Trying to decide which airplane to build. Take the survey and help me make the decision. The list has been narrowed to the Vans RV-8, RV-14, RV-10, and the Velocity. In the video I explain my thought process on narrowing the list down between all of these aircraft builds and now I need help making the final decision. Use the link below to take the survey, and also please give me your thoughts in the comments on which aircraft and why.

I've been wanting an RV9 for a long while, using a Yamaha 3cyl Turbo engine. If it "has" to fly upside down, the RV14 would be my choice. Velocity would be my ultimate build, but takes much longer than a Van's.

That's a good dilema to have. I heard somewhere that you can't use an experimental for charity flight work. If that is a factor, you'd have to keep the Piper. in that case, go with the RV8. If not do the Velocity. That thing is sweet, and I can't say anyone else on KZfaq has built one... That may be a detriment to you as a builder though, since there are significantly fewer Velocity's and a lot smaller knowledge pool.

All good points. I’ll check into the experimental issue. Thank you for the feedback

honestly probably the 14, or 8. I would try to ride in each and see what you think.

Velocity insurance will be 6x the cost of an Arrow if you can get it. You will also have to constantly be buying props, as all take damage even if just sitting still.

Do you want comfort and ability to get somewhere quickly, or more sport flying? Gonna have to make up your mind. Take you places economically and comfortably and cover ground fast would be a Velocity. Good news is new avionics are cheep for uncert A/C. What do you do for a living? Is travel required? PS. I wrote Velocity even before looking at the caption above. and they will do a great job of helping you the most to do final assembly.

Yeah the velocity kind of check all the boxes… travel, speed, comfort, 4 seats, and aerobatic.. not sure if I really want all the resin fun every day or not though. But I’ve had my eye on that thing for 20 years. I fly commercially for my job, so this is more for fun and personal travel. And the problem is I like all types of flying, lol.

@@BlueSkyFlight Well that is a problem. May I suggest a Garrett 731 powered L-39... just kidding, not sure if you are turbine etc
@BlueSkyFlight
@BlueSkyFlight 10 ай бұрын
Oh yes... the L-39 has definitely been a consideration... also thought about buying and restoring a warbird of some kind... Leaning toward a kit build for the enjoyment (headache) of the build process. I know its a lot, and will take several years, but still looks like something that would be very rewarding in the end.

I would build an airplane with retractable gear like your Arrow, they’re more efficient, but I live in Europe with high gas prices. Lancair, or Velocity with a Delta Hawk engine have been my dream, but Velocity has some disadvantages when it comes to icing (I live in icing Sweden) and both need quite long runways. Metal airplane seems to have a longer lifetime, so a RV my be a good choice, but they have no retractable gear (but are quite efficient anyway). Delta Hawk diesel engines have been in business surprising long time so they may work. You seems to live in a warm climate so Velocity may be the airplane you need and can replace your Arrow completely and then reduce your cost. You can put in regular Continental and Lycoming as well and they can’t be so hard to build and I think you will love their efficiency in the long run (would be more interesting to see you building one also, they’re not so common). Since you’re very well experienced pilot, insurance cannot be so expensive? Nice channel!
@BlueSkyFlight
@BlueSkyFlight 10 ай бұрын
Thank you for all of that great feedback and information. The RV's are so aerodynamic and light, that the extra weight from retractable gear would probably negate the aerodynamic gain. Again, thanks for commenting and for watching!

Your next project could be stripping and painting the Arrow and/or a panel refresh if you'd so desire. My favorites in EAB circle are the Sling TSI and the Lancair ES which someone with your piloting experience would absolutely love. Excellent reviews from Sling builders. You did review some great options out there.
@BlueSkyFlight
@BlueSkyFlight 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for all of that. I have heard good stuff about the sling. I thought about paint and panel, but the money I would spend on that is close to the cost of the kit for the 8. I’d like to update the paint scheme, but hard to justify it because the paint is in really good shape overall. As for the panel, I wouldn’t mind that, but again just hard to justify the cost if I’m going to build something. Thanks for all of your thoughts on this!

Loved the restoration videos and this Oshkosh video. For AngelFlight, though, we can only fly certified aircraft, so best to have the Arrow and a sporty acrobatic RV.

BTW, asked a few times at the AngelFlight Town Halls to consider adding Experimentals, as I also have a Sling TSI High Wing on order and that is probably safer than my 40 year old Cessna.@@BlueSkyFlight

@@alexmikhael5061 Now you are talking upwards of $600K. It will be interesting to watch the prototype's progress. I've always wanted to see economical GA turbines, however on most airplanes, these TBS TP100's would be a bit weak, but the twin V they're OK.

Obviously you have to decide what your primary mission is... But my mission and flying desire leans directly at the RV-10. I like the idea of having a lift and haul capability, because you never know when you may have to Jam.

Yeah my problem is too many missions, lol. But yes I agree.. need to narrow that. I agree about the lift. I love the 10… but every now and then I want to go upside down, and it’s not built for that. That’s what led me to the 14, but then you lose the back seats… and round and round I go. Lol… thanks for the feedback

And have you ever built or assisted a build before? As I'm sure you know it's a huge project that will take years. Even with a quick build option and a simple build, most people will spend 3-4 years of all their free time building. I started an RV6 many years ago (before prepunching) and after two years of nothing but building any moment I could, I burnt out and sold it. I was tired of not having a life outside of the shop. I'm only mentioning because when you throw that Velocity into the mix, now you're talking a whole different commitment level and many years, unless you're having someone build it for you. I think you should also consider the RV7A. Smaller and sportier, potentially a quicker build. Only issue would be if you want to put two really big people into it. And on the RV8A, the person in the back will be a passenger and some people don't care for that. Very few are built with full rear seat controls.@@BlueSkyFlight I currently fly a Decathlon and am on the verge of buying an RV4 as a second faster sport plane. I know I don't want to spend the time building again.
@BlueSkyFlight
@BlueSkyFlight 10 ай бұрын
This would be my first build. Yes I know about the time it takes, but not in a hurry - kind of like the ultimate lego kit.. Having the arrow to feed the flying bug during the build will help I think. Thanks for all the info. I'm sure it can get old after a while. About half way through the Arrow renovation, I was kind of like "I want to fly my plane".. but like I said, at least I will have a working plane while I build. know its a big commitment for sure. The 7 is a nice airplane, I've looked at several. I think if I was going to build a 2 seat side-by-side, it would be the 14 for the extra room. If I build the 8, it would be mostly for me as a fun airplane, I know the rear seat wouldn't be much fun for x-country for the passenger. Decisions... decisions... lol
