Join me as I venture out to sea in my small boat from the picturesque Port Erin, located on the southwest coast of the island. In this video, I discuss the worrying decline in basking shark sightings in the area. We'll explore the possible reasons behind this trend, the impact on the local marine ecosystem, and what can be done to help conserve these magnificent creatures. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more updates on marine life and conservation efforts!

Great video mate. It is worrying considering technology and social media is increasing the ease of reporting sightings, yet clearly things are dropping off. What's the difference in water temperature in recent years? I read basking sharks prefer 8-14c and having spent plenty of time on the water the last couple years we are definitely experiencing warmer waters (maybe not so much this year with the late start and cold snaps).

I asked someone from Defra a few years back because I used to go on the boat trips to the calf as a kid and we would always see loads of basking sharks and I also used to see them when walking the dogs round langness. Their view was that rather than it being the wind turbines (which is what I thought it might be) it’s the high voltage cables and something makes them avoid crossing over them and we as an island are surrounded by them

Couldn’t say about the basking sharks if there’s still plenty of plankton around but there’s been some changes in my area too. Last year I found 16 dogfish (forgotten what kind) in a couple of hundred meters of strandline that I walk regularly and yesterday I found dozens of cuttlebones. I sometimes find a few bits or a small one but these are the biggest ever I’ve seen and I’ve heard from others it’s the same all down the Llyn peninsula.

My brother sees them in Cornwall when he goes sin the summer windsurfing. Never seen on myself, well only on youtube, tv etc. Would love to one day. That's strange with the Jellyfish... Hope to see them soon. Dang go pro, corrupted the filming of Dolphins 😲

I’m down in the Channel Islands and used to work at the harbour. I remember one time one of the high speed ferries came back to port with blood splashed all up the side of the vessel, I mean _loads_ of blood, probably some guts too. That’s the closet I’ve ever been to seeing one with my own eyes, a rather disappointing experience over all, two stars ⭐️⭐️

Ive seen them a few times in Keem bay on the very western side of Achill Island in west ireland. The water in that bay is very cold compared to the other beaches on Achill island so Im suspicious that the Basking sharks like colder water. Maybe they are still present in Manx waters but are further out in cooler water? Or maybe they have moved north to scotland.

really interesting fact about basking sharks - there are written historical sources of basking sharks being used for compost to increase the effectiveness of the soil as an alternative to manure. This was done under the idea of agricultural imporvement in the late 18th / early 19th centuries and highlights the extent that landowners went to in order to increase agricultural productivity. This was in Dorset, a place where sightings are rare today, but they must have been common enough a few hundred years ago to be used for soil nutritioning!

The west coast of Ireland is top place to see them from the Sceiligs/blaskets, off county clare and Achill Island (Keel beach, purteeen harbour, Dooagh and Keem Bay) We have only had 2 sightings this year off the east coast of Ireland off Wexford and i spotted one off Howth Head in Dublin. I think the basking sharks are following a migratory route and irish sea is seeing less sightings. Sightings in general are dropping off big time since June even off the west coast. Planton starts to sink from the top of the water so these sharks will go deeper. Class video. Very relaxing to watch

The eco system drops and picks up depending on many factors like food supply or weather etc, i wouldn’t worry too much, im sure the numbers will balance out and pick up again in time, just like all wildlife….!

We saw one last year off Niarbyl last year, we were going to log it with the MWDW but for some reason there is/was a 48hr waiting period before you could create an account or report anything. By the time we got the email through to say we could report it we'd moved on and forgotten.

Another great video. Could the lack of Basking Sharks (marine life in general?) be pollution/temp related? I don't know what the water quality around the IOM is like, but I can't help wondering if the well documented water quality issues around the UK coastline has an impact slightly further afield. Really enjoy the content, thanks for sharing.

Nice video, could the cold stormy weather be affecting the algae bloom and pushed it towards the English and Scottish coastline.
