This Is Our Retirement

Күн бұрын

Financial independence without saving $1 million and live life well. We started financially over when we emigrated to Canada, the house we owned in the U.K. Which we were counting on to release our equity, to start a new life in Canada suffered a large fall in price because of a housing crash. We had a lot less money than we had thought, so we were starting our financial lives over at aged 38. Our early retirement where the money came from is our story of retirement.
We share the secret to early retirement and show you where the money came from and how we were able to make the money back, create capital enough to retire at 55 and enjoy travel in retirement. The principles are simple anyone can do it you just have to take that first step.
We are not financial planners or advisors, we recommend before making any investment decisions you should consult a professionally licensed financial advisor.

You may not have money at the time, but you had each other - believe me, it makes all the difference. I am an immigrant who came to Canada in her thirties with a small child. Within two years, I had to start all over again, becoming a single mother. I am retired now and living a comfortable life, but I know, that with a partner like you are to each other, I could move the mountain. 😊

We started saving at 40 in our 401k and the last 10 years have maxed our contributions with catch up when we became eligible. We are 56 and have over a million saved. So, it certainly can be done! We plan to retire in 1-2 years. I am writing these to encourage couples who are in their 40’s and may feel it’s to late to make a difference

We did the same thing! Paid ourselves, paid off our mortgage on a small house fast (no big vacations), sold the house and reinvested, paying cash for our next place, maintained and renovated as we could afford it, then did it again! Everything sold now, retired at 53 with a decent pension, big savings in the bank, and bought a very modest, easy to maintain, small home cash.

You two have an impressive story, raising 2 kids and owning nice homes and still retiring early. I also retired at 55, I'm 60 now. Never married though, no kids. Just took advantage of my jobs 401ks, lived minimally and invested my after-tax money, around 55 I realized I was never going to spend what I'd accumulated, so why keep working? I love the freedom of not working, but I'm still trying to figure out what to do with myself. Sorry for the ramble, good show guys 🙂

It is difficult trying to find something, we based a lot around our life long hobby of photography and that got us into producing editorial stock photos then video and now KZfaq. Along the way learning new photo skills, editing and not forgetting teaching ourselves financial planning. Try and stay curious to learn something or follow current affairs, if you were a good student learn something new. We really appreciate your support of our channel, have a nice weekend.

Thanks for sharing your personal experiences about this important topic. I'm in my early 50s and pretty much have been on a similar path as you and that's why I love watching your videos. Funny enough, it was your love for Portugal (I'm from the Azores but live in Canada) that got me interested in your initial videos but listening to your financial plan has helped confirm to me that I've been on a right path with my plans which is so similar to yours. Great story! My wife and I also live in Ontario and retired 3 years ago. We're 58 and 57 now. She also read the Wealthy Barber many years ago and, much like you two, we paid ourselves first and helped put our two kids through university. In addition to investing in somewhat disappointing mutual funds, we used the equity in our home to buy more real estate. First buying a rental house and then a commercial building which we kept rented for 13 years and then sold it for FIVE times what we paid for it.

You are so relatable. I read the Wealthy Barber as well, and it showed me and my husband that you didn’t have to have a high paying job to retire very comfortably. We were fortunate enough to retire at 55 as well because of paying ourselves first too. We always bought used vehicles and went on modest vacations with our children yearly. 🙌🙌

Keeping your eyes on the prize both figuratively and literally! You are poster kids for living free of debt. It is great you planned for the time you would end working and begin another chapter of your life. My partner and I lately have started talking about the "R" word. I'm 64 he is 56. We both enjoy our work--I'm a commercial photographer and he is a photo set designer and prop stylist--but just last night driving back from a job with a tricky client he turned and said "maybe we should retire". We have the funds to retire (with no debt and ancillary income) but we enjoy our work so I'll have to see how frequently this topic starts to come up in the near future.

Personally when one says “ maybe we should retire” you need to have a very frank discussion with each other especially if you have adequate funds 💰. You can’t buy time or health we just did a video called Reality of Retirement it would be a good one for you watch together especially as you are 64 . In our case Tina is 64 and Norm is 65 , we took early retirement at 58 and 60 and it gave us a brand new chapter in our lives and we have never looked back .Thanks for watching and have a great weekend Cheers 🍷🌺🍺

Wonderful video that everyone should see. Very impressive money management. Well done and congratulations. You both planned things out quite well. Mutual funds are over rated as they are slow movers and have high expenses. Taking charge of your own investment like you did requires dedicated research which unfortunately most people won't do for lack of interest. You reap what you sow and your success is the proof. I've subscribed to your videos as they are inspiring.

I'm very happy for you and good job :) your videos are really interesting, hearing a perspective like yours of coming from england and starting over with all the excitement of a new country or two to get to know, i retired at 55 to , the hardest part was getting used to not working for the first few years. that and not being able to buy whatever you see thinking i'll pay later, now it's planned ahead. and the peace of mind thinking everything is paid now i put the work in does sink in so it's time to relax :)

That’s strange I (Tina ) at first couldn’t grasp the thought of retiring when I was working but when we put a plan in place to retire and sell the house in 18 months it all made sense. Since we retired never even thought about work LOL 😂😂we have been so busy travelling and enjoying life Cheers 🍺🍷🌺

I just want you to know I enjoy your channel so much. I am not sure why KZfaq recommended you to me, but I am sure glad it did, even if I’m (probably) outside the demographic-I’m not married, I’m not quite 40, I’m American…. But I love hearing your stories, and I’ve subscribed so I don’t miss any of them. Thank you both for being you and doing what you do. 👍😁👍

Thanks Tina and Norm for another great video! You really hit the nail on the head - Pay yourself first! My story is similar to yours. When I was almost 40, I started to put in 10% in my company's 401K program (now I put in 25%) and put money into dividend paying stocks (which get re-invested). Paid off the house 2 years ago. I'm now 60 and retiring in 16 months (maybe earlier). Wife is already retired. I can't wait!

Great advice. I live in the UK and walked away from the treadmill of existence at 48. Bought a property at auction in 1999 and sold a year later for a profit of 20%. Did the same thing a couple of times during the following 10 years - buy then sell (never rented though). I am on my final detached property in Snowdonia (bought at auction) in 2016. Now worth more than double what I paid. Going to sell and cash in the 3 properties I now own outright and live the good life with my son at his property in Paderne, Algarve (which he bought at auction).Yes, I am now 69 and it's been hard work but I have enriched myself not some boss. If one has the years ahead of them get on the housing ladder and do whatever it takes. Tip: Don't forget to also drip feed some capital into high dividend yielding blue chip stocks.

I listened carefully to your story...I don’t plan on selling my real estate though so I plan on working much longer. Too much went into it and I value it so much and there’s a story behind each that means I was meant to keep them and I treated them the best. To each his and her own. I learned my lesson spending the recent stimulus on a stock purchase as I had been cruising along well in that area. I did buy for long term though. I decided to really pay down this mortgage heavy instead, the other is almost done.

Thanks so much for your clear and useful information. We could really relate to your situation. We did similarly and are now ready to retire and eventually downsize. We think one thing that could be added to this discussion you presented today is the value of being a couple and staying together. Many of our friends who were on a good path to financial independence did not make it because they broke up. That caused them to liquidate whatever they had managed to accumulate and they ended up much less fortunate financially. While we are not advocating staying in a truly toxic relationship, we feel that nowadays couples are much more prone to give up under the slightest amount of pressure rather than seeking help and perhaps saving the relationship. Single people in Canadian society have a far harder time carving out a financially independent future, and there is something to be said for the teamwork approach.
