Today I'll be trying out three different brick and mortar restaurants that serve pasteles, which is a Puerto Rican dish. This dish was brought over to Hawaii by the Puerto Rican immigrants that came here to work on the plantations. It had evolved and has it's own unique characteristics apart from the original authentic pasteles from Puerto Rico.

I truly miss Maecee's wagon....they use to hang out at Pali and Kapaa Q road, upside where "popolo boi" hangs out now. Foodland Dillingham also sells their pastele in the deli counter. Thanks to my long time good neighbors, the Salcedos....his wife Anna would make original pasteles with the t-leaf wrapping and string tied (not like aluminum foil). After eating that........I was hooked!

I love pasteles and gunduri rice! I requested it for my bday dinner a few years in a row from my mom…she just made the rice and bought the pasteles from the Pastele Shop. I liked the one from Alicia’s too…can’t wait until they reopen the regular store! ps: when I used to work across the street from Jackie’s (the old Tony Honda), my coworker called it “Nasty’s” lol I think she got food poisoning from there a couple of times 😝

The name of the original store was Charlie Tong’s. It was your typical local store back then that was owned and operated by this friendly Chinese family. The Pastele Shop actually used to be a game room and before that was a Korean BBQ Deli. Fond memories 🙏🏽.

I think the Pastele Shop cuts corners and does not use all of the ingredients. The Gandule rice is just red rice, lacking in Sofrito and Matuda. The same for the Pasteles, it’s just ok, nothing special, not even close. Sorry, homemade is better.
