Gimp isn’t just split windows like that, you can change it in the settings so it’s all one connected window.

I use krita, with a mouse, and it’s worked fantastically, helping me produce art that I’m really fond of. Maybe it’s the operating system that you use?

the mac version of krita is awful, the windows version is perfect

Fire Alpaca is my favourite program to use~ The best part about it is that is has an autosave function and it's usually already on by default, so if it ever happens to crash or your laptop dies or anything, you have a very good chance of being able to go back to where you left off without too much stress. I'm sure there's a chance that it has its faults and maybe it doesn't always work or something, but I haven't had a single issue with that just yet.

Krita does have lag issues, but if that is solved, krita is the best program I've ever used. Plus, krita had so many abilities, that it takes a strong computer for it to work.

I've been using FireAlpaca for years and I didn't even know you could do that with the paint bucket! I hate those white lines when you fill so this really helped me out!! :3

Krita is great, it's very complete(although not so intuitive to learn). But once you learn it's amazing. It's a open source program, so it had some issues, especially in the past, but the team that works on it is always improving and fixing these issues. The team also regularly post content explaining tools or presenting new features. It even have a recording and animation tool. I had some bugs with it in the past, but all of them are fixed now, at least in my experience. I don't know how it works on Mac tho

so I've used Krita on Mac and on Windows, and while I used it on mac when I was using a mouse it did seem to run poorly on the Mac from what I observed, and though my windows computer runs slower generally, it ran krita better than my mac did.

There is an option in GIMP to glue all the windows together like in photoshop! You just have to go in the top bar and Windows > Single-Window Mode

Hey can you do an "Drawing on a phone" video, using programs such as MediaBangpaint and IBSPaint.

Thank you so much for this, I went through a few different recommendation lists on free art apps as I'm trying to get back into drawing, and while Krita came highly recommended and worked on my machine, I had no clue where or what anything was. Your list was the first I found that actually went about showing actually using the apps and how easy or problematic they were. So I'm now a fan of FireAlpaca haha ^_^

for anyone who's going to get firealpaca after this video, the issue lavender had with no size preview can be solved by going into view and hitting brush size, 2 clicks and you have the lil' circle! happy painting!

I got a drawing tablet today and this helped so much! I’m just starting to do proper drawings on laptops and am not able to pay for a proper software and I was already thinking of using FireAlpaca, but this helped me properly decide! ^^

tbh i don't mind the fire alpaca ad at the start! its usually something art related anyway, and if it keeps the program free i see no problem at all

I love FireAlpaca. I've been using it for a while and wouldn't think of changing to a different program since this one is free and easy.

On gimp you have a few ways around the line. The easiest one I have found is selecting the area you want with the wand tool and then use the grow function for 1-2 pixels. Make a new layer under the line art and use the bucket fill there. Fill in any gaps with the pen.

A possible solution for your problem with Krita is changing the renderer. Try going to Settings -> Configure Krita -> Display and disable opengl, this did the trick for me when I decided to download it.

I remember when I downloaded Krita , I would to open a canvas, but it would just immediately crash every time. FireAlpaca is my go-to. It's wonderful.

I did use FireAlpaca for a little bit, but I switched back to Medibang because Medibang works the exact same, and has a dark interface. Medibang is what I use on my drawing tablet, and I use IbisPaint X on my phone. I actually got IbisPaint first, and so I was used to all the tools, and was surprised to find that the free drawing programs I tried didn't have all of them.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for making this video, it helped me discover FireAlpaca, which is the program I use now, and it really works well for me! 😁❤️As far as Krita goes, I have a friend with a Windows PC that makes really cute drawings using Krita, so I think the Mac version is the only one that is messed up.

Damn it's a shame that Krita didn't work on your Mac, I've got a PC and maybe it just works better on windows? Drawing and editing programs can be real fucky about which one they wanna work on. It's actually a REALLY good program.

I use krita on windows. On the mac it's not as good but I think it's better now that they've updated it. I think... Idk you'll have to try it yourself. Also I haven't seen this video in so long. Well it's only been like 2 years. I've watched it a couple of other times. But I never thought I would end up using one of these programs myself cause I never thought I was gonna try and pursue art in the future. Honestly you've inspired me and I've come a long way because of you. I'm happy I found your channel.

Well, GIMP is mainly an ''image manipulation program'' kinda like PS, while being its own thing. So digital painting is not their main focus, although you can. and the windows/tabs/tools are able to be as one.

I personally use PaintTool SAI *(COUGHCOUGHPIRATEDVERSIONCOUGHCOUGH)* But I sometimes use Krita ONLY to edit photos. Even then, Krita is definitely inferior, so I usually use Pixlr to edit photos. FireAlpaca I find is okay, but I guess I'm not used to FA's simplistic design and brushes.

I use medibang, it works wonders

Krita may be lagging because you are recording. This happens to me when I try to record lineart. Otherwise it works fine during the colouring process and when not recording. Such a shame you couldn't do an art piece. I was looking forward to that!

I just want to say, that in fire alpaca there is a choice to show the size of your brush

Thanks for making this video! I just got a basic drawing tablet to learn on and it took me hours to attempt to figure anything out in gimp and it just looked terrible when I was starting to finally figure it out. I downloaded FireAlpaca because of your review, plugged in my tablet and it was ready to go. I just doodled a little to get the feel and it was a million times better, registered my pressure pretty well and my lines were way smoother without any real lags. I have only ever drawn on paper and I was getting very discouraged that maybe this was just something I was too tech dumb to do, but it turns out Gimp is just not the best program for someone who knows nothing about digital art.

for firealpaca, the eraser thing you talked about was fixed, it now has a circle and its waaayyy better. knocked off the cons list :)

Problems in krita are from CPU usage. That program eats SO MUTCH memory. Progam itself is so nice but u can't rly paint in high resolutions and in option set your memory use to max. That means that u can't use any other programs in same time bcs they just kills it. Or you need a monster computer that will handle them all.

Medibang is actually pretty good too! My friend uses it a lot and she makes some pretty great art with it! It's free and easy to use/download.

I actually use fire alpaca and you can see and change how much you use the eraser easily and also if you can't tell what the settings are on the side hit tools at the top

I've been using Fire alpaca for over 3 years now and I must say that it is the best program I've ever used. It has all the important features and is very simple. A week ago I tried getting into Krita as I was intrigued by the huge brush selection that FireAlpaca didn't have. I had my friend explain how to use Krita and after sketching something I begun working on the lineart. The first problem I noticed was the stabilizer. I messed around in it for more than 20 minutes so that the lines were smooth just a little bit. After a while I began really missing the little navigator FireAlpaca had. The last thing that threw me off was how hard it was to make lineart smooth and how hard it was to literally do something simple as drawing and connecting lines. I must say that if you're not open to change just stick with whatever program. I might try Krita someday in the future.

I use Fire Alpaca all the time, and when you change the eraser and pen size, it should show up in the area where it shows the pen preview, the size changes and so does the dot next to it! Hopefully this helps a bit!

If you are the type of person who really uses effects and things in your drawings... Gimp is the best for that and since I animate... Firealpaca is the best for animation.

Oh geez, this is an old video but i had to comment I think you said somewhere on firealpaca that a downside is that it doesnt show the size of the brush, like a little circle thing, but theres actually an option to enable that in the "View" section just called "Brush size".

3:29, when I get white lines, on the layer where I got the white lines, let's say I drew a skirt, I select the outside of the skirt and make a new layer, draw over the selection in a new layer and put the new layer underneath the skirt so it looks like there are no white lines and merge.

I've been using krita for years before moving to cs paint and its interesting to see how it worked on your computer because it worked really well on mine and it was one of my favourite programs to draw with.

There is an option on firealpaca that you can turn on a cirle size sample thing on your brush.

Your Wacom drivers are probably out of date. When I first used krita, I got the same results but when I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers from the Wacom website, it worked.

About not being able to see the brush size in Firealpaca, if you go into the top bar that says view, you can select "brush size" so you can see the circle while you're drawing.

This video (along with some others) convinced me to get FireAlpaca! It's awesome especially because I don't need a tablet to use it
