Heineken is probably my least preferred one, but you didn't try Klok beer, specifically served luke warm. That's the true class experience

Phil I am so happy with you choosing Hertog Jan as your number one. It is THE pilsner of choice for people that know what's good for 'em!, also I had the same experiences with getting my dad a beer from the basement 😂.

@@00wheelie00 Not every Dutch beer drinker does agree. I prefer Alfa, Brand and Gulpener. But to be honest: my first choice would be a German Export like DAB or Paulaner.

Regarding the pilsners, Hertog Jan is often regarded as the most crowd pleasing. Different people have different taste. The east likes to drink Grolsch, with Hertog Jan as second most popular. The west like to drink either Amstel or Heiniken, also with Hertog Jan as second choice. The south drinks Bavaria or Jupiler with Hertog Jan as the follow up. There are also areas where Hertog Jan is the number one. So all and all, you can never go wrong with it.

als iemand uit het westen zie ik idd heiniken en amstel het meeste. maar ik vind het niet bepaald lekker. ga veel liever voor grolsch en als dat er niet is hertog jan. en dat komt best vaak voor. heineken en amstel zijn alleen populair in de bar, maar niet bij mensen thuis.

Hertog Jan and Grolsch are our best pilsners in my opinion. As for the rest, you had an interesting sample of Dutch beers! You should try Texels skuumkoppe next time; that's one of my favorite newer beers.

La Trappe Quadruple is certainly one that will sneak up on you. Very refined taste and then boom :-) For me this is a beer to enjoy when watching a movie or reading a book, slow consumption.

You should taste Straffe Hendrik II, the black bottle. It's a Flemish quadruple the best I've ever tasted. Greetings from the North.

Fun fact: the Dutch "Bok"- beer was originally based on a style of beer brewed in Einbeck, Germany (in the local dialect pronounced as "Oanbock"). It is somewhat heavier in alcohol than pilsener and reddish/brown of colour. In Dutch, a "bok" is a billy goat or buck, so on the label this animal is often showed. But it is traditionally a German beerstyle.

Grew up and studied in the Netherlands myself. In the category 'Pilsener', in my opinion, Hertog Jan is by far the best one. Also some interesting beers you might try for a possible next episode: 'IJwit' from 'Brouwerij 't IJ' (Brewery from Amsterdam, you can get it in every supermarket, Albert Heijn definitely sells it), Triple Karmeliet (Beer from Belgium, also sold in most Dutch supermarkets, be careful, it's a strong one) and Leffe Blond (Also from Belgium, sold in most Dutch supermarkets, especially good in Summer time). Living abroad now, and watching this video makes me realize how much I miss those amazing beers, haha! Proost!

@@jamesedwards1284 DT is right; on the east and south-east border, people speak the same dialects on both sides. Dutch and platt-Deutsch are basically the oldest languages of all the West-Germanic languages. Old-Englisch, Dutch (so also platt-Deutsch) are quite the same. Though Dutch and German are very close, Dutch is much closer to English than German is. (In the golden-age era the term Dutch was being referred to there own old -English as well)

La Trappe Triple is the best beer in the world! I did not drink beer till I was 36. When I found out I had lived next to the brewery of La Trappe for the first 18 years of my life cycling alongside it frequently, without knowing! hahaha. It's as good, or better, as Westmalle Triple.

La Trappe is my favorite brand. The actual monastary is a 20 min bikeride away. It is a really nice place to sit, have beer and some food. Wich beer is depends on the season really. In summer it is more blond and wit. In winter it is more dubbel, trippel and quadrupel. The Isid'or is also really amazing.

Amstel beer is named after the Amstel river that runs through Amsterdam. Try rinsing your glasses out between bottles, the residue from the previous beer could affect the flavor of the next. Thanks for the video.

Yes, Dutch also open bottles with bottles, lighters, crates, tables, doors, bicycles, clogs, or tulips. (Not sure how the last one works though 😂)

I hate when people use their teeth, but some of the people I know still do. I would go for a bottle opener or you know a lighter is always nice. We have this metal stairs in our hallway, that works as well 😅

Fun game with la trappe we play in the netherlands. We call it "trappie op trappie af" (wich translates to: going up the strairs, going down the stairs). Trap is the dutch word for stairs. 1. you get all the la trappe beers twice 2. you order them on alcohol percentage from low to high and then back to low 3. you drink them in that order

I am not much of a beer drinker, but my grandmother used to make beef stew with bock beer. It was so savory and delicious with the dark caramel tastes of the beer reduction and beef juices. My grandfather always looked forward to the "bock season". I miss your cooking oma.

The Oedipus thai thai was my weirdest encounter with dutch beer! My advice is to climb with the alcohol percentage, that way your taste isn't as much "preferred". Also a way to naturalize your taste buds is to eat a piece of cheese between tasting beers!

On the "Gaia" beer by Oedipus, which says "Treat your mother right", Gaia is the name of a Greek Goddess of nature and of the planet. You could call her Mother Earth. So the bottle calls upon us to treat the planet - our Mother - right 😊 Update: @shottglass6334 points out a wholly different layer of meaning. The name of the brewery is Oedipus. And in Greek mythology, Oedipus killed his father and married his own mother, even having children with her. He did not know they were his parents, as he was abandoned at birth, but still. "Treat your mother right" gets a VERY different meaning this way. Nice one, brewery! And tip of the hat to @shotglass6334!

Tip, you can visit La Trappe Abbey, there is a tour an d a great terrace where a can try all the beer they produce. And they have bitterballen with beer! The food is very good and there is a shop where you can buy beer, cheese, bread. It's located in Berkel-Enschot nearby Tilburg. 😊

One of my favorite beers from the Netherlands is Texels Skuumkoppe, especially when sitting on the terrace in the sun. I can enjoy one glass for about 30 minutes :)

You can visit the Hertog Jan brewery in Arcen (near Venlo). In the same village you can also go to Graanbranderij IJsvogel where they make jenever, bitters and that stuff. A Dutch tradition is a "kopstoot" a glas pils and a shot jenever on the side....

La Trappe Quadripple is indeed not one you usually drink a lot of (if you order a beer at the club you get pilsner). Usually craft beers in general you drink like 3 to 5 of in an evening, and usually all different ones. It's more of a at home with friends/family or in a cafe you sit down at a table kind of drink.

im dutch and i went to the LaTrappe brewery a few years ago. its awesome you have the kloister up top and the basement is this huge stainless steel bottling plant, they run a bar inside too where we could try their new experiments, one of which is now commercially available. the guy in the black dress is the most senior monk there. LaTrappe quadruple is my fav special beer and my fav pilsner is Hertog Jan, its very popular here. Heineken Silver is the light variant with less calories, its not very popular at all. Amstel is very popular near Amsterdam where its from but i really hate it. Grolsh and Bavaria is quite common too.

I would also choose Hertog Jan (which indeed means Herzog) as the best Dutch Pilsener. There is always a lot of debate between people who love Heineken, Amstel, Grolsch or Bavaria, which is best and which is just piss water. But they all agree that Hertog Jan is a very good beer. The Brand Weizen is also a pretty decent attempt to emulate a German Weizen, but would prefer a Weihenstephaner, König Ludwig, Erdinger or Paulaner any day of the week.

Grolsch is a wonderful beer & I’ve not tried LaTreppe so that’s on the cards. Fusion on beer flavours needs to be subtle as it’s a drink that needs multiple amounts to agree with one’s palate 🍻.

just discovered this channel, really liking your reactions to the different beers. if your still in the netherlands (or in Europe), try the proefpakketten or taster packages from different breweries. may i suggest a proefpakket from the Bax brewery first? love that you love the thai thai beer, would like you to try oedipus proefpakket too ..

Pisener and IPA (India Pale Ale - a double hopped beer) may look similar in colour, but are completely different styles of beer... Ale is top-fermented, meaning the yeast is applied to the top of the wort, and at a higher temperature. Top-fermenting tends to yield more flavour, as esters (a byproduct of both kinds of fermenting) are more pronounced in warm fermenting, as are phenols (which include things like tannin). Fruity, bread-like... Pilsener (a Lager) is bottom-fermented, meaning the yeast works at the bottom of the wort, at a much lower temperature. Because bottom-fermented lagers ferment at a low temperature and for a longer time, the result is a “crisper” beer that has less of the pronounced flavours of an ale...

Hertog Jan is the best "normal" beer or pilsener from the Netherlands. Alfa, which you guys haven't tried (yet) is a good second. I live in Broekhuizen, right across Arcen and right across the Hertog Jan Brewery where they brew the special beers. The pils is brewed in Dommelen in the Dommelsch Brewery, also belonging to the AB-Inbev concern. Got 2 small bars here in Broekhuizen where you can try a lot of beers; one is right at the River Maas, Hoëg (only from spring till begin of november) and Wort a little bit further up down the road.

You should try anything from The Molen, it's special beer which comes in a lot of diffrent flavours and alc. percentages. It's a brewery near the place I live (Bodegraven), each year there is a beer fest called Borefts. Highly recommend that.

Quadrupel beers or any special non pilsener beers in general are enjoyed more as a delicacy. You don't really drink them when going to a festival or something. It's more of a thing to be enjoyed with friends during a meal or on a night out at a beer cafe. But in general people don't stop at just 1.

Hertog Jan is also my fav pils. and La trappe Quadrupple is my fav among all those beers. i could drink arround 8 over the evening and ill still be okay (ish) :)

For oedipus you should've definetly tried the mannenliefde as well and I think including some other sensations Like IJwit from brewery het IJ and skuumkoppe from brewery Texels would also be really cool

I usually drink 6 11% beers in one evening (Kasteel brown or Gulden Draak) they are not that bad. Hence my nickname (beer camel) Hertog Jan is pretty good and Brand has a really nice Porter.

About the quadrupel: I usually keep it at tripels, they have a better taste/heavyness balance imo. I always say hertog is the best common pilsener, so good choice having it in the lineup. 6:08 it's an eternal struggle to teach everyone, but I'm wearing that teachers mantle. 10:12 exactly

My favourite would be La Trappe Double for the flavour balance, and Quadruple when I want to feel it. I would NOT have more than one, sipped slowly while reading or watching something. Hertog Jan if I just want a pilsner. :p I switch to Brandenbock in autumn because I can and to keep it varied.

My brothers and I have been baptized by one of the monks who lived at the Trapisten monastery where they make La Trappe. Whenever he had a jubilee (so many years living there as a monk) he invited us, they threw good parties and all the La Trappe you can imagine. But be careful, it makes you drunk fast lol. He was a very kind guy by the way. The way I think a monk should be😊

Funny to read how "special" that bottle is abroad. Maybe a "nice to know" thing, guitarist in the Netherlands are often using the rubber ring from the closing thing of the bottle to secure there guitar straps more.

I was missing Amsterdam Maximator 11.6%, my favourite brew. However I can drink it only with a splash of lemon juice. 2 cans and 🤪 It's quite popular here in CH but probably not so in DE.

I drink half liter Gladiators now and then, also 10 %. In every Dutch supermarket, around 1,40 €. Usually I drink twice a week, 6 or 7 cans.

Phil, your discision to choose Hertog Jan is definitly the right choice. Hertog Jan is in my opinion the best regular Dutch Pilsener! Greets from Limburg (the province where you can find the Hertog Jan brewery)

Grolsch is brewn in Enschede, just across the border from Gronau. Grolsch also has the heavy kanon beer. Enschede also has an interesting brew pup, Stanislaus Brewskowitch. You might want to to try their all black. Bavarian brewers from Bavaria sued the Dutch Bavaria brewer because of the name. Donker herfst bier, dark autumn beer is sold by multiple brands. You should check the ingredients, they can taste really different. You just scratched the surface on Dutch beers. Another one you might like is Davo beers from Deventer. A nice train ride from Germany

Hertog Jan is a really good beer. Also one of my favorites. They also offer a famous quadruple. Dutch people love strong beers. You should try Grolsch Kanon 😅

I like Grolsch the best for a traditional pilsner. The Heineken sold in the US used to be completely a different beer than the stuff in the Netherlands. I suspect it still is.

This is a very stubborn urban legend. Heineken is exactly the same in each country they sell; they don't change their recipe anywhere. Amstel (which is also owned by Heineken) is the beer that gets adapted to local markets (and thus changed for different countries).

Hertog Jan is always my to go to beer to drink. I also like to drink Palm Herfstbok in fall/winter, but that's a Belgian beer.

Hey Philander Deana, I prefer to drink the Belgian trappist beer but I also think that Dutch trappist la trappe is one of the best beers,,haha, yes we Belgians don't drink piss, but beer with a lot of % alcohol…But light beer is my favorite Singha 🍺

Most of us Dutch unfortunately go for quantity. I'm happy because I've learned to appreciate beer for its quality. Please no millennials' beer for me (ipa 😑😝). Sipping is enjoying; most specialty beers from Belgium are made for that!

I have a La Trappe triple or quadrupel every time I make chili or something else which needs beer. Gives a great flavor to the food and having to drink the leftover beer isn't bad either.

This is our treat beer. It's strong but delicious. We enjoy the quadruple more than the triple. Both are good though

LaTrappe Quadrupel is my favorite Dutch trappist. It's so good. Personally, I only drink this with dinner and only one.

Really, I personally prefer using leffe for cooking. They are a bit more basic and understated in their flavor and usualy with some more deeper notes, which just translates better in coocking I think

i like that you like hertog jan the most its for my shared number one with grolsch, those stronger beers like the triples and quadruples are not an average day beer, we call it "speciaal bier" and not meant to be drunk all night because you get wasted and the hangovers are way worse after 5-6 of those. There are so many breweries these days in the Netherlands that you could do like 20 more of these episodes😅

Great reaction vid. Hertog Jan = best overall Dutch Pilsner, Weizen/white beer is nice summer beer (should have tried Korenwolf though, Brand is good 2nd), bok is smooth winter beer.

I like Deannas choices. They are more for enjoyment and having 1-2. Hertog Jan and other thin beers if you would drink more.

For regular beers I prefer Hertog Jan in general and Grolsch for the summer days (very refreshing), not in the market for any doubles and triples or higher as those make me feel full and tipsy quickly, and don't like sour or fruit beers. Brand is a bit bitter, and Amstel and Heineken do not have my preference. Bavaria I get when Grolsch and Hertog Jan are not available. Love German beers like Konig Ludwig and Weihenstephaner.. Gulpener pilsener (the one you didn't taste in this sitting) is a bit bitter yet less bitter than Brand, and comes in a beautiful blue bottle, refreshing and not bad for variation.

The triple etc is more of a special beer you take one, maybe 2 on a evening. Like you have Jack Daniels whiskey that you can down a whole bottle, and you have more expansive whiskey you take a glass an evening and just sip. And hertog Jan is the best "normal" beer of the Netherlands. I can also really recommend the Hertog Jan Grand Prestige or the yearly limited edition Grand prestige.

phil, good rating, number one and two are beers from the province (Bundesland) Limburg, you know Venlo (where i'm from), Roermond, Sittard, Maastricht, bordering Germany. Hertog Jan is the best pilsner from the Netherlands I think, Brand is also very good. I think the Gulpener pilsner is also one of the best

Love this video from this lovely couple. I prefer to start the evening with a pilsner like Grolsch or Brand, then an IPA, a dubbel or two and the strongest as the nightcap, mostly a Belgian Gulden Draak or the Quadrupel.

For the La Trappe Quad, yeah that's high in alcohol volume. I'm past the age of drinking just for the sake of getting drunk, might have a couple of them but would then move onto something different. If the good times flow then I may end up drunk though.

Hertog Jan is really tasty. You can also visit the Brewery or eat and drink in the Brewery Restaurant. They have a pipeline from the Brewery to the Restaurant. It's in Arcen not far from you.

We argue a lot on beers here, but I'm glad to see Phil likes Hertog Jan. It's the preferred pilsner in my town, and I'd say it's entirely deserved.

Proost. Good overall beers I think. But you missed the best one. It's called Kanon by Grolsch. High percentage with amazing taste. Next time just buy one and try. And have fun😂

ThaiThai and LaTrappe Quadruppel are really among my blind choices. I love em. They are on par with Westmalle Trippel. But the instances where I want to go for lower alcohol perecentage, Hertog Jan does the job really fine.

About the heavier and stronger beers. These beers are not meant be drunk like a standard Pilsner. You need to have some experience, and well, more taste when you drink these beers. They are often more seasonal beers, or beers that go with a nice meal. Just like with a good wine. Next time, try some more diversity and different styles of beer. Try smaller beer brands like Jopen Beer.

Grolsch used to be way more bitter back in the day and in a brown bottle ("beugelfles"). The fact that you find Amstel beer more bitter than Grolsch tells a lot in my opinion

Grolsch Beugel is the best! It tastes very different from the normal Grolsch pilsener. The Hertog Jan is also pretty good. I wouldn't want to try that rest-mix of yours at all :D

When I drink beer I usually don't drink pilsners. But I don't start very strong, but eventually end up with somethig like a stout, like a quadrippel. like a menu. Most Dutch people drink pilsner when they go to big events or want to drink a lot of volume. The more special beers are for people who like quality more than quantity or like a more complex taste.

Today Amstel is owned bij Heineken and is brewed in the Heineken factories . Both brands originated in Amsterdam and were fierce competitors. Heineken is a familyname where Amstel is named after the Amstel river which flows through Amsterdam

Hertog Jan has multiple variations the grand prestige is one of mine favorites. But they also create very good barrel projects. If you want to go for dutch special beers i would recomend Moersleutel, they experiment allot. I realy like their dark beers they go to 10% and higher 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤

Hertog Jan is definitely the best dutch pils. When we are standing in a bar or clubbing, we drink standard pils. But when we are with friends, just chatting or having a cozy night in, we drink speciaal bier, which are the dubble, triple and quadruples. Mostly, you drink just one or two of them in a slow pace. At least, me as a girl does that 😂 the brand, hertig jan, Heineken and bavaria are the old fashioned regular beer, but there are exiting new stuff on the market, where oedipus is one of. Highly reccomend checking out these new styles, brewed by, for example: de molen, brouwerij kees, x-brewing or gebrouwen door vrouwen (brewed by lady's).

I'd say the best Dutch pilsners are Hertog Jan and Grolsch (not really in that order, just personal taste). But generally speaking the 2 best.
