he would have just put a cam bolt in and fixed the camber issue, youtube "experts" probably would have ripped into him about doing a hack job even though it's a legitimate fix.

you can adjust that camber in the front. we do it at my shop all the time. for more positive camber you need to raise the front wheels and loosen the strut bolts. for more negative camber you leave the wheels on the ground and loosen the strut bolts. mind you things can still be bent and you dont always get enough adjustment but it is a trick that works well.

That was fun to watch. I haven't been able to use an alignment machine for quite some time since I became a mobile mechanic. Just a little tip though. You can turn on the included angles (IA) through the functions selection F1 f2 f3 F4 and with the steering axis inclination (SAI) and the Camber reading You can find out exactly what's bent. I enjoy watching your videos. It reminds me of when I used to work in a shop. I used to hate setting lifts and doing alignments but after watching your channel it just brings back a lot of the old feelings of working in a shop and now I would give anything to have a lift or fancy schmancy alignment machine lol.

I'm at 7:00, and that is not bent. I started my apprenticeship at a suspension shop where we used to wheel align cars for about 4 smash repair shops or, as you guys in the US call them, "body shops". The SAI went negative, so it would need to have stretched the LCA, which is highly unlikely; I have seen it where the lower bolt hole is elongated on the cross member. A 1 degree split on the SAI is not uncommon, so I say the SAI is fine. You could just use the cross jack and lift the front, then loosen the right-hand clevis bolts on the strut, and it would come in green. I never wheel align off computer parameters as the computer doesn't know much. Where I live in Canberra, Australia, we have many roundabouts, so a city car here will have a completely different alignment setup to a car that drives country roads out west in the tablelands.

It's cool to see how the machine has changed since the last time I used one, the late 90's was the last time i did an alignment but it's also reassuring to see for as much as things change, they still stay the same in other ways.

Great channel. SAI is Steering Axis Inclination. That camber isn't that far off. You could probably loosen the cradle and cheat it a little towards the driver's side. You'll add camber to the driver's side and loose it from the passenger side. Not sure how much this will effect the SAI #, but the car should loose the pull.
