For any inline skater or rollerblader out there I am guessing that most of you would choose to roll smooth tarmac. Skating along on a beautiful smooth surface is just immensely satisfying after all.
As much as I love a super smooth surface, to be honest if that’s all I had things would actually become a little boring. For me I do also like to challenge myself with my skating and so I also enjoy finding bumpy and uneven surfaces to roll.
In this video I am skating around a modern housing estate. It’s fast becoming my absolute favourite place to skate especially when I am just looking for an easy chilled roll. There is an absolute abundance of pathways here. They are all interlocking and sprawl all over the place which makes my skate sessions really interesting as I am very rarely just skating in a dead straight line.
Where is your best place to skate? What is your favourite surface to skate on? Which town or city do you regularly roll. Let me know in the comments!
Setup:
Seba FR1 2016 EU 42
Endless blading 90/110 frame
Intuition V2 medium liners
90mm Revolver wheels
REKD knee gaskets
GO PRO HERO 5
Kamkixx selfie pole (1metre)
The music in this video is from the KZfaq audio library

Absolutely love your videos, please keep them coming. I moved to Wells in Somerset last year and am currently scoping out various places I could potentially skate when the weather gets better. (I should emphasise, I'm trying to skate😉! , I'm definitely a beginner in my early 50's), when the weather gets better. Once I have mastered stopping I might see if I can rollerblade along the sea front at Burnham on Sea. I'd imagine there are a few good coastal paths to skate on in the uk...Brighton springs to mind, but unfortunately that's miles away from here.

Skilfully dodged those boxes on that path! I would’ve ended up in one face first. I skate in Glasgow along a canal cycle path, it has a variety of surfaces to contend with, cobbles and some angry swans but it’s all good fun but not too great on wheel wear.

Thanks for your content! I've been hooked on the City skate videos of Gloucester/ Chelt and like you are local to Gloucester! It's given me a confidence boost to get back on the skates after a 11 year break (stopped skating aged 20!) so bit the bullet yesterday and ordered a pair of FR skates. I'm sure it will take a while to get back into it but feel confident giving it another go after watching your playlists. Look forward to seeing some new content in the future!

London I find very interesting to skate, especially inner London as they have smoother and varied pavements and roads. It would be perfect if only if there were less rough roads and narrow paths. Oh and rain is annoying but that's more of a UK curse rather than London alone.

@@whittyskater How to select good places in advance to vacation or move to, w/many great places where it's smooth enough to enjoy inline skating? Do you or anyone know any good sources for that kind of info? I heard they recently installed a beautiful path along the entire beachfront on the ocean of Mazatlan in Mexico, but Google Maps no longer shows extreme close ups for most areas and the icon to switch to ground view is no longer there. Nice flow, Dude. My area has a nice blend of everything, including hills. I find rougher surfaces great for testing your balance, focus, and edges. Hunting the cleanest line over cracks and holes is a great game and is immensely satisfying at pace! But it takes it out of me way more than distance skating since everything needs to work so much harder. It's like having a sparring partner! I don't think there's a better way to level up your skill and confidence than to roll varied surfaces.

I haven't really had the chance to skate in the UK because of studying abroad (and I leave my skates here when back for Xmas and Summer Holidays). So most of my skating is done in Kosice, Slovakia. It's a proper mixed bag with new developments/super smooth fresh roads. I feel like I'll be spoiled when I'm back in the UK when it comes to pavements in comparison! Otherwise it's incredible and a fun way to explore the city and find hidden gems (as in super smooth roads but also coffee shops, pubs, restaurants and beautiful landscapes and architecture)!

Brighton. It’s so mixed and not great for super smooth and loads of hills. I love smooth and flat now but that’s because I’ve done my time with super rough roads street skating in London 20years ago. It was awful and I loved it! But my knees now wouldn’t handle more of that. I love some European cities and Australia for smoothness. You’d definitely be bored in Australia it’s so smooth but then your skating changes…. We all have our preferences. The trick is finding yours and enjoying them.

Hah, my area is full of so many potholes and cracks in the asphalt! Lots of winter weather up here (Montana, USA) wrecks our older roads that aren't paved with concrete. I've only been skating a few months (I'm 32!) and have learned to negotiate LOTS of gravel, holes, and bumpy terrain just by going out my front door. The university campus in my area is really nice to ride in though, as is the recently renovated fairground near my apartment. Lots of exploring to do! But yeah, my city is pretty rough to ride in.

Cardiff, Wales. It's a very mixed bag. You can get around much of the city with some careful planning, but many of the pavements are made of rectangular slabs which have become uneven and sit up at sharp angles to one another, and those are impossible to skate. But some roads and trails are perfectly smooth. The city is developing a joined-up network of dedicated cycleways, so we'll soon see how skate-friendly they turn out to be. But with planning it's not a bad city to skate in, and as my skills have developed (slowly!) I can handle more routes.

Hi WHITTYskater. I'm Eric, age 39. I just bought a pair of beginner skates and went for a 15 minute skate (if you can call it that) up the block and down the alley, then turned around and made it back home, barely without falling. I skated for about 7 years when I was young, nothing professional or too tricky. I'm taller and heavier now of course and my skate today has taught me a whole new lesson in life about my lack of balance. I heard you say in one of your videos that you started using inline skates at 37. I'm curious, how was the experience for you? Obviously challenging because learning anything new is... but, what kind of challenges did you face? My biggest challenge today seemed to me to be keeping my wheels, especially on my left foot, vertical. My foot felt like it wanted to walk off of the skates. I'm hoping it's just a balance problem and not some kind of skate size or quality problem. My feet and ankles are really quite snug in the skates. If you have any of your story told in your videos, story about your challenges with beginning skating, or any beginner tips videos, or you just feel like replying via comments, it would be really awesome and inspiring for me to hear about your success. I'll be checking out more of your videos and skimming through them. Thanks for sharing your experiences for people like me. ~Eric from WA, USA

My skating improved immensely after training in ballet, modern & modern jazz dance. Instructors all tell you everyone needs some beginning ballet, the only training that teaches advanced balance, posture & control for any possible posture (from excellent instructors - not mediocre instructors). Top male sports stars w/multi-million dollar contracts secretly train in ballet, for the huge edge they get from learning advanced balance & posture. They keep it secret for 2 reasons: so no one thinks they're a puff, & because they like having a huge edge over most players. Anyone can become world class in any sport, and/or martial art with advanced training in ballet plus especially lyrical modern jazz dance training which entails a lot of spinning and spinning from upright to floor back to upright moves keeping rhythm, providing great agility in most circumstances. Everyone ought to take the first 2 months of a Japanese Judo school. Since Judo involves a lot of throwing people, they first teach how to fall safely, starting with somersaults & side rolling on thick comfy mats. When you practice that a lot on the mats, you can then safely roll on any surface. Then you practice rolling out to the floor from all kinds of possible attacks and positions for the remainder of 2 months. This kind of training can actually protect you from getting hurt from most falling, even from a moving vehicle. That rolling really works! My favorite roller skating guys included a lot of gymnastic looking jumping and rolling without losing the beat of the music along with all their other cool moves, and when pile-ups caused by in-experienced skaters occurred right in front of them at the skating rink, they always jumped right over it without even loosing their rhythm, because they practiced moves like that all the time when there were no pile ups! They were extremely inspirational and fun to skate with! 🙏❤😉

Since I am like 1 month into skating, I enjoy the smooth surfaces of the tennis court down the st from my home to practice on. Only Problem, it's a tennis court and ppl who want to play tennis get first dibs on taking the court. Some folks r nice and will wait 20 minutes b4 interrupting my practice sessions. So I repay their kindness by heading out when they come in. I wish there was an empty parking lot newly paved near me to practice in. I have tried the paved path at the park on my street. lol there's a quick dip down into a pit of gravel and loose pebbles....👨‍👧‍👧☠ total trap But for an intermediate/ pro skater it's nothing. I didnt know how I should respond to it , just rolled over it I took me down. I didn't know to try the scissor stance. Lol that gravel pit put me on me arse! I'm from Liverpool full of rough roads and just getting started in skating what would you recommend and what website do you use?
@whittyskater
@whittyskater 2 жыл бұрын
I can only recommend the skates I have owned so check the descriptions of my videos for info on that or watch my video about the skates I own. I generally use LOCOSKATES or Slick Willies. Both UK shops.

I discovered the worst time is during rush hour and the worst place is the middle of the road lol. Apparently two or three people called the cops on me even though I was picking up litter and filled three big bags. Nothing worse than being pestered by a stupid cop.

Hello Richard! Hope you are fine! I truly miss seeing a new upload from you, like so many others. Maybe (hopefully) you have been enjoying skating without a camera in your hand lately. If thats the case I understand. Can we support you? Du you have a swish-number or something else? T-shirts? If you make a "40 and rollin" t-shirt a promise to buy! :) I also have a question. Answer when or if you have the time. If someone else know the answer feel free to comment. So, I´m wondering - if the Seba High light carbon are your favourite skates why do you mostly use the FR1 these days. Have you changed your mind? If so - why? I´m planning to buy the Seba High light carbon because I think they will fit me much better than the FR1 which I already have.. Do you still think they are worth the money? Cheers from Sweden

The highlights are my most comfy and precise skate but my FR1 With Endless 90 offers me a better all around skate for the city. The highlights are worth the money though. They are a beautiful skate. They just lack the toughness of the FR1 for city skating.

@@whittyskater Thanks for your answer! My favourite skates right now are my Seba CJ carbon. They are super-comfy, quite precise and very low and stable. They sure can take a lot of beating as well. Maybe I should stick with them a bit longer when I city-skate.(Using the rockered Kizer Element frame with 90 wheels make them feel like my Endless 90 but 2 cm lower and more stable)

@@whittyskater Well thanks....I guess🤣 I know it's very subjective but I want to get into the hobby but I was wondering how often you have to change them on average. Once a month or once every 6 months...?
@whittyskater
@whittyskater 2 жыл бұрын
There is no one answer to this I'm afraid. Too many variables. Depends how often you skate, how long you skate, what surfaces you skate, what hardness your wheel is etc. I've got wheels I had to change after a few months and others I've never changed. My advice..just go skate. Rotate your wheels regularly as this will prolong them and when they do wear out get some more.
