This video is about which essential oils to use for sleep.
There are a lot of essential oils good for sleep-many more than we could cover in this video. So I’m going to keep it simple, and share three essential oils that blend beautifully together in a diffuser blend that can help you sleep.
The essential oils are: Cedarwood, Lavender, and Neroli/Petitgrain.
Cedarwood is very soothing for its soft, woodsy aroma. All you have to do is smell the oil to know that it will be good for supporting sleep.
And Lavender is a classic essential oil for sleep! Its soft floral scent is very popular in blends for relaxation and rest.
Neroli/Petitgrain is what’s called a “co-distill.” It’s a blend of two different essential oils that actually come from the same plant-in this case, the oils come from the bitter orange tree. Neroli comes from the flowers of the bitter orange tree, and Petitgrain is distilled from the leaves. It’s a lovely combination because the floral Neroli blends with the warm herbaceous scent of the Petitgrain.
I’m blending these three essential oils into a 5 ml glass stock bottle, which means I’ll have the blend to use over and over again in my essential oil diffuser. In the video, I have a graduated cylinder to help me measure the essential oils, but you don’t need one. The drop counts are not too high.
The recipe is:
2 ml (50 drops) Cedarwood essential oil (Juniperus virginiana) (1:54)
2 ml (50 drops) Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) (2:33)
½ ml (13 drops) Neroli/Petitgrain co-distill essential oil (Citrus aurantium var. amara) (2:58)
Pour the blend into your 5 ml glass bottle, and now you have a “Sleepytime Stock Blend!” You can leave the little bottle by your essential oil diffuser and use it more than once. It’s very convenient!
Actually, you can use this blend in more ways than a diffuser. It’s great for a bedtime bath! You can mix 3-5 drops of it with ½ cup of whole milk. It sounds funny, but the essential oils dilute in the fat in the whole milk, and distribute evenly through the bath water. The milk protects skin, and makes for a soothing, nourishing bath.
At 4:57, you can see how to use this stock blend in an essential oil diffuser (if you’ve never used a diffuser before, this can be helpful!). The number of drops you use is really up to you, and depends on factors such as the size of your room, whether you have ventilation or open windows, how strong you want the aroma, and just what you like! I’m using 10 drops in my diffuser.
My diffuser will run until the water runs out, but it also has a timer I can set. There are lots of different kinds of diffusers you can use, so find the one that you like the best . . . and sleep well!
