The first time I arrived in Sumeru, I immediately loved how lush, green and vibrant it looked. I thought: "What could go wrong here?" A few minutes later, I ran into my first Withering and the rest is history. I would advice, that people wait before they judge. Natlan is the Nation of War, but it also has hot springs and is a popular tourist destination. Don't think this would be possible, if there was war everywhere constantly!

I think everyone is taking the idea that Natlan is the nation of War too literally. Until now every nation has had some twist or subversion of its ideal: - The cost of Freedom and how much it is worth when it is given by a God - Contracts not being something permanent and how not being stuck in the past is the only way to move forward - Eternity not being stagnation and how change is inevitable - Wisdom and Knowledge not being synonymous and how ignorance can blind even those who call themselves wise - Justice being subjective and how everyone creates their own justice. So expecting Natlan to literally be a nation in constant war doesn't make much sense when it's much more likely that either the "War" will be something more metaphorical or completely different from the standard concept.

What if the war is ceremonial/traditional battles that continuously occur between the tribes to decide the superior Vishap/Tribe? So, since the war is between the 6 territories, they let the outsiders travel in peace (or with assigned protection) to the (central?) neutral space of the region where the hot springs or the Pyro Archon (or both) would be based.

I believe that there is a large significance of secrecy in Natlan. In Fontaine, Focalors told us that for the Gods of Justice, the ideal itself was always to support existence. In Sumeru, Wisdom is closely connected to growth. Physical, mental, and spiritual growth comes with wisdom, and to cause growth in others is to pay the cost of growth. Rukkha and Nahida knows this best. Inazuma revealed that there are many methods to pursuing the ideal of Eternity, as the God of Eternity, Ei should’ve been accepting towards these methods, but instead chose the method of Stasis to pursue Eternity. Only recently has she returned all of the gazes that she took away from the people … quite literally. What I’m trying to suggest, is that despite a Nation’s praise for their respective ideal, it’s the Archon themselves who practice this ideal on a personal perspective. Murata’s (yes, I believe she’s alive. Yes, there’s a touch of cope in this belief, but also a genuine theory behind it. And even if I’m wrong, we’re still talking about the current Pyro Archon either way.) personal perception of War may be the intent to keep certain things a secret, within reason. This suggests that Natlan’s secrets will be even more guarded than the other nations. (Keep in mind that the Gnosis is meant to be a secret, so the Harbingers in Natlan will definitely be in trouble in that regard.) “When the God of War shares this secret with the traveler, it’s because she has her reasons” (this personal perception of secrecy would also explain the redacted name in the Pyro Gemstone.) “The Victor shall burn bright, while the loser must turn to ash”. We hear Apep mention this without mentioning Natlan … this phrase is significant to us because we’ve heard it in a Spoiler, this phrase should mean nothing to the Traveler at this time. This made me think, why would this phrase be mentioned out of nowhere, before realizing that this phrase isn’t a mere saying, but a philosophy, or in Genshin’s case … a Principle? Is it possible that Celestia had a Heavenly Principle responsible for whatever this philosophy means? I mean, the saying does sound very similar to “When two cultures clash, the loser is obliterated, and the winner writes the history books”

Bro Inazuma looked more like a nation of war than Natlan does, Inazuma was isolated and nobody could leave, whereas Natlan looks like something my little brother drew then threw loads of paints over it

There is probably war in the nation, but the initial area we were shown is probably where the "safe zone" is. You know in a battlefield there is always a safe zone. I'm sure we just haven't seen all of Natlan.

Personally at this point i think war in Natlan is purely ritualistic in nature. Where the whole point is to just die to appease gods and go home. This would also fit the Aztec theme, as it was a common thing in the area.

We only get to see the first part of Natlan. Perhaps it's like Sumeru. We first had a rainforesr living up to the dendro element but then we got a whole giant desert. So Natlan's second patch could be all ravaged and dark, where the air smells like brimstone and fire

For almost 4 years we've had NPCs tell us Natlan is a tourist destination due to the hot springs and welcoming to visitors. Anyone who was expecting all out war corner to corner wasn't paying attention. War has probably evolved the same way Furina turned Justice into a spectacle.

People gaslightning themselves then getting upset that their headcanon wasn't a thing. Did Fontaine feel like "Justice" was oozing around in every piece of land and water? No. Neither did Liyue, Inazume or Sumeru with their own concepts, the only one that kinda, maybe felt like its concept was Mondstadt, and that's because it's pretty vanilla. People ignoring that "war" is 90% talks and 10% fighting yet thinking Natlan was going to be straight up Mordor will never not be hilarious.

At least Natlan still has the gang wars between rebellious kids and street mobsters in the wild.

Fontaine was also described by NPCs to have poisoned waters and having a power problem but we really didn´t see anything like that.

maybe our perception of war in this case is wrong. although personally i hope it is a nation wide civil war, it could just be one great competition as you've said but maybe for a more elusive prize than pride, perhaps the gnosis. what would be an easier way to obtain it than to toss one's hat in the ring?

Y'know, that's a fair point. My head canon was similar to yours. In addition, mine also had a Colosseum where they do Aztec games and maybe even fights to the death. But I kind of like the assumption that the stopped doing the war thing and became zen or something 😭

3:00 To be honest, it was always obvious for me that Natlan is in war among it's own people and not an outside force. Edit: Don't forget that Fontaine looked a wonderful place on the outside, but it had one of the darkest secrets in the series so far.

"Who would travel to a war torn country" you say that but my uncle in law thought the couple weeks leading up to Russia v. Ukraine was a good time to go to Ukraine & he inevitably had to be smuggled out. In all seriousness though, the current group in power using travel/ tourism along & military occupation to maintain control of the nation (i.e. Kingdom of H'awaii v. U.S.) would be an intriguing plot line to explore. Additionally, it also fits with the geopolitics of the ethnic groups they are taking inspiration from for Natlan. That being said, idk if this is something they would realistically do since it is a radical anti-colonial stance. Then again, they did give a whole "Land Back" speech in Fontaine.

I think there is an underground map under it just like sumeru. That's where we saw the lava and shit in the first Natlan Preview. Just like i expect Snezhnaya to have contrast of harsh desolate wilderness but also some pretty cosy and welcoming towns.

You know, I wasn’t too concerned about Natlan not looking like a nation of war, but your last comment does sit with me. I mean, that one guy talks about boxing and the guy from the Finding Saurian event talks about a local legend, none of the visitors are talking about seeing epic battles. Even if Natlan’s wars aren’t depressing, I still think visitors would think the fights are cool enough to talk about with others. But I don’t know. Maybe Hoyoverse is purposefully not showing us any war or letting us hear these cool stories from NPCs for a reason

It's possible the war is ecological: we have multiple "races" of vishap, all likely with the general dragon ability to influence their environment in ways competing vishaps won't like, all closely tied to the various tribes. If the vishaps don't find whatever they're looking for to make hatchlings or the hatchlings grow up in the wrong environment and switch developmental paths (I'm not certain how vishap biology works), a tribe can be defeated and have to incorporate into another without a single act of overt violence. This would also imply the war is unavoidable: simply by choosing to exist you're part of it. That does raise the question of how new tribes keep turning up, but perhaps heroes of note are considered to have become their own tribe; since the war between tribes is ongoing regardless of whether anybody's trying to fight, this ought to take care of that problem.

People really need to use a Braincell. Firstly, we were teased essentially the entrance to Natlan. The first regions. Like Sumeru, the war torn regions will be released in later patches. Secondly, every war torn nation can have beautiful and peaceful areas. Look at literal real life countries lmao. Honestly ppl are just hating for the sake of hating now. If you don't like hoyo or genshin anymore then leave. Goodness.

maybe the "nation of war part" is refering to the history and archon's ideal,but i think there'll be a looming war in the archon quest.(maybe act 4/act 5) it could be fatui armies storming natlan trying to take the gnosis by force with capitano as their leader(perhaps negotiation fails). perhaps another being/beings outside teyvat suddenly comes and there'll be war. Heavenly principles suddenly wakes up when il capitano gets the pyro gnosis and there'll be a sort of smaller scale war between fatui armies and whatever celestia armies will be (my speculation would be that vision bearers who ascends,turns into either valkryies,einherjar,or straight up war angels). maybe even nibelung sudden return and brought evil dragons to cause chaos and the war between humans (possible celesia intervention)and dragons began,in my head,its gonna be like darksouls 1 intro

My theory: Natlan's war used to be war, nowadays, it has changed to sports competition, and that's why the three playable characters shown last teaser are designed like that (clothing and movement skills) and why the martial arts guy mentions the shadow boxing. Its the Olympics. Just that. Some mf will try to bring back war tho. And I bet it won't be Capitano.

War in Natlan has likely evolved to be ritualistic, kind of like the Aztec Flower War. I suspect the Cataclysm and the current Pyro Archon had a hand in Natlan flipping the switch and turning into a tropical tourist hotspot, but we'll see once her sad backstory gets revealed.

I'm personally going with the belief that the other three tribes not yet revealed have a whole lot more in show for the main quest. Doubt it's simply butterflies and rainbows in the first half, and then bloodshed and chaos in the second.

I mean, I understand why people's expectations were dashed thinking Natlan was this dark warn torn country all the time and all, but we're literally at peace time right now. Maybe a couple hundred years ago, sure, you can imagine it like that, but not now. At least, not from the first area. For all we know, they probably practice "War" scenarios now through gladiator battles like how Vennessa and her tribe were subjected to in Mondstadt but on their own terms, between the different tribes in their land.

Natlan are fighting the fatui and the 10 tribes plus main Natlan are fighting other tribes that are trying to steal the power or take back land that was originally there’s and also trying to fight to become a official tribe. so fatui and tribes versus The 10 official tribes and homeland Natlan and the Pryo archon

My guess really is that the endless ring of war in Natlan is a ceremonial rite in celebration of their Archon. I also think that war could possibly be considered a sport in Natlan, because of the shadowboxing mention.
