Hi, I'm a second year PhD student in nanomedicine. The tech shown in this video is clever and exciting, but functionally not dissimilar to formulations I've used preclinically before, and will face all the same issues current actively targeted nanoparticles do. Most importantly, there is not much difference at all between cancer cells and our cells, only slight differences such as overexpression of certain receptors and different metabolism rates. The purpose of a technology like the one shown is to increase the therapeutic window of an anti-tumoural agent, but it will still have a limited window. This vector will have off target effects - there is simply no way they are only targeting cancer cells. There is no treatment which only targets cancer cells. These innovations take decades to reach clinic. As we improve our biological understanding of tumours, we will see the viability of this technology improve. Personally, I think this technology has a great use case in anti-bacterial treatment, as viral vectors can exclusively target bacteria. I'll do some reading about this - super interesting and ty for the video.

I was planing on writing my thesis on this idea which at the time I independantly thought of. It's exciting to see that what I've thought of before alone is also being thought of by real professional scientists around the world. It really gives me confidence in my thinking capabilities. I even once thought of a theoratical cancer vaccine which I later saw that 2 scientists got the Nobel for thinking about it. I really hope I get to do something in the future. I'm currently an undergrad in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering. And hope to study my mastar's in Synthetic Biology or Bioengineering abroad. Preferably, a Deucht or Scandanavian country. With scholarship of course.

I would like to advocate for extreme caution for creating such things. Viruses mutate. If you use the same DNA to make your Nano robot then it is also subject to mutation. Hopefully well thought out and effective safe guards are put in place. Every thing that uses DNA or mRNA to replicate is potentially dangerous due to possible mutations just ask any biologist. I can see the promise of things like that but some of the worst things in history were done with the best intentions.

You know, I might be delighted if I wasn't terrified after being shown for the last 3+ years just what the pharmaceutical industry is capable of. Personally, I doubt that little trust I had before is ever coming back, but hey, that's just me, I don't mean to spoil your optimism. Also, at least for now, it seems to me that it's not so much of a "one size fits all" as it's "no size fits at all". But I suppose that's going to improve with time and more work. Too bad, as I've otherwise been a real technology geek, including the pharmaceutical innovations, but this field at least had become a red zone for me.

The application of nanotechnology in medicine and healthcare is referred to as nanomedicine, and it has been used to combat some of the most common diseases, including cardiovascular diseases and cancer. There is increasing optimism that nanotechnology applied to medicine and dentistry will bring significant advances in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Overall, Switzerland plays a significant role in the global nanotechnology community and is known for its high-quality research and innovation in this field. Nanorobotics is an interdisciplinary field that combines the principles of robotics, nanotechnology and material science to develop robots at the nanoscale. 10:10 [Builtin com; NCBI; Spandidos Publications; Yahoo! A team of researchers at Tel Aviv University in Israel has come up with tiny micro-robots that can scan individual cells to tell whether they're healthy or in trouble. Measuring only ten microns in diameter, this tiny robot utilizes both electric and magnetic fields for navigation. To put this in perspective, a human hair is approximately 70 microns. The human eye cannot see anything under 40 microns. 6:16 [Industry Tap; Phys]

I strongly advise cancer patients to join support groups so they do not have to go through it alone. Sometimes having someone who has been through what you are going through is preferable than having someone who can only fathom what you are going through. Personally, I suggest the Truth About Cancer support group. This group has about 6000 members who all support each other. They investigate alternative cancer therapies, which are really beneficial. This group can be found on the social media site facebook. I really hope that everyone survives and overcomes this dreadful illness!

I disagree; they will be sold at a price just within reach of the average family. Big pharma will create the ailments for which they will sell these treatments.

I am sure they did this by now and I think with me. I had a surgery. I waited six weeks to go on my vacation. I go to the airport, I am scanned and my girl area lit up. The security was trying to take me to a room then she said sorry, you can go now it appears you have a device....no, not that I am aware of... is this it?

Every 10 yrs you hear about these being built, each time advertised differently (just whatever the public will buy). But they never get, or are secretly.

odd that there are so few toutube videos about self replicating nanobots, especially since that's the most revolutionizing technology that could become available near term

I'd like to be excited about these developments, but even the the most paranoid tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist would have a solid point about tiny machines going through our bloodstream being a bad thing in our society. Let's ground ourselves to reality here, yes nano robots could do many great things to actually help people, but people can and will be awful. If an awful person has a significant amount of money and influence coupled with an ulterior motive then has say so over technology like nano robots, then it is definitely going to be altered to be used in a malicious way. So yeah. I'm more worried about developments like this because we don't live in a perfect world where we make things solely to help one another without inflicting harm.

Right now scientists created cures for most viruses but the virus vector is where the problem consists, they just can't figure out how to get the cures to those cells which shows how complicated that specific area is to this field
