In this video I bring you along on a "normal" day at the shop to see what a little bit of what happens and what i do on a day to day basis. Of course this is only about 70% of it because obviously I can't record customer interactions, estimates, billing, phone calls, potty breaks, etc... I did this just to show viewers what mechanics go through on a day to day basis so they might understand a little bit about shop life. If you work in a shop... well this is nothing new to you I am sure :)

I think my favorite video is the one with the Buick Lesabre whose owner tried to install a new ECM with connectors that didn't fit with the existing ones but tried jamming them in anyway. Eric's reaction when he realized that all of the pins were bent and stuck was priceless! Sometimes car problems can be caused by the stupidest things!

I have been watching and following you for a couple of years now and I must say your knowledge especially on the electrical side is nothing short of impressive. I always find your videos very informative, entertaining and easy to follow. Your thought process on diagnostics is rare these days. I am a heavy duty mechanic up here in Calgary Alberta, the shop brings in a lot of light duty trucks and passenger cars. I find myself telling myself in my head “ man I remember seeing Eric made a video on this “ you have definitely improved my diag skills.

I agree with all the comments here. Every time you think the grass is greener you forget about all the trade offs. And I also feel relaxed watching people fix things and pretty much dread it when I have to fix my own cars (although I do). And he mentioned this being like a reality show and it really is and one I think a lot of people would watch. Maybe this'll be the next new thing on the Discovery channel..

Responding to your old comment. Every body has their own passions, likes & dislikes. I've been a mechanic for 17 yrs and still love what I do. I tried doing some administrative work early on in my career and a handful of other non "hands on jobs" and I hated every one of them. I hated pushing pencils and staring at a computer all day. Nice to hear you appreciate your job as I do mine. Very rare these days to find folks who enjoy what they do. I'll stick to wrenching as it is a passion of mine. Everyday is a different challenge (I love challenges 😃), pays me well enough to have 3 nice vehicles, live in a nice suburban subdivision with a 1 acre lot and feed my 3 kids without my wife ever having to work so she can raise them. Cheers from Brandon Mississippi!

When I worked as a automobile mechanic back in the 1980s, the crew of mechanics I worked with would cherry pick the work orders, leaving the Mopars in the stack and working on anything else, until all that were left were Mopars. Apparently Mopars haven't changed much.

I know this is an old comment but I learned everything i need to know about chrysler products years ago. I had a coworker whose relative worked at the pickup assembly plant. He was visiting and asked him if he wanted to get lunch. His relative said sure meet me at such and such bar which was across the street from the assembly plant. He got there a little early and saw a bar that stretched off into the distance. The bar was empty except for the bartenders who were busy lining up mugs of beer with a shot of whisky next to each one all the way down the bar. The whistle went off across the street and the doors opened and a herd of workers each went to their place on the bar like milk cows into stalls. They sat there for the next 30 minutes and drank as much as they could then proceeded back across the street to "build" more trucks. Yeah...all I needed to know. Getting a caliper backwards was probably the least of the issues.

This is a great snapshot of his day. I am retired after many years as a mechanic. I remember the many times I was sent the wrong parts and other times the right parts but they were defective, out of the box. I started collecting catalogues and ended up with almost a full set so I could order the right parts. Then there are never enough tools and now all the electronic diagnostic very expensive devices. Incompetent parts men cost me dearly. I commend this good man. The job is hard and now with electronics everywhere, it is getting harder. Maybe he can make lots of money creating videos, like Scotty. I read he has made 7 million since he started and he rarely turns a bolt now. When I watch South Main videos I click the like button every time to help him.

Back in the 1980's when I was about your age, Eric, I worked my day job as a computer systems analyst at EDS, but because the job was so un-fulfilling and gummed up with lousy managers that I found myself searching for a way to do something I liked, and I found a part time job working as a mechanic in the evenings and on Saturdays. For three years I worked for a guy like you, Eric. The guy had a solid reputation as a good mechanic and always had a lot of work waiting and had many repeat customers who would take up his time talking and BSing. He made good money, and he was smart like you. And I had the best job I ever had, or would ever have, in my entire working career.

Ahead of your award winning personality, the thing I love about you is that you refuse to load up & fire the parts cannon off. It is very entertaining to watch you double and triple check by process of technical testing what is exactly wrong with a vehicle. One of the tests I had before being hired as an assistant automotive instructor at my high school was to to diagnose a 1965 ford starter. I tested both pull in and hold in windings and found the pull in windings were weak. My prospective boss / teacher said to replace the starter. I said give me 10 minutes & I will make this one start the truck. I drilled out a flat washer and stuffed it behind the bendix and it started the truck right up. No charge to the customer / math teacher.

Eric, I'm newly subbed to your channel, and loving each video I see. This one brought to mind the mechanic shop we'd been going to for years. One afternoon after work, I had to limp my '83 Dodge Dakota home with what we found out later to be a split radiator. One of my "limp stops" on the way home was our mechanic's parking lot, just about closing time. The guy had no problem with me stopping there to cool off, for the last leg of the journey home. He actually helped me try to get more water into the engine, well after closing time. It's people like you and them that make a bad day with a sick car a much better one, merely by attitude and caring. Thank you for this video! Well done!

Fantastic! But Eric, how do you find the time to run a super busy shop, raise a family, make videos, AND answer all the comments?!? I worked at a small independent shop for a year in 2012 after getting sick of grad school. My boss (and mentor) didn't pay his techs much more than minimum wage...and I get where he's coming from, especially with outrageous taxes and such. But no one can make a living earning 10 bucks an hour! So basically I had no choice but to start my own gig and build a customer base from scratch. You are 100% correct about treating your customers right and giving them a break on the small stuff...at the end of the day knowing that they have complete trust in you is one of the most rewarding feelings! Rock on!

I got stuck in the old service truck the other day, and a few weeks ago one of the tire guys backed into something with the door open and damaged the latch on the door. I was on a service call for a downed truck in the landfill. I got out there, got it fixed and was heading back to the shop. Well that landfill has some treacherous roads. I hit a huge rut, the door sprung open and both hinges broke and the door was hanging by the wiring harness. I cut the wiring and drove it the half mile back to the shop lol.

Working my way through you videos. This was an oldie but a goodie. Loved the hide the nuts and bolts story. I had a neighbor kid come over to talk while I was fixing my wheelbarrow. Had to go get a tool and as I was putting things back together the wheel was missing. Checked all the places it might be with no luck. Finally asked neighbor and he looked around his place. Finally came over carrying a wheel and red faced. We had a good laugh over that one.

I can't explain why this video was so entertaining, but it was !!!!! I guess it has to do with the honesty of Eric and how that honesty comes through somehow. Thanks for making my day off enjoyable !

I really enjoyed this video. You are a lucky guy to be able to share your work life with your family. Plus, doing the occasional :"free" quick repair is the best way I know of to build a loyal customer base. Keep up the good work!

i've been in the bussiness 25 years and you sir are one of the top i've seen, you take a pride even in mundane tasks.... Kudo's, that's a real indication of you wanting to do the best work. i've seen most techs i've worked/managed/hired rush through those "boring", " simple" tasks to get onto the "money makers"....thats in itself shows the level of pride, do every job well with pride no matter how big or small. As for the no pay check part....you said it. success is really on how much money you DON'T owe, if you owe nothing your a pretty dam successful man. and for the Subaru Guy.....FAST,GOOD,CHEAP you can only ever get two.

New subscriber here. Love the videos man. How cool it is to have a family business with your wife working with you and your children close by and doing something you obvious love doing. I am a retired guy living in Florida for the last 42 years but born and raised in NW Pennsylvania and remember how rough the winters are on automobiles. Your videos are top notch and very enjoyable to watch and learn from.

Mechanic philosopher, I would like to hear more about your thoughts while you are working, I know when I am working with my hands my head thinks! It was a great video good to see your kids can see what their Dad does through the day. You provide a microcosm of the complexity of all life. Your problem solving skills are creative and novel and very valuable. I understand what you mean about repeat business but you are also under rating the years of learning that has gone into developing your diagnostic skills and creative elegant testing responses whilst juggling a business with grace and humility. Your sons have a lot to be grateful for to live around a man with intelligence, fallibility and humour. I have not watched TV since I discovered your channel!

Don’t worry bro keep doing what you do. My dad is an old school diesel mechanic and he’s says your good and for him to say that you gotta be good . He says you were taught by some older mechanics . Loves your videos because you trouble shoot first. He says these new mechanics are part changers. Lol He said the day the computer came out was the day mechanics were all done . Keep on wrenching.

Eric, you have awesome work ethics and its your shop- your rules. Whiners can get their own shop. Ringing telephone, door bell going off and other interruptions are a sign of a great business. Never apologies for the everyday workings of your shop. I learn everyday watching your videos and greatly appreciate your time, effort and desire to teach us viewers. I have been a small business owner for 25+ years and I know a great business when I see it. You are blessed.
