This is simply compatibility madness. What's even crazier is that the worst pencil is the only one that works with the entire iPad lineup.

The Apple Pencil (Gen 2) not working with the M4 is wild 🐬

I’m still using my iPad Pro 9.7 (2016) daily and the 1st Gen pencil is what I need to use for drawing. It is priced at $140 USD where I live.

What’s not to understand about why someone would get a gen 1? They have an older iPad and they need a replacement. My 8th gen only supports that one.

What I still can’t understand is why Apple still limits its pencil just to iPads. Why not just allow it to be used on an enhanced trackpad, for tasks like Freeform drawing on the desktop. Or as a complete wacom tablet alternative for illustrators. Perhaps then there would be even more reason for us to consider upgrading to the Pencil Pro.

An apple pencil with pressure sentivity and usb c charging would make things so muhc easier

I have the iPad 9th generation with the 1st gen Apple Pencil so it’s a great device.

I own a 1 and 2, I draw very basically but use the Pencil daily for notes, pdf edits, photo edits, etc---I just want the 2 to work with my 12.9 Pro Ipads (USBc). I have a Mini 5 so occasionally use the 1 to take notes on the Mini. So---good reason not to buy the M4 Ipad Pro--I am mostly concerned with having a 12.9" and don't really need what the M4 offers, M1 still working great.

My thoughts is Apple should give a little back and even if making the iPad a little thicker the stylus should fit inside the iPad like the s pen on Samsung. Or even in the magic keyboard

Will the new Apple Pencil Pro have any functionality with the iPad mini 6? I know it’s not listed as compatible with it but will it work at all? Or attach to the side?

I'll probably buy the 10th gen ipad with the price drop now for art and i think the only one thats suits me is the 1st gen one and charging that seems like such a pain and inconvenience.

The first Apple Pencil is good for iPad Pros. The Gen 2 Pencil is good for newer iPads Pros. There was a shock when the first Pencil was replaced but people had calmed down when they found out that they could charge their pencil on their iPads. Then Apple opened up the Gen 1 Pencil to more iPads and the Gen2 for iPad Pros people were upset over the cost, Apple introduced a lower cost, basic Pencil which covered a multitude of iPads. Now, there's a new Pencil for a new series of iPads and history repeats itself. It is only good for users who want more choices and a limited amount of iPads because of the on devices charging and now this one has Find My on it so you won't misplace it. It is just an inflection point and next year, more iPads will be able to take the advantage.

I just bought the iPad Pro 13 M4 in space black with the black keyboard and Apple Pencil pro. I used my iPad Pro 5th generation 12.9 to reduce my cost of the new ipad. So I was wondering if I buy the iPad Air 13 M4 for my daughter would the iPad Pro Magic Keyboard fit that one as I know it won’t fit the new iPad Pro 13in 2024 just unsure if it would fit the iPad Air 13 M4 2024. I would like to give her my apple Magic Keyboard that I used for iPad Pro 12.9 I know the Apple Pencil 2nd generation won’t fit either the iPad Air or iPad Pro M4. It’s like you have to buy the newest things when the old ones are in perfect shape. Why doesn’t apple website allow you to buy the last iPad Pro or iPad Air once they put up there new line up?

To me, it doesn’t make sense that the Apple USB-C Apple Pencil supports hover on the iPad Pro 2. Why have hover feature that doesn’t have pressure support? Yes, I know it’s not for drawing, but still. I’m sticking with the 1st gen Apple Pencil as long as I can. It gets everything done.

I’m wondering how the Alternative Apple Pencil market will improve now that we have the Apple Pencil Pro.

So my Apple Pencil gen 1 won’t work with the new iPad Pro coming out?

I honestly believe apple did two critical mistakes that led to this mess: 1- removing Pressure sensitivity for USB-C Apple Pencil. 2- Naming the new pencil as "Apple Pencil Pro", when it should've been the 3rd Generation, which would've made sense (I'll explain further below). The Apple Pencil 1st gen is pretty easy to understand in terms of compatibility. If you're ipad is- - A pro model with rounded edges - The "iPad" that's from 2018, and later (including 10th gen) - iPad Air & Mini from 2019 and later which have rounded edges. Then this is the pencil you should go for. The 2nd gen ipad follows a similar pattern. If your iPad is: - Flat edged ipad Pro/Air (before 2024) - Other Flat edged ipads excluding the default "iPad" The USB-C Apple Pencil is like the first generation pencil, but with USB-C. It honestly should've been named "Apple Pencil for USB-C (iPads)", because that is what it is. It's compatible with every USB-C iPad, which can also be identified by their flat edges. The only downside (an arbitrary one tbh) is that it lacks pressure sensitivity. It does have "pencil hover" which I'll come to a bit later... The Pencil Pro is only compatible with the latest ipad Pros and Airs, and vice-versa. Thus, its fitting that it's called the 3rd generation apple pencil. (It follows precedent set in 2018, when 2nd gen apple pencil was released alongside 2018 ipad pros (11" 1st gen, and 12.9" 3rd gen). ) - Apple Pencil Hover is supported if your ipad has M2 chip. So, that's like the previous iPad pro(12.9" 6th gen, and 11" 4th gen) , and the newly released ones. All in all, a mess that could've easily been avoided by apple if they resisted cutting costs, and putting "pro" in everything. I mean, this isn't the only thing they messed up, the whole mac configs is a mess, your average joe will have FOMO, because the Macbook Airs were just updated 8 weeks ago with the M3 (And M4 already released). Atleast its getting better compared to last year, we're getting better base storage.

The fact that the pro pencil doesn’t work with the M1 Pro which came out in 2021 is a joke. Investors - ‘Tim our iPad sales have dropped we need people to buy more iPads!’ Tim- ‘Okay let’s make a new pro pencil which only the new lineup of iPads can use!’ Engineer - ‘But what about that magnetic strip, can’t they charge it on there? Tim - ‘Fk it, let’s move the camera so they can’t and will have to buy a new iPad’ RIP to all my m1 iPad Pro brethrens who only want it for procreate

the apple pencil dock should have moved to the smaller portrait side. so pencil 2 and pencil pro would run on the new ipad air, m2 ipad pro m4 AND on older ipads AND older pencils would function on the ne iPads. But Apple did the other way

What Apple should have done was trade in discount for new accessories. But Apple knows we will complain then give in and buy new accessories

Has anyone actually TESTED to see if 2nd gen doesn't work with the new iPads? The new air and the last pro models have the exact same chips, so it should still have full functionality except for charging (which can be fixed with a $14 dongle) Conversely the same should be true if you have an m2 pro model and you just want the new pencil. Either apple is lying or they really went out of their way to screw customers.

No it's not for me. To many gimics and way to expesive. At the end of the day it just an over hyped stylus. Theyre are other that exist that give you the same end result.
