Sir, your video gave me chills in my body and all of a sudden something clicked in my brain. It's the sound of a Lamp click. And now, I will explain what I am talking about. Your video taught me something very very important and made me view music and composition much differently. Music is a like a construction field with many tools to build a song. A song that was originally just a single note and constructed according to a construction plan. You slightly add notes, try notes, remove notes, .. etc until you create your melody. The next phase is to add, try, or remove the simplest triad chords to make sure they fits well with the melody according to your design of the time signature of the song. Next phase is to re-arrange your chords by using inversions or whatever in order to sound more coloured. Then bring in your song structure to indicate the number of verses, chorus, bridge, ..etc and model it on the given harmonization that we've just created. Voila !! You got your own song. Honestly, thank you very much.

Good tips! To make a long story short, look at the melodic note you’re playing on your right hand on the main beat or impulses in the melody and play the bass note that is 1, 3, or 5 intervals BELOW the melodic note. This rule is a bit easier to mentally execute as opposed to finding the triad chords that contain the melodic note. As for the chord progressions (asked in one of the viewer comments), there is no need to memorize the progressions because they naturally come about and arise from simply responding to whatever notes are played in the melody using the above rule. :-)

I found a very interesting reharmonization. Since there's no B in the melody (nor Bb) we can assume that the melody is actually in F major (or C mixolydian). But, since the melody starts on a G, which is the 2nd degree of F major, I found out it's not a very nice starting note, so I made a modulation: the harmony starts in A minor (which have the same notes of C major) but ends in F major with a bunch of secondary dominants in between. It ended being like this: | Am7 / Em7 / | Bm7(b5) / E7 / | Am7 / | D7 / | G7 C7 F / | It came out with a very interesting flavour

Chord tones and non chord tones are what we need to know about and of course the ear is a determining factor here and the ability to hear what is in the bass all the way to the top note in the melody line. However, there are other ways of harmonizing melodies that use other means rather than triads. As if the triad were the penultimate thing in music which is only part of the dilemma of what to use to harmonize a melody. You used a functional diatonic solution and of course there are solutions about what you want to use but where does it come from and where its going is dependent on certain rules of harmony and counterpoint. Counterpoint is not mentioned at all in most of the videos I have seen. So what would we do otherwise? What what we do otherwise. Peter

Thank you for this simple approach. I have asked 2 people this week for the simplest way to play the left hand. I want to learn some simple church choruses because I got frustrated and have put them aside. I've just been working on music with notes and nothing that is just chords. And it's not church music. I want to try the church choruses again. :)

Which bass notes are you playing to execute the 5-2-1? It bass notes that make the 5-2-1 at 7 minutes into the video weren’t clearly identified or was confusing. Were the first two bass notes played with the left hand pinky and the last one with the left hand thumb?

Thank you for these tips. Question. You used the 2-5-1 progression to play the 2 chord before the 5 chord and it worked. Also the 6-2-5 (part of the 6-2-5-1) progression worked. Are these the standard progressions to determine passing chords for all songs? For example if I wanted to find a chord that leads up to the 2 chord in a song will the 6 chord always work? And if so is there a chord that leads up to the 6 chord?

Thank you so much for not saying "There are no rules in music...I've learned all the rules and I break them so instead of going over the basics I'll start off by demonstrating super advanced harmony" like everyone else. This is the most condensing and unhelpful attitude imaginable. For years i've seen this BS passed about and its insane. How is anyone supposed to learn anything if everyone who can teach them something says "will I have attained atonal nu-harmony and I love it...So I will skip the basics".
