I beg to differ with your opinion about the book. It is not supposed to give you just murder mystery vibes. It’s much more than that. It is more about experiencing the life of Kya and how she dealt with loneliness all her life and how she connected with nature. I can clearly agree that this is a classic book and it’s not for everyone.

I disagree, the book definitely tried to lean into a thriller/mystery element by the two timelines unfolding and leading to the “event”. Otherwise, what was the point of the trial? Owens could have left it out entirely and just told the story of a girl growing up alone in the marsh and how that relationship shaped her into the women she became.
@jananisathiamoorthy8164

@@tarynmarie9066 I did not say the book was not written for mystery readers. All I am trying to say is mystery and murder was just a part of Kya’s world. She happened to do the murder because she was alone and had to survive. It is not like a random mystery book you pick up and read the book just for the triller story. In my opinion, this book should be picked up to understand how loneliness can affect a person in different ways and how it can change an ordinary girl into a murderer in order to survive alone in the Marsh.

Completely disagree. I love romance but this book didn’t need anymore of it. Felt so interested about her family and how heartbreaking it was. And to see her relationships with the few people who did help her was so lovely. Also the wildlife descriptions of the marsh were beautiful to me

I personally loved this book, but I can completely see where people don’t like it and find it to be slow and boring. It definitely is slow paced, but I was gripped and sucked in by chapter 3. I didn’t think it was repetitive, I actually felt like not a single word was wasted in this book and everything was necessary to building the plot and the characters.

I loved the book but was so disappointed at how Delia Owens rushed through Kya and Tate reuniting at the end. I would have loved if Kya and Tate had their moment to reconnect in the marsh instead of the cops coming to get state in the end. We went through enough bs with Chase and Kyas entanglement, I was waiting for another third of the book to really go into detail about Tate and Kyas matured love. I loved the book overall but the ending, to me, felt rushed

As a parent of a 5 year old, my heart strings were pulled in a way that I don't think non-parents could relate. The mom leaving, the child being left alone and vulnerable. Jumpin and his wife looking after her. I think I enjoyed it more because I read it through the lens of a mother.

This book is amazing!!! I'm sorry you didn't like it. I thought the love of nature was so beautifully described just because I vibe with this character. I live in a mountain town in Colorado so the feelings she has for the marsh are feelings I've experienced here with a different biome. I can see if you're a plot based person why this wouldn't do it for you but I adored this.

personally i think this book is a masterpiece. even though the past chapters were tedious i think that it really emphasizes the length of time in which kya is isolated and shows how lonely she truly was. but then once you get to the trial the action really kicks in. anyways great review!

also unfortunately i think that the movie didn’t do the book justice. they really skipped over all the important parts of her childhood so when you see how the town treats her like an outsider it doesn’t hit as hard

I think one of the biggest things with Where The Crawdads Sing is how impeccably language is used to show my of Kya. I notably am not a fan of many classics or "future classics", but I was very impressed by the depth of the writing style as you can feel Kya age through the changing vernacular. I'm also a nerd though hahaha.

I finished the book recently and just saw the movie. Movie's pretty good but a bit rushed in places. I enjoyed this book overall, not a total favorite but still good. Because of the praise and my mom loving it a lot, my expectations were higher. I was just not completely into it at first, it was pretty slow and even 200 or so pages in I wasn't reading too fast. The trial part kept me more invested and I did really like Tate and his love for Kya. The ending made me look at the whole thing closer, and I did enjoy it much more when it was all done. The long isolation narrative was necessary but I didn't know how to feel for some time. I totally understand where you're coming from!

*SPOILERS!! I completely agree with you!! The first half of the book seemed pointless and unnecessarily repetitive, it felt like the trial to the end was rushed, the poetry aspect was so random and didn’t fit to the rest of the narrative?? I hated the way she made the timeline of the murder seem impossible, and made it out to be a wrongful arrest/framing, and the town generally exonerated her afterwards, but she did the crime!! She deserved the treatment she got at the trial! And the timeline that couldn’t have happened 5 chapters ago is suddenly what actually went down? If I didn’t know the author’s backstory, I would say it was a generally poorly planned & poorly executed novel. However, knowing that the author is wanted as an ACCESSORY TO MURDER in Africa, and was possibly involved in more violent crimes that she believes are justified, it feels like she wrote the whole book to justify her own actions 😬😬😬

@fluffysomething-or-other2724
@fluffysomething-or-other2724 Жыл бұрын
That argument would probably be more solid if it weren't for the fact that Chase literally tried to rape her and likely would have raped and killed her had she not actively murdered him instead. But that's ignoring the blatant plot holes that the defense attorney himself uses to exonerate her -- there actually IS no way she could've murdered him that night and that doesn't change because of the plot twist at the end. The plot twist really did feel shoehorned in -- a satisfying plot twist, I suppose, but still illogical and out of place. It would've made more sense if Tate had killed him and she was just blamed for it, and no one knew until they both got old. That would've been more meaningful IMO.
@jasondo3001

as I was watching the movie, when her brother came to visit her, I had an epiphany. I thought maybe she’s trying to cover for him, and that it was her brother who killed Chase, maybe in a scuffle and he accidentally fell. That would have made more sense. But no.
@amywong7710
@amywong7710 Жыл бұрын
I think that the reason why kya killed chase was because it was a life or death situation. Chase was stalking her and trying to find her to either rape her, kill her, or both. There was a line where it said something like who decides to die, and I think at that moment she realized it was either her or him that would die. Also I mean she was raised basically a feral child, and she was described as a wild animal. So I think what the author was going for was that her “animal instincts” came in and she decided to murder than to be murdered. But I do agree that it’s weird that the author is wanted for MURDER in Africa 😳. Now that’s weird but in the story I think it makes sense to kya’s character, and also the context, that she would murder someone.

Thanks for the honest book review. When I saw the movie trailer, I was a little surprised. I judged the book on the title and thought it would be more like "Their Eyes Were Watching God.". I understand what you're saying about making a better movie-- what I interpret that as is "if you cut out the slow-paced parts of this book, you'd have a good story." I feel sorry for the future high school students who will have to read repeatedly about how she made grits and went to the marshes.

I loved this book, but can see why it's not everyone's cup of tea. I am such a nature baby and loved the description of the marsh and how it became her family. The forests, fields and coastline around my own childhood home became that for me. And I found it interesting to see how a child might learn how to survive on her own. And I liked that the romance wasn't your cheesy normal love story. It's a slow book and very different to what I normally read. Will I read it again? No. But I did really enjoy it.

It is a glorious book, and I definitely see it standing the test of time. Her use of language is so precise, but the triumph is really the use of nature as a character. Being that the writer is a wildlife scientist, it was so beautiful how she used her world view to tell such a glorious story about the nature of man. Just a gorgeous book that like nature, can’t be rushed but must be allowed to unfold at its own pace to be truly appreciated.

I 💯 agree with everything you said. I felt the *exact* same way. The book was boring and overhyped. I can’t imagine that anyone was surprised by the ending; you could see it a mile away. The thing that I disliked the most about it is what I thinks lot of people loved about it, and that’s her adoration for the marsh. The book is like a love letter to the location. I felt like the book tried to do too much and in doing so it failed to hit the bar on any of them. Wasn’t really a thriller. Wasn’t really a coming of age book, wasn’t really a literary fiction. I continue to be astounded at people who loved this book. But that just goes to show that there’s an audience for every story. I agree that the movie will be better; it’ll lean stronger on the thriller than the other elements and I think that will be what ultimately separates it and elevates it from the book.

I agree with you. The book was well written in that the prose was beautiful. However, I couldn't connect with any of the characters. There wasn't really a plot to the story, except the murder mystery. Without that part, the book would be basically a journal. I think this is a book that will be considered a classic and will be studied in school, but that's only because of the writing style. If there had been more romance or more dramatic flares with Chase and Tate it would have been far more interesting.
