The Premier League is widely regarded as the most entertaining. As Magnus Henderson writes, despite Spain’s dominance in the European competitions, it is England’s Premier League that is the most popular league in the world, thanks, in part, to their dominance of the TV market.
But how do television rights work? Let’s find out...

As an English-speaking Asian viewer, I think Premier League, in being English itself, is already a significant advantage. The whole viewing experience is unmatched against other top 5 leagues, from pre-match analysis to in-game commentary to post-match. No doubt other leagues are trying, but with English being the international language, Premier League will always have this linguistic advantage.

I seriously think this is a overrated clame and overused, any league anyone can beat anyone, that is the magic of football. Last season Benfica lost the portuguese title most likely thanks to a game at home to a result of 3-4 to Santa Clara, a team from a small Island, this season Bayern just lost for 4 goals against a average German side, Barcelona has lost to a weak Osasuna at home etc etc The most competitive professional leagues, most likely are the Brazillian league, in which truly any team is big and can beat anyone, go look how many teams have won the title last decade and compare to the EPL. Now the EPL is the one with best marketing, best conditions etc no question about that, but now saying is the most competitive, i have alot of doubts about that. realistically you think the top 6 can win the league? Doubt it.

@nauxsi
@nauxsi 2 жыл бұрын
Nailed it. TV money was given evenly to all clubs so each could buy a top player or coach. If you're a player who wants to increase value you can go Southampton for a few seasons, then make a more lucrative move to big six. Also Premier league has free flowing football. I watched a la liga game, it was like watching American football. Play stopping every 20 secs.

In the 1980s it was Italy. La Liga is consistently the best since the late 1990s. Yep and investment and the other leagues ligue1 serie a la liga had many money problems club ownership. Bundesliga was once a top league were top players were spread out between the teams evenly. But that changed example bayern, So certain clubs basically got bigger financial backing and made these teams lucrative. Thats why england looked at other sports they were selling a package of a league were all teams are competitive so its just gone around in a circle if you look at bundesliga for example their trying to do similar thing to what happened to bundesliga in 90s with top players spread out around clubs. La liga and serie a always had the best south american players cause of language and for brazilians portugal is a way into europe I remember when ajax was a rich club or psv in the 90s. That all changed when the premier league got the right rules to stop clubs going into liquidation or bankrupt they soughted out their marketing and finding investors. England also was a better place to do business cause of the stock exchange in london and the business side to it and also it has a good relationship with american investors. And with countries like asia africa middle east for example television companys are really only gonna buy a league rights where viewers are willing to watch competitive matches compared to other leagues. Where as other leagues your buying rivalry games of top teams in countries. Whether its scotland turkey portugal germany spain france italy and so on.

Every video is really well balanced and structured, you always come to a very pleasing natural conclusion, but just as everything you have talked about is settling, you are bombarded with THE ATHLETIC!!! Don’t get me wrong, I like the Tifo/Athletic stuff, and am a subscriber to The Athletic, and Tifo, but always think after every video that it would be such a vast improvement from assing an extra moment to let the content settle, before moving on to promote The Athletic’s offers. Soooooooo when do we start talking about the English bias seeping into Tifo Football? About EPL's popularity. Just look at the media an English speaker consumes. It's all from the perspective of the EPL 90 percent of the time. Obviously the league that gets the most exposure gets more popular and hence gets more foreign TV deals. The PL definitely is the best marketed football league. Even with much more parity of the financial pie and the much touted any team can beat any team on any day or the even wilder claim that they have six team constantly competing for the title we clearly see tiers with only three teams max at any one time capable of actually winning the league. There are clear patterns of dominance there, however the marketing campaign and format with elements like playing through the Christmas holidays help cast it as the most demanding and exciting league.
@luckyboy4766
@luckyboy4766 3 жыл бұрын
The point is there are 6 big teams that COULD win the title if they get things right. Of course they never all get it right at the same time - they're all p different cycles. And if they all get it wrong an underdog like Leicester can win it. 5 different winners in the past 10 years and you can't predict which teams will get it right each season. That's the unpredictability lacking in other big leagues where it's a monopoly or duopoly for the title with the same one or two teams.
@HIM-lk6of
@HIM-lk6of 3 жыл бұрын
@@luckyboy4766 looks that way.... yet you just admitted that there is hardly ever a case where all of the top 6 PL clubs get it right so there is always a gap and in reality not all of the big 6 have an equal chance of winning it, even with that established the big 6 hardly changes season to season and takes at least a decade and a lot of money for the lowest two of the top 6 teams to cement breaking into the top 4. Pool spent a while languishing outside of the top 4 and as a big club they're back, with Arsenal on the slide yet teams like Everton or even the fairytale Lester can't crack the top 4 and stay. It took Roman coming to CFC to put them in the convo for consistent PL contenders. Outliers like Lester happen once every 20 years or more.... the league looks unpredictable yet if you step back, take a broader view very clear patterns and tiers emerge... where one or two teams dominate at a time as the genuine title contenders then a second tier of at max 3 teams competing to round out the top 4 then a further 2-3 teams challenging to round out the top 6 with positional jostling from the same clubs in the same tier brackets. From there mid table is a toss up and like other leagues more often than not at least 2/3 or all of the newly promoted teams get relegated. What really sells it is the style... most teams play in a typical English way and neither usually has control over tempo for too long... leading to end to end matches often... almighty scrambles around MF and goal without much more quality compared to other leagues... fans buy into that as football is generally a low scoring game compared to other big globally followed games like cricket, rugby, basketball... It is an amazing league and is very well marketed. Claims of 6 clubs being able to win it every season is part of the sales pitch, an exaggeration for effect.

I believe that La Liga's high European ranking stems from the fact that their top sides have to put in less effort beating the down-table sides than their PL counterparts. Barcelona and RM can basically sleepwalk through lesser sides with ease, and 6-0 and 8-0 scores are commonplace. They can then concentrate their energies on UCL and the like. In the PL, the lower-level sides are much stronger, and top sides have to put more effort to gain wins. Also, there are like 6-7 "big" clubs in the PL vying for top honors, as opposed to 2 or 3 in the other leagues.

I think UEFA’s coefficient ranking La Liga as the highest quality league has a lot to do with Messi and Ronaldo being there firing their teams into the latter stages over the years (I know Ronaldo has left I’m talking recent history) Plus the topic discussed in the video where La liga split the TV rights 4:1 in the big clubs favour which helps them establish a match day advantage over the smaller teams more often than not. That’s what allows them to be consistent in the CL cause they don’t have to play at nearly 100% to beat the smaller teams. Throw in a winter break and it’s easy to see why they maintain performance levels in the CL. But la liga football is a very technical style and quite pleasing on the eye. Hopefully they can rebalance the tv payments even more so the competition levels go up from the smaller teams. Would make it more of a draw to watch.

That is a large part of it, but not even the biggest part since any football league can hire English commentary and production. Their first-to-market aspect is even bigger; the PL and Sky Sports basically created global distribution of professional soccer on television. The La Liga followed and their language helped them too, but the French league has nowhere near as much global distribution as the Spanish league despite also having a popular language spoken in many regions.

@lumiya4596 3 жыл бұрын
@@lonestarr1490 Yeah cause to gain more viewership since these leagues have their own language, introducing a variety of language commentary would up their views. But you have to think here. Not all countries can access all language options. I have three sports networks from where I am featuring football games feature football games from england, turkey, saudi, germany, and france. I can tell you now that my country does not speak any other language other than our own and english. So its really hard for me to watch a football game where the commentator's language is not english. And i'm almost certain english commentaries of non english leagues/countries are only found in the internet. La liga's and Ligue 1's youtube channel do have english commentary. They have to diversify their language commentaries cause like I said, english is the universal language and around the world it is more likely that a non-english person's second language is english than any other. You wont see premier league getting Spanish, italian, etc. commentary more often than non-english league have english commentary. Figure out why is that the case. Clue: Its what I said from the start.

@Mantorras Montquilla its gone full circle if you look at other sports what they do is have salary caps or make sure top players are spread around teams in a league. Where football went wrong from the late 90s is that one or two clubs got financial backingin their leagues and they brought up all the best players. So what premier league has done in order to make the leagues competitive again like other sports is having to invest in every club in the league hence making sure every club has top qaulity players. Thats why the mls has a salary cap and you get different teams winning also their comp is different resulting in a competitive league.

Let's face it, you'll never have Elche beating Real Madrid 7-2 and Alavés spanking Barcelona 5-1 within a week in La Liga. In the last 10 years the EPL had 5 different champions and nobody won more than twice in a row. In the last 10 years the Bundesliga had 2 different champions and Bayern won 8 in a row... In the last 10 years in La Liga they had 3 different champions with a single Atlético win other than full Real & Barca domination. In France, since the full PSG takeover in 2012 they won every single Ligue 1 title except for one (won by Monaco). Except for the 09-10 win of Inter, Serie A has been entirely dominated for 10 years by Juventus. All the major European leagues are one or at most two horse races for a decade now, except the premier league. The tempo, the passion of the fans, the international language of the commentary, the generally high level of play even among the "smaller" clubs (hence the above mentioned freak results) means the EPL is the most entertaining to watch. It has a great combination of everything: quality, excitment, unpredictability, atmosphere and drama.

tempo 4/5...not much to say here :) could be 5/5 if the mind of some players could keep up with the pace on and off the pitch passion of the fans 2/5...even before covid the ticket-prices were too high and MOST of the "fans" are on other continents... language of commentary 5/5 high level of play among "smaller" clubs 2/5...would still be fodder for the likes of PSG, Real/Barca, Bayern and Liverpool and City showed that last season atmosphere 3/5 drama 2/5...depends on media...english national team though 5/5 Conclusion: while the most entertaining it is just a rerun of Seria A in 80s/90s...take all the money from EPL and throw it on any of the other top leagues and you'll get almost the same overall score

Actually, most of this comment is wrong. Statistically, La Liga has been *more* competitive than the Premier League in recent years. There have been more upsets (Barcelona and Real Madrid *regularly* dropping points) whilst the top teams in England (City and Liverpool in the past few years) go entire seasons and only lose once or twice. As to the quantity of teams that dominate - over the past 10 years the Premier League has been dominated by 3 teams - Chelsea and City, and now more recently Liverpool. Arsenal and United are not what they once were and Spurs were never true title contenders. This is much the same as the big 3 in Spain (with Sevilla more recently joining the mix). If you want to go back further and include the likes of United and Arsenal then I shall simply go back further and include Valencia and Deportivo. As to title races themselves, they have been much more competitive in La Liga. In the Prem, it is a regular occurrence for a single team to run away with it (and to be able to figure out who will win between December and February). In Spain, this is not the case. The title races between the top 3 are extremely close and difficult to call. Take last season, for instance, where we all knew that Liverpool were going to win, but the title race between Real and Barça went to the penultimate game of the season (with Barcelona on top of the table until the final few games). On average, title winners in La Liga are wrapping up the league with much fewer points than their English counterparts. Where it is now common place for City and Liverpool to get into the 90, sometimes 100, point margin, the big Spanish teams are winning in the 70 and 80 point margins. This is because of the competitive nature of the league and regularity of shock results. To look at the relegation zone, more points are required, on average, in order to guarantee survival in La Liga than in the Premier League (implying a much tighter title race). Add to this the fact that it is, on average, less likely for a newly promoted team to be instantly relegated in La Liga and you realise that the league is competitive top-to-bottom because there isn’t such a big gulf in quality in Spain as there is in England. In England, you have a handful of teams who are too good for the Championship but not good enough for the Premier League. These teams often (over the course of years) straddle the two leagues until they eventually either break through or run out of the financial fire power to maintain that level. This simply doesn’t happen as frequently in Spain. Take Eibar, for instance. This is a team with a stadium capacity of 4,000 in a city of 20,000 inhabitants. In 2014 they were promoted to La Liga for the first time and due to their tiny size and lack of finances they were expected to instantly get relegated. Fast forward to 2020 and they are still in the top division, having proven themselves more than capable of competing in the highest level of world football. They have, on multiple occasions, caused big upsets (including beating Real Madrid multiple times - notably a 3-0 victory against Los Blancos at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2018/19). This, according to the stats, is much less frequent in England. Finally, it is worth talking about the more competitive nature of the 4th place and also Europa League spots in Spain. Far more Spanish teams compete for these spots than in England and (very often) it ends up being a curse. A team like Sociedad, Celta, Valencia or Getafe might get European football, but because of the added games and the highly competitive nature of La Liga, they find themselves in a relegation battle or in the bottom half of the next season, allowing for new teams to attempt to compete for Europe - maybe Bilbao, Sevilla, Levante or Betis. So, to conclude: You’re chatting rubbish mate. You’re peddling the same lies that ignorant Premier League fans always repeat. It simply isn’t true.
