As a n industrial chemist for sometime working as a formulator and tester for an industrial coatings and adhesive manufacturer I would like to make a small point. An adhesive that can be used in a water submerged environment is generally classed as a waterproof glue, those glues that are not design for being submerged but will be able to be used in a wet environment outside should be classed as water resistant glues. Some manufacturers sometimes spin their adhesives as being waterproof but are in effect water resistant. I use to formulate and operate with adhesives that were for seawater and other liquids more aggressive that water (solvents, acids etc.) so be a little careful about manufacturer's claims and if you can obtain a data sheet on which the manufacturer is legally obliged to show the operational characteristics of there product and how exactly they can be used these characteristics are backed up with test data if it is from a reputable and responsible manufacturer. Regards

@@dougsaunders8109 Excellent alternative to Titebond III. Personally I wouldn't trust any adhesive to be waterproof other than epoxy, I do use Cascamite on exterior projects and it's a forgotten hero, much beloved still in dome shops. Word of caution on Everbuild D4, when you buy it check the date of manufacture on the top of the bottle. Small black stamp. It only has a shelf life of six months.

PU's advantage is that it is waterproof. It is also good for gluing disparate materials, such as metal to wood. Since Titebond III has come out, I use it rather than PU glue. It's much less mess. For disparate materials, I use epoxy or hot melt glue. PU has a reputation for being gap filling. However, it really isn't. Yes, the glue foams and the foam will fill small gaps. But, the foam does not have much strength. So, while the gap may have been filled, the joint won't have much strength. That's NOT what we mean by gap filling. Epoxy is probably the best choice for gap filling.

Yes I agree with all that. Things change for those of us with unheated workshops when the weather turns colder. PVA and particularly Titebond need a bit of warmth, but PU doesn't mind the winter, so can be handy.

Back when I was manufacturing as opposed teaching I tried lots of the PU glues but found the one from Adkwik (Timbond) the best. I liked the one in the tube and applied using the frame gun, it didn't overly expand out and dried to a harder finish. Always went for the 5 minute one because every job was wanted yesterday, not sure I could have kept up to the same production run 30 years ago with the limited adhesives available then.

Hello from Greece. Huge fan here! I am not a carpenter,but more like a jack of all trades. Anyway, something i would like to mention. Polyethylene glue has one more BIG advantage IMHO. It's not orientation -based. And its strength is barely changing , regardless if you use it against or with the grains. I saw it on an other KZfaqr ,whom i can't recall,to pay him the respects, but i have tested myself also .

I'm so glad to hear you say PVA wood glue brands don't matter so much, I'm fed up with people pledging allegiance to Titebond, I've used the cheapo Everbuild stuff forever and it's always stronger than the wood indoors or out. The Lumberjack PU glue is fantastic for the right applications (gapy and not seen / construction) but Gorilla Glue's marketing has given people weird ideas that it can be used for anything. I picked up a second hand fridge freezer the other day and the previous owner used it to glue a drawer front back on 🤔 (obviously it had failed again).

Timely video Peter, I have used all the glues in your video. Titebond III has one advantage for me the bottle it comes in is great for application! The Everbuild D4 PVA is another good choice to the Polyvine. Polyvine also make some really nice to use water based varnish Last night I was in my empire of dust removing hide glue from a cabinet which I broke, 😐, with an old steam iron and a scraper. Interesting and somewhat sticky experience. Think hot glue but with steam!

Retailer refused to exchange them, I complained to everbuild about it but never heard back. 🤷‍♂️👍

I always used Evostik waterproof pva, actually still do, but tried Titebond because of KZfaqrs from the US. It has no advantage I could see, but disadvantage was it dries a orange brown colour. This is made worse when you wipe it with a damp cloth, as it spreads a film of glue you don’t see until dried. PVA dries clear as we know so I stick with that. I used Gorilla once because it expands which I wanted for a loose joint that couldn’t be taken apart. It worked well but what was left in the bottle, which was most of it went off in the bottle. So not be using that either. Cheers, thanks for your videos.

Great video Peter. My own experience with the PU adhesive is that despite the manufacturer (in my case "Gorilla") recommending that the mating surface is moistened slightly due to the glue curing due to the presence of moisture, it really isn't necessary. Unless you are using it in the middle of the desert in high sun, there is enough moisture in the wood and surrounding air to cure the glue perfectly well. I've found that adding moisture just causes excessive foaming, increases setting time to solid state and produces a weaker final bond. Using the glue alone works better in my opinion and sets harder. This is noticeable when trimming off cured adhesive that has foamed out of the joint with a chisel. Much tougher and harder than when moistening the mating surface has been done. Also one needs to be restrained when applying this glue. Less is more in my experience unless you want a foam monster to clean up afterwards. Also the foaming effect is quite powerful and will push components apart as the glue expands during curing, so restraint (clamps or screws etc) are essential. Not a massive fan of this glue in the main but does have benefits in certain situations.

I used polyurethane to glue carbon rods into channels routed into a guitar neck blank. I got a surprise when the glue foamed up, expanded, and pushed out the rods. It was a tight friction fit, but I had to scramble to put on clamps to push the rods back in before the glue set up. I did hear that if PU is allowed to foam, it loses all strength. I suppose it would be like sticking your furniture together with insulation foam, you don't expect that stuff to be structural.
@bjarneh-im1uw
@bjarneh-im1uw 10 ай бұрын
The expansion of PU glue is the result of reaktion with moisture in the materials. If you need it to expand a lot to fill a gap then damp the surfaces before gluing.

@@bjarneh-im1uw filling a gap with expanding foam won't add any strength to a joint. You're better off shimming it with a wedge or something structural; or using epoxy which can fill gaps at full strength.

For PVA I use either Titebond or Gorilla's PVA. I'm probably throwing money at the brand names, but I know I can send off a guitar and know it'll hold. Titebond tends to dry browner, Gorilla's PVA clear or black. So I'll gauge which depending on the wood species to minimise visibility. I'm 100% sure cheaper glues will work, I just can't bring myself to do it!

Just do a few dimple tests. Assuming your joinery is sound most glues will be way stronger than the wood. Your project your call but you have just been skewered by the advertising hype.
