You're basically explained my experience so far. I skated a long time ago as a kid. At 36 I wanted to do something while learning a new skill while Covid-19 is still a thing. I was going to get a OneWheel but settled on inline skates. Mostly because it's less expensive and that its something familiar. Also because I can learn new things. Right now I'm focusing on stopping. Almost got a good T stop going. I'm having a blast skating around town with my favorite playlists. It's a great stress reliever. It's also funny seeing people's reactions for its something most people don't do. I can't wait to learn more.

It's very encouraging to see how much you can learn, even as an adult, if only you practice with dedication. Your stance and balance look like you've been skating since early childhood. Getting started on quality skates also was a good approach. My first pair was so crappy that I almost lost interest. Luckily not for too long though :D

Thank you. People often ask me what skates they should get as a beginner. Although its hard to recommend a specific pair I would always encourage them not to buy just a cheap pair. You are right that a decent pair of skates can make learning alot better.

Start with one-side skating. Push with one leg only and make sure that you glide on another one with proper ankle, knee and wheels position. You can even hold your knee with hand so it stays above the front part of the boot. Try to make longer glides each training. Do it for two weeks at least. Meanwhile, at home on a carpet or outside on the grass practise sideway steps over an obstacle. Mind the proper legs position and vertically aligned wheels. Ideally, step over the cycling helmet, but you can start with a wooden stick. This will prepare you for proper strides and glides, so you'll learn tricks faster and, more importantly, don't have to re-learn to skate properly.

@@l.f.cliverpoolfilmclub4526 What skates do you have? If you have "fitness" skates with soft boot, it will take more time. More time to follow (not my actually) advise in the previous comment. That will help you to condition feet and activate neuro-muscular connectivity, so your wheels stay vertical and point forward. But again: depending on where are you skating, "pyramid" positioned wheels may lead to higher risk, God Forbid, of injury: when the skate encounters small rock or wooden stick, the skates (especially on soft boot) may twist the ankle or put the skated out of balance. You can rollback to the beginning, but here is what I am talking about: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLJjiqialdaZhHU.html

I'm 33 and just started skating this week - I used to skate a bit in my early teens, but its been at least 15 years since I strapped on a pair of inline skates. I've had my new skates for 2 days now, and I'm a bit more shaky than I thought I'd be - stuff I could do without thinking as a kid now seem more difficult and scary (turning around to go backwards in motion, certain stops, little jumps, skating from one surface onto another ie/ tarmac to gravel). But I'm full of enthusiasm to get better, and I plan to go out every day on my street until I feel more confident. Your videos are an inspiration man, thank you!

Like you, I was amazed at how city skaters could move; until that point I'd always found getting from A - B on my skates very difficult on UK roads and paths, and always confined myself to designated, generally smooth, areas. It was channels such as your own that compelled me to do more and really get a grip! Well done. Was pretty happy to hear you started at age 37 and to read all the comments here: gives me some confidence getting back into it at nearly 49 after 15+ years away. I learned ice skating back when I was 21/22 and that lead me to rollerblading back in the mid-90s. Eventually used to commute 5 miles along country lanes each day to work, but before that lived in Leeds and London and for 2-3 years used to rollerblade around both. At age 30 I got a pro instructor to get my ice skating up to a decent standard and could do most stuff on ice, backwards crossovers, switching forward to backward without thinking about it much, hockey stops, fast lateral moves and spins, the works. But not done either ice nor inline skating in 15 years. Recently splashed out on a decent pair of Bauer Vapor ice hockey skates properly fitted for my feet at a specialist hockey store in Sheffield a month or so ago and was appalled by how shite I am on the ice after so long! Can't even go backwards in a straight line with confidence any more, one-footed work very shaky and unstable. MASSIVELY disheartening. Last week I found out my local ice rink (in Scotland) closes May til late August too. Baffling. So I have ALSO just splashed out on a pair of Mission Inhaler WM01 inlines and figured I'll try rollerblading again. I'm 49 next month, but you starting at 37 (I know you've still a long way before 49 haha!) and mostly the comments on this vid have helped make me believe in myself a bit more with regards to re-learning and at some point becoming as good as you look on the skates. I don't think I was ever *that* good - it pre-dated my ice skating tuition so I couldn't even go backwards on rollerblades ever and we didn't have KZfaq to help learn! Back in the day my rollerblades had a pretty sophisticated braking system on the back. The Missions will be the first skates I've used with no brake pad. Kinda scary, but hey I don't have it on my ice skates either I guess haha

You learned an amazing amount in a few short years. I’ve skated on and off for much longer, and consider myself a very good skater, but haven’t seriously attempted half of the city manoeuvres you do routinely. I think the key seems you’re very analytical and like to break things down into a series of steps, and you’re persistent and loathe to not ‘get it.’ Those are keys I always see in “fast learners.”

Just ordered my first pair of inline skates - I'm 55. I skated (ice and quad) TONS as a kid, and also just bought my first pair of skis, which I've taken out several times and I'm absolutely loving it! I never could do a full hockey stop on ice skates, so I'm a bit nervous to learn that on the inline skates, but I can do it on skis. I need something to do when the snow is gone that will keep me in ski condition, and I live near a miles-long paved trail & would like to take my dog with me. May fall on my face if he passes another dog, so I prob have to get pretty good before I do that. Thanks for sharing your story!

Just turned 27. I've always been in to cycling and kick biking (not kids scooters, but large 26" wheeled kick bikes). I'm now looking for another wheel based skill to learn, and some videos of inline scating on here. The biggest hurdle for me is always self confidence and what people will think in public. But I can't wait to give this a go. Looks great fun.

Mate you have really good skills. I´m 40 and I used to skate about more or less 10 years ago, I jumped on my old roller skates a few weeks ago and I felt pain inmmediatelly but because my 5 years old daugther is learning I decided got back on track, I am buying new ones this week and start to hit the road again, just for fun, I really enjoyed before and I pretty sure this kind of practice helps a lot with your health, that is my goal. Keep it up mate. Good videos.

dude. i have no idea how you're going around the town so smooth. i remember trying to skate around my housing estate as a kid and every little rock and crack fucking me up lol. but I've just ordered some inline skates and I'm ready to try again. thats probably where people's perceptions of it being dangerous come from: its marketed to kids so often as something easy to do when its not. i imagine many people fell like i did (and i had ice skated reasonably well before trying it)!

Nicely done, sir. I always enjoy your commentary, so keep it up. Your use of the phrase “Hello world!” suggests that you might be a software engineer. Your methodical approach to learning to skate is another clue that you’re a critical thinker by trade! I was glad to hear your mentioning the rough terrain in Cheltrnham; I’ve always been surprised how much rough you tolerate, and it reminds me of my skating days in the UK as a child. These days I skate much smoother purpose-built trails and city streets in the US. We have it very good here! I skate a pair of Rollerblade Twister 80mm, and a pair of Rollerblade Tempests 110mm. Keep it up! Thanks.

WHITTYskater yes, I do get back to the UK, but less so now that I have so much going on here (wife and teenagers), plus it’s about $2000 for a return flight during the summer, so unless I fly solo it’s really cost prohibitive.

Wow. I know you always talk about how bad the pavement is where you live, but it really stood out in this video. That close up of the street at 9:26....man. Skating that on 4x80's looks rough. You must have rocks for calves. I cover some rough roads here in rural Washington state, but I'm on 3x110. I started around the time I turned 48 (50 now). It's been an amazing journey so far, including skating long distances, commuting, and using skateparks. You can do it. I've been skating since I was like 6 years old, but when I was out of my teens the hobby kind of faded away. I recently moved to Munich and picked it back up, thankfully it not a skill you forget when once had it. The level of freedom it gives you when it comes to traversing the city is amazing. And with good bike infrastructure here there is tons of great space to skate. The lane along the river has got to be my favorite. It is not even that rare here, I regularly see other people skating.

Nice video & I enjoyed what you said. I like cycling but decided I wanted to give inline skating a go. I began going to a rink & riding on quad skates. I never really got it then I strained my knee from skating. I can’t stand up on my inline skates without them rolling out from under me. I hit my head twice & didn’t do the rest of my body any favors. But I’m not giving up. I’m going on the bike path on my quad skates now wearing upgraded indoor/outdoor wheels in the summer assuming I can go outside. I also bought a unicycle to learn something new Work on balance which I hope will help with inline skating. That should also give me confidence which I don’t have on inline skates. Great video. very interesting insights into your reason de etre (yeah that is spelt incorrectly on purpose) I was quite surprised by the Aggresive revalation. Shouldn't be though what with Bill Stoppards recent change to aggresive and my own interest in aggresive. (those M12s are calling me!) I do think that city skating is more popular on youtube (shop task, tiago, asha, bill stoppard all bigger than channels that are just grinding, only lino has a large following and does grinding. until now) and even though i do watch all the aggresive too, i still prefer a flow skate around a town or city. good luck with your future plans mate all the best.

Glad to see a lot of older folks here, but being a 19-year-old university student who has started regular skating again and with skating in my area being well not considered "cool" I just dont care it's so much fun it was embarrassing at first especially on campus but once you get over it. you sort of become empowered as you don't let others judgment get to you.
