The P.O. is the higher end watch and much classier! I feel like the P.O. is their flagship diver and the 300M is their entry level diver. I also much prefer the P.O. hence why that’s the watch on my wrist as I type this. The 45.5 chrono version with the liquid metal and their new movement which keeps absolutely amazing time as well it should. The 300M is a nice watch but the P.O. is just nicer in every way to me. Now that they both have the exact same movement precision is not really an issue, not that it ever was. The way I see it, it’s down to aesthetics at this point. I’m personally torn between the chronograph versions of these 2 watches (August 2019 release for the 300m) and this video hasn’t helped me make up my mind one bit.

PO is a nice watch, though it is humungous. I agree the 300m with it's 2 toned bracelet, and waved pattern dial is a bit more flashy. But I think for most people, the 300m is a much more realistic every day wear, which is why i went with the black variant on bracelet. 13.6mm vs the one you're wearing at 18mm in thickness is just very chunky. I think the planet ocean in the video is 16.3mm, which is still much more substantial than the 300m. Personally for a chronograph, I went with the Speedmaster racing. I have no plans to take my chrono to 600m, or even 10m, so i went with the Speedmaster for it's thinner profile. Omega makes fantastic watches, and no matter your opinion on them, there is one for you!

@@erikkalifornia5182 I wish we could post pics in the comment section I’d love to see your watches! I also completely agree Omega makes a watch for everyone. I just happen to like big watches and if it sits proud that is just icing on the cake for me, but I can also see how that might not be for everyone and the slimmer watches might be better for every day wear. May your Omegas bring you years of happiness.

Great review & comparison! I don't think these two really will end up competing or cannibalizing eachother's sales though. It's like Rolex selling both the Sub & the Sea Dweller ranges, while the "lesser" watch may actually present a better value proposition, some people just want a watch that they know is the most expensive (similar to cars with the Mercedes 63 AMGs vs the 65 AMGs) or just more capable even if neither of these watches get taken to their maximum depth range. And there are those little details that set the PO apart, like the white gold incedes & hands, liquid metal bezel, more metal in general (including on precious metal options). It'd be interesting to see what Omega does though when they update the Planet Ocean so they can widen the gap between the two.

Well, OMEGA has started the war against competitors. Super high quality ‘certified’ merged with history in a well studied prices. So, let’s talk about the difference between new Diver 300 and Planet Ocean. In my humble opinion, the main difference is the taste of each design. Diver 300 mainly for people who love OMEGA and the iconic design of James Bond Watch. The Planet Ocean is for mature people who probably older in age but have higher experience and really want to take their watches to every activity they do. It’s like supporting Brazil or Germany in the World Cup. This might sound silly but let’s wait and see where OMEGA will take the New Planet Ocean to. Many thanks and happy New Year 2019

The Planet Ocean's bezel is not just ceramic. It is also Liquid Metal which is superior to the enamel-filled ceramic on the 300. I am not sure that's worth $2k, but it is a significant difference.

I own the 8900 planet ocean and love it. It is chunky and looks solid and of very high quality. My wrists are fairly average in size and it looks great. I think the 300m would be too small for many, unless you have small wrists or want a smaller watch. The 300m also looks more like a sports watch where as the PO looks more classy in my opinion. I also like the sapphire case back which I don’t think the 300m has? Both watches are decent and of good quality, but the PO wins hands down for me.

Happy New Year & great review! one correction, the previous iteration of the 300m has screw in links as well. One dissapointment with the new 300m is that Omega actually makes a adjustable clasp that is much more compact than the one on the new 300m that I purchased for the previous iteration that's much nicer.

Happy New Year. Agreed the 300m is such a high Tec quality and versatile sport/dress piece. It boosts just amazingly visibility to the indices and hands - making it one of the easiest dials to read in the field you can find anywhere-. if you like the dial design - it just can't be beat for anywhere near the price. Planet Ocean is gorgeous also- but some loss of dress versatility. I Love both. Thx again.

I was thinking about the PO before getting the Seamaster 300 until I saw them both in person. The Seamaster has a more appealing look. I didn’t think I would like the wave dial but I fell in love with it. All the divers on the market look the same, black dial, different hands but no distinction between them. The wave dial pops and the way it plays with the light... just stunning. As the Rolex vs Omega. Sure you aren’t getting the name but the omega is a far superior movement with newer features. Also good luck finding a Stainless steel submariner! The corporate approach to control the market turned me off.

Yeah agree, but I don't agree with the whole omega vs rolex conversation most of the time. I prefer the Omega's generally because they don't draw as much attention, and you get a more mechanically refined movement in your watch. That being said, my 2020 submariner has the more superior movement I think. That wasn't true with the previous sub. The new one has 70 hours power reserve, and runs a bit more accurate than my SMP. They also manage to do it in a watch with a slimmer profile. Overall you're right. The Sub is probably not worth the premium for most people.

I tried on both about 3 months ago. Whilst the planet ocean has a more brutish tool like bracelet that I like, I would go with the 300m as it is thinner and will fit under shirt sleeves far better. 300m is lighter as well. I have an 8’’ wrist and found both to be very comfortable.

You actually said it perfectly you cannot slide the planet ocean onto your cuff. Typically, I’ll wear the Seamaster 300 to church or to meetings because I wear a long sleeve shirt and I suit jacket, but I typically wear my planet ocean during the week and/or when I’m out and about because I’m usually wearing short sleeve shirts. I love both the swatches I think they’re amazing I actually sold my Rolex submariner because I didn’t keep as good a time as I wanted it to and I was able to buy both of the watches for less than the submariner that I sold. I really do believe the Omega is a superior watch to the Rolex at this point. The movements are in my opinion for what you pay the best movements on the planet.

Back in 2008, I had the exact same decision to make. Actually went for a 300m,but came you with a PO 42mm. I had the PO for 2 years before flipping due to a house purchase. It was a great watch which fitted under a shirt cuff no problems. Back then I think the PO looked smarter, but not sure in 2018. Black 300m is very smart. On the PO, my crown got a slight debt and I don't like the HE valve on either. The PO I had the seahorse embossed back, which on a hot day rubbed my wrist bone and irritated skin. Display case back today should be fine. I occasionally look at photos of my old PO and want another. Then I see and Aqua Terra and realise that's the best choice for where I am in life now.

Planet Ocean by a mile. Better movement, better bezel, liquidmetal marks are technologically cool and more elegant comparing to contrasting enamel marks of SMP300, even omega logo and dial printing are more refined. Outstanding style connecting classic seamaster and modern high class dive watch. As a proud owner of both these wonderful watches the PO with orange bezel chrono & the Seamaster in blue dial. I can tell you first hand the PO gets easily 5x's more compliments than does the Seamaster. However, I adore both co-equally. Lastly, my first Seamaster was a 99' blue with the previous wave dial. The newer wave design has much more pop to it. The 99' marketed as the 007 was much more understated.

The Diver 300m (previous version) is my dress watch. I wear it to work with a button-down shirt and tie. The next Planet Ocean should be more of a true tool watch. Omega should offer a version with a dull matte finish or black coating, rubberized bezel, 1200m water resistance, extra shock-proofing--something to compete with the IWC Aqua Timer and the Rolex Sea Dweller. Then there would be no problem with it being big and thick.

The Bracelet versions of Omegas have been about $100 more for quite a few years now...AND you can purchase one later, although more expensive. Tudor bracelets about 800-1000 more...and can't seem to buy a complete bracelet from Tudor no matter what the price. Omega IS COMPETING quite well. Planet Ocean will not be discontinued. If you look at the sizes, they are staggered between 300M and PO. Designs are distinctly different. Your value assessments are incorrect. PO has retained value as well as ANY 300M. Many people are still purchasing the glossy lacquered dial 300M as they find the "laser wavy" garish. So the PO becomes more viable as it has the smooth dial.

@@jeremiahpayne2084 I find it super convenient when traveling between time zones. If I get on a plane in Boston and land in Montana, I only need to pop the crown and twist it counterclockwise about a half turn for it to set the time back two hours. Much better than adjusting the minute hand to advance the hour (and losing your time accuracy in the process). That said, yes. It is more time-consuming to set the date if you routinely let the movement stop. I primarily use my Omega PO as my daily driver, so it's not a huge concern for me. If I rotated through my watches more, perhaps I'd get more frustrated. My Panerai has the same feature and gets less wrist time, but setting the date with the hour hand hasn't really bothered me so far...

I have a 7 1/4 inch wrist, and find it quite easy for the 43.5 mm Planet Ocean to fit under a dress shirt cuff. Some shirt cuffs are tighter from the manufacturer, but an alteration shop can easily and cheaply move the button placement slightly to help accommodate the size. Really it comes down which watch you like more, and if a taller or thinner watch is your preference. The thicker watch will have more wrist presence, and in my view maintain a bit more of the classic charm of the 1960s Omega divers and despite its size, it maintains a more elegantly understated design language. The bezel of the Planet Ocean is also slightly more dressy due to the shiny liquid metal ceramic material.

isnt the bezel on the po smoother than smp 300 because of the liquid metal technology?
@benvazquez2159

Both bezels are ceramic and operate using the same mechanism. Liquid metal on the PO is used to fill in the numbers on the metal, on the SMP its enamel. Both are long lasting and scratch resitant.

The Seamaster 300m was my dream watch. God gave me the opportunity to buy it, I am a grateful guy. It is fantastic, I got it in blue.dial with the bracelet. Then I bought the new rubber folding clasp strap!! I also prefer the 300m vs the Planet Ocean due to its size and price!!

PO yes 2x water resistance, movement has forward and backward hours, more power reserve from 2 barrels, and has a totally different feel when wearing. Silly they are both in the Omega lineup? Edit: I retract my somewhat snarky comment about subscription, but I still respectfully disagree: in my opinion, the PO and SMP300M are 2 very different watches and both deserve to be in the Omega lineup.

Yeah, two very different watches to be sure. The thickness of the PO turned me off immediately. I'm used to the 12.5mm of my submariner, and even the 13.6mm of my SMP. Once a watch gets to be 16+mm in thickness, it's unwearable for me. Luckily, omega makes a watch perfect for everyone's personal taste.

Not sure where you’re getting your info from, but the 300 (‘93) is a much older design than the PO (‘05). I have both of these watches in regular and chronographs, and love them all, but the POs are in a different league; that’s why they’re more expensive. Everything from the bezels, the applied Omega logos (rather than painted on the 300s), and twice the water resistance, put my POs out in front of my 300s. I recommend the 300s for people just getting into watches or maybe buying their first nice watch even. The more experienced watch guys will notice all the little, and big, things that make the PO Omega’s premier dive watch offering. You’re definitely getting what you pay for with the POs. Also, my new 2020 PO absolutely SMOKES my old one that I purchased in ‘09. Same with the new vs. old 300s, but even new 300s aren’t in the PO’s league. 300s are better than Tudor BBs, but POs are taking a serious run at Rolex Subs.

The Planet Ocean will be updated soon, I quess. Omega will step up their game on the Planet Ocean because they need to be ahead of the competition. Tudor and the Rolex Sea Dweller for instance. Not talking about the Rolex Deep Sea because that is a complete other level but the 1200m depth rating of the Sea Dweller will be a good reverence point for the Planet Ocean series. Another positive point for the Planet Ocean is the case size. I prefer 43mm or 44mm watches so the 300m diver will probably too small for a lot of people.

Aspect most people glance over e.g. the shape of hte index's on the face. Are they all dots? are they rectangles? Are the arms solid or "see-through/skeleton arms"? IMHO we should want "rectangular " shaped index's for easy/quick recgonition in day or night. For this reason I'd go with the Planet Ocean over the 300M Pro... Water resistence ratings---helps sell watches...and companies are always one-upping each other Why there are so many depth /wagter resistence ratgings. Most owners/wearers don't dive :)) And having "good LUM" is imporant...here i think tag's are the best....you don't want to struggle or sped more time than needed to glance the time....

I had the planter ocean 43.5 blue with blue strap. It was a really nice watch. I wound up selling it and once this seamaster came out I waited for the blue on bracelet. It’s such a nice watch. I don’t see a point in the planet ocean anymore. If you hold side by side and look at the price difference. There is nothing that says the planet ocean should cost that much more

you are wrong on the age of the watches, the seamaster 300 has been around since at least the mid to late 90s and its been tweaked like the rolex sub over time , the planet ocean has been around for less time and has also been revamped over time, I have 2 seamaster 300s and will eventually get a po but there is no point discontinuing either as they are both very iconic watches in the watch community

Dude, what he hell r u talking about? Why would omega discontinue the planet ocean? Has Rolex discontinued the sea dweller and he deep sea? And those watches run on basically the same movement with basically the same dials and, hands, bezels, bracelets and similar aesthetics in general. The PO is entirely a different watch than the seamaster and as such appeals to a different clientele. Some omega fans may even own both. By your logic Tudor should not sell the Pelagos and seiko should limit their divers to the 007

Hopefully, for Omegas reputation and market, they keep the new model in time and make a good competitor against the Rolex Sub. One negatve thing that Omega used have(70s) was the lack of real watertight watches. Hopefully this is only in the past. Rolex was by far more reliable with their Oyster cases. That Diver 300 looks outstanding. I own a vintage Sub since 1976.

Yeah, I agree. Nice watch. But for most of us, having a watch with 600m of water resistance is worthless for every day wear. Not worth doubling the water resistance over the 300m, if it comes with the extra bulk. My speedmaster racing is only 15mm thick, and it has 60 hours power reserve, master chronometer, chronograph function, and a date window. No reason for a 16+mm daily wear. My SMP 300m sits at 13.6mm, and my Submariner sits at about 12.6mm. Once you wear slimmer watches, you can't handle a 16mm plus watch sitting on your wrist. I sold my breitling chronomat for this reason.
