Hello, bladers!
Today I will be testing out if 4x90mm Powerslide Ego Sl machined prototype frame is faster or slower than the Powerslide Elite 3x110mm frame.
Both frames are running Wicked ILQ9 classic bearings.
4x90: Rollerblade Hyodrogen 90mm wheels 85A.
3x110: Powerslide Spinner 110mm wheels 88A.
Mounted on the Powerslide Next Arctic Grey skates.
Let me know if you have other comparisons in mind :) Thank you, Finger Nagel, for the idea for this video!
It is one of our longest videos, therefore the timeline:

You delivered as promised and you didnt disapoint at all. Great job, thank you. My decision to replace the 3x110 with a 4x90 setup got much easier after that. Of course the differences are minor but the slightly better roll with four wheels on the ground comes with the 20mm lower stand which is impressiv. In addition to that i guess you could expect less wear of wheel substance and therefore less wheel rotation is needed. Now if you think about it that an average fitness skater already used 90mm setups before Powerslide created the Triskate trend with promises like better roll, speed and less effort the whole marketing shines through and gets exposed in a way. Of course that doesnt count for the evolution of speed skate setups to 3x125mm. And keep in mind the Triskate trend led to much higher prices for a pair of skates. Crazy. To me the big advantage is the Trinity system because 90mm setups on the 165mm mounting were much higher, for example the Powerslide Imperial Cruiser 4x90mm black/yellow. Hope the video gets a lot of attention.

Hi, thanks, bro! On the rough ground, they will work better and they will keep speed better on longer rides for sure. Do not take this vid too seriously :) people skate on all sorts of setups and the important part is to go and skate whatever the setup. Nothing is wrong with the 3x110 :)

I like 4x90 on a 273 frame too for urban - I use a US size 8 skate for 25 mondo feet (small feet). It’s a big change from 4x80, as you say mainly due to the longer frame length. I’ve also been skating 3x125 for nearly a year and have only recently improved on my 4x90 speeds, but there is certainly more to come on the 125s as you get stronger and technique improves. Felix R recently did his hour record and achieved 39.93km on 4x110. He commented that on 3x125 he would have gone 1.5km further in an hour (and he should know). So for me that settles the question of which setup is objectively faster in ideal arena conditions (3x125), but there are many situations where a 4x setup would be faster and they are preferred (over 3x) for some road races.
@VandKoala
@VandKoala 3 жыл бұрын
I think every setup has its use :) I tried going over many videos/photos of speed skating competitions and I only saw 3 wheel setups being used in marathons. Everything else, even 10k races are dominated by the 4 wheel setups (at least in 2019). I am no speed skater by any means. I am into urban setup and I think that 4x80 is great for small feet, 4x90 for bigger (or maybe even 4x80, but on a 273mm frame). All the 3x110 and 3x125 are better for recreational or looooong distance skating :)

I think is that you are used to the smaller wheels and that is why your stride is slower with the big wheels, it was noticed in the video. You have to skate more on the big wheels so that you have the same speed in your stride and your longest travel on the big wheels.
@VandKoala
@VandKoala 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe it is so. By today I have been out on both setups for many days to try them out (110 replaced with hydrogen wheels as well) and I do not see any benefits of the short frame with the tall wheels :) Balance is harder on tricks, riding down the stairs is sketchy, doing stalls in the skatepark is weird as there is no gap in the middle, speed benefit is not noticeable and short frame is not great at bigger speeds either, there is less grip to the surface, landing gaps is both harder due to being taller and "bumpier" due to the weight distribution... I guess I will not fall in love with the 3 wheel setups :D

I agree. I have enjoyed the trinity 4 x 90 frame since about April. I prefer it over the 3 x 110 243 mm frame. However, you should try the 255 mm 3 x 125 frame with 110 mm wheels. You gain additional stability and a stronger push. I still prefer the 4 x 90 but the 255 mm frame with 110 mm wheels is excellent for an alternative cruise!

Bala Hormiga thanks mate, one day I will give it a go. Now I am more up for trying 4x80 on the 273mm frame. I have developed a wrong stride on my left leg and it results in the muscle pain at my inner knee side. I am working on correcting it and I can tell that smaller wheels give a lot of stability :) When I will fix the issue I might try the 125 frame. Thanks for the idea!

There is a lot of bro science going on here. The bearings, the wheels and most importantly the wind will make quite a difference. A fairer comparison would be to use the exact same wheels on the 3x frame for example, or at least to use the same brand, exact same bearing, both unused, lubrication alsl will make a huge difference for the rolling test.

I prefer a lack of stability - skating 4 X 90 feels like rails. A(230mm) short 110 is way more reactive. Takes more to get going on 110s IMO though. Top speed when rolling goes to the 110s ( I skate with two FRs 3x110 and 4x90)

Thank you for the video. I have big size 47-48 size skates. I have 3x110mm frames with 255mm spacing (Kizer Trimax) they roll is very nice but the hard carves can be twitchy at times. They are also less stable for jumping than a lower frame. Some 3x110mm frames have longer spacing. The problem with short frames for me is the position of the back wheel is forward of my heel pivot point. Websites never show the skate with larger size boot, always size 41. For many people they will feel more stable if the back wheel pivot point is at the back of the heel or further back. I also have antother skate with 4x80mm 275mm which is long and very stable but not too long to turn fast. Many 4x80mm frames are 243mm which is short for size 47. I hope to try the 4x90mm setup. Thanks again.

In my case, for 80mm, hydrogen wheels made a pretty big difference in terms of speed and rolling ability comparing to my 88A wheels (not sure what exactly they were, could be spinners). Now I am also rolling on 110mm hydrogen wheels mounted on my HC evo's and they are very fast! I don't have a 4x90mm setup to compare them with though :)

I have a set of 110 hydrogens as well. They are as good as the 90 (I just keep cracking their axles when doing jumps, so they are not that great for more aggressive freeskate 🙄). 80 and 110 have the same frame lenght, I should be comparing 90 to 125, but to be honest I am considering to get some 80 wheels and just put them on the 273mm frame. For my style of riding anything above 90 are too large :)

Thanks a lot for the video and test. But I think it was slightly unfair for the three wheels. You used: better frame (machined - vs. casted aluminium), better wheels (hydrogen vs. something basic) longer wheel base which is better for speed. And what bearings was used?
@VandKoala
@VandKoala 4 жыл бұрын
Hi mate. Common, it is not a scientific experiment of course :) Even if the 3 wheel setup was a bit faster I would still prefer the 4 wheels as I like the gap between the wheels in the middle for stalls on coping/curbs. And with my EU44 foot, I love a bit longer base. Both bearings were the same. Either abec 9 or wicked ilq 9 classic, can't remember now. But the same manufacturer for both sets. Hydrogen wheels were 84A VS powerslide 88A, they should have been slower as they are way softer. It also feels on slides/grip a lot. I can't comment on machined vs casted frames - I have no idea how much difference would I feel as a (below?) average skater :)
@EneRec
@EneRec 3 жыл бұрын
I have both setups with hydrogen wheels and same twincam 9. I got better results with my 3 wheel setup. I think it's because I'm more used to 3x110, and as I saw in the video your stride is way different in 3x110 than 4x90. Maybe it's that. I hope this video won't change your mind, because it depends on your preference of wheel size
@VandKoala
@VandKoala 3 жыл бұрын
Most definitely it is the frame length. If we would compare 243mm frames the 4x80 would be slower on longer distances. For my 44 eu they seem too short frames. I have purchased hydrogen 110mm wheels and now they are sitting on the shelve with the 110 frames after couple of sessions - not my cup of tea :) I prefer 4 wheels as there is a gap in the middle for stalls, they provide better grip with 4 points of contact, they can be rockered in a more stable setup than 3, they absorb impact better when landing drops and jumps, they are less likely to catch a stair when you ride down and they provide overall lower centre of gravity that is beneficial for doing tricks. 110s are probably faster for long range “fitness” type sessions that I do not do that many :)

If the frame is 275mm - it is a “90” frame, 80mm frames are normally 243mm 🙄 Nexts are very, VERY narrow boots. Be sure they fit you before you order them. @@VandKoala sure that. When I bought my Flux the 4x90 was not out and actually I use it in a 3x100 setup for fitness skating (did use, but now I have a long speedframe with 3x125, different storry) The rockering is pretty fun though. That whole soul on the flux is a joke. Gives people the bad idea. I'm thinking to grind it of mine :)

@@udihu I thing they are great frames. And the world needs more 4x90 frames. I find natural rocker working for me well now, I change wheels 1-1 2-2 3-3 4-4 so natural "banana" develops. I also have OYSI frames on my aggressive setup and these rocker with different wheels. I tried 70/60 setup that gives like 2mm I think, and I found it a bit sketchy on landings :) But I will keep experimenting. There are interesting 80mm wheels that I will try to mount on my 90 frame and see how they work on slides :)

@@VandKoala Check out the new Powerslide NEXT 90 Black White... It was released today and it has the newest 4x90 Trinity Elite frame, similar to the style of your 3x110 frame. Very excited! I own the Next 90 Burgandy Grey with the Kizer Flux frame, but I just switched to a 3x90 Trinity Pro frame and I am enjoying it a lot, since I'm a beginner so speed is still not my best friend. I can imagine that with 47 boot you need longer frame, than let's say someone with 38 :)) And you might be right about 3/4 wheels. When my first and the last wheel wear on 3-wheel skates, the pivot point is in the middle on the one wheel. On 4 wheel frames it is more on the 3rd wheel. I like it more as well!

Nice Video bc it makes things clear when it comes to the Triskate trend which is a bit overhyped. But i was really surprised when you showed the the weight of both setups. How could that be possible? Even powerslide says in the specs of the new Next Black and White 4x90 a weight of 1850g compared to a Next 3x110 of 1750g, both in size 42. Of course all the weight of the boots is similar. Your 4x90 frame weights 109g less than the 3x110 setup although a 3x110 setup should be lighter according to the Powerslide marketing bc of one less wheel and two less bearings. That is really confusing. The Prototyp 4x90 frames you have must be really light.

Scham Haar I do not know about the weight mate, probably different weight of the frames 🙄 powerslide shows theory, my scales - reality :D (hopefully) :) I think tri-skates are hyped, I am not sure if “overhyped”. Privet Pavel! I do not know any Felt skates. Do you have a link to the product or at least a picture? Normally, there is either UFS mount or 165mm mount of the frames. Some of the frames you can look up here: www.der-rollenshop.de/165mm-Mounting_1 But I would argue to upgrade the boots as well to some of the more known brands if you can.

Which set u think is faster for the same boot...... A 3*110 set Or a 3*125 set, with a 100 grams heavier frame?
@VandKoala
@VandKoala 2 жыл бұрын
It solely depends on the question “faster for what?”. Marathon - probably 3x125. Sprint - 3x110. I tried 3x125, did not dig them. Rolling downhill - great fun, accelerating and going uphill a lot of work to make those wheels spin. Consider road quality - 125will roll better on rough bad quality asphalt.

That is why the transmission of a car exists. If you don't have the drive to get the wheels rolling, of course you're not going to take advantage of having more speed! On the other hand, with small wheels, no matter how much momentum you have, you won't be able to have high speed. It's easy, do the same test but with 60mm wheels and tell me if they are faster than 90mm wheels.
@VandKoala
@VandKoala 3 жыл бұрын
I wanted to reply a long comment, but I won't. I will just say that on a sprint I will win with 60mm wheels vs the 110 as big wheels demand a lot of energy to accelerate. For my riding conditions and purposes, and hill sizes, and quality of the roads 4x90 are faster and work better :)

@VandKoala
@VandKoala 4 жыл бұрын
Skatafossy well, probably it has to do something with compound, frame lenght, ammount of wheels and mass distribution per wheel. Also it should take you longer/more effort to accelerate with them. But all of this is just believes. Not facts. The only real fact here is that mine 4x90 setup is faster and works better for me personally than mine 3x110 setup in my personal conditions.
@Skatafossy
@Skatafossy 4 жыл бұрын
@@VandKoala I respect your opinion .... but bigger wheels are faster: it's physical law unbelief, that's why speed skaters use 3x125 or 4x110. do not you think...??? You can't be sure you've always pushed the same way I think
@VandKoala
@VandKoala 4 жыл бұрын
@@Skatafossy I am not trying to prove that bigger wheels are slower than the small ones. I am trying to prove that for my personal riding style and conditions 4x90 mm frame is not slower than the 3x110 one. Moreover, it also has a better grip, handles stairs better, turns smoother, lands from jumps smoother, therefore, I prefer 4x90 vs 3x110 :) I assume it is faster because of the much longer frame, thus, longer-stronger stride, not because of the size of the wheels. So yes, probably I pushed with the longer frame much stronger. Now for the sake of discussion: First of all speed skaters and me noobing around the town is not a comparable thing. Think about this: I take a small, underpowered car. Some VW Polo with 0.9 engine. And install 42" wheels on it, instead of the original 13" ones. They should be much faster uh? Will the car go faster? Uphill? Against the wind? :) Bigger wheels on inline skates are only faster because of their ability to roll over small bumps (rough surfaces). They will also take more effort on climbs, acceleration, against the wind etc, as they do have a bigger mass that you need to rotate. Talking about physical laws there is one called Newton's second law :)
