This video si the next in my series of guides to the various ranges that Porsche have released over the years. In prior guides, we’ve looked at all the 911s but this time, I will take you through each and every variant of Porsche 928 so you can choose which one is best for you! This is not aimed ot be a completely objective analysis of which is the BEST 928 but rather which is the best for you! Some people will like the early cars and others the later ones. We all have different needs. All the models and all the details of Porsche 928 from 1978 to 1995! Beautifully shot videos of all the cars whilst I show you which model of Porsche 928 is which! Long story short: I am a motor journalist myself. My special subject area was and still is Porsche. What you give here from the best, surpasses EVERYTHING on the net. All the comparisons, the history and especially the footage - where does that come from, I only know that from the books for the 928 owners - are absolutely brilliant. My father picked up his 928 in Zuffenhausen with me in 1978. To LeMans videos they handed me jam sandwiches and cocoa in the brick building when I was eight years old, it's really not made up. Today, I drive an 928 S4. It's funny how history repeats itself. As an absolute 911-fan, I may say: the transaxles are so underrated that it hurts.

Having had a 1986.5 version, I always thought I had the best of everything. The great 5.0 L 4 valve engine, better brakes, etc., the advances of the S4 but the style of the early bodies. The 'pipe organ' intakes gave it lovely midrange power, too. Best car I ever owned, and best car I ever drove, having innovative seat mounts and foot pedal adjustments to give me enough leg room to accomodate these excessively long legs comfortably.

Sweet spot for me was the 928S update/S2. I prefer the looks of the earlier cars to those of the S4, and the MY84 update didn't give that much away in power and torque to the 5 litre 32 valve motor, at least in the "standard" versions. As it happened, I ended up with an ex-UK 928S2, brought into Australia within a year or so of being new.

What I find the most amazing about 928 is the design. Imagine how cars generally looked back in 1978. Sure there were some pretty decent and timeless designs like the new Ford Granada, but most of them looked like Vauxhall Chevette. 928 must have looked like an absolute spaceship among those. 928 facelift 1987 car could still be a new car, if only the pop-up headlights were changed. Unbelievable design, really.

That’s very interesting! I do think the earlier ones look better and ‘sharper’ whereas the older ones round off too many of the attractive parts of the car. Surely the newer ones must drive better though?

Hi there, I'm a relatively new 928 owner but heavy You Tube enthusiast. This video is the most comprehensive, versus baggy video I've come across on 928's. So... thank you! Really thank you!! As the previous commentator said, the footage sources are great and it does surpass all the other videos on You Tube on the subject for conciseness and facts. Again thanks. You probably don't need any constructive criticism, and I wouldn't normally trouble a person or myself. But since I thought your vid was so perfect, and I've watched tons of 928 vids on here, I thought I'd comment... The pasted advert image link could be loads cooler. Many other generic 928 videos have similarly styled holding pictures as yours. Your film is so much more professional and educational that I think it deserves a little bit more of an eye-catching style. I wouldn't want to go into what that would be as I fee that I've already said enough but I am now a fan and am going to subscribe to your show based on your stuff . I just think that the quality of your content might benefit from a graphic "grab". Forgive any perhaps perceived negativity from something that I am so glad exists on You Tube for the 928 community. Despite my comments please keep up the amazing stuff! All the best!!

The '84 - '86 S/S2 cars really are a sweet spot in the range, with the original, slightly lighter, shark-nosed design and 310ps in Euro or UK spec. Some motoring magazines of the day showed a practical 0-60 acceleration time of a manual 928 to be the same as the supposedly faster (and now much more expensive) 930, 911 Turbo. They're certainly a hidden gem.

The 1986 S2 not only had the brakes of the S4 but also the body shell, suspension and interior of the S4. Perfect combo in my opinion 😊I understood the 86.5 referred to the S3 with the 5l engine but different intake from the S4.

I've been lucky to own six 928's, the very first was a 1980, 4.5 and the last being 1994 - 928 GTS. What a fantastic car to own and drive. Just love em. When I had the GTS, I also had a 996-911 Turbo at the same time. That was a fantastic car too but not quite as cool as the GTS. There's just something about a 928, maybe it was because that's the poster I had on my bedroom wall as a kid. Great video Jay.

I was working in the Parts Dept at the Porsche dealership in Phx, AZ in 78 when these came out. You'd a thunk a water-cooled model would go over pretty well there considering the super-heated air the 911's, etc were sucking in during the summer and the melting asphalt they were driving on but nope. Lots of raised eyebrows and "let's wait and see" if I recall right (which is definitely not guaranteed). Great seeing all the strides it made since then. Great days(!), as they most always are when you're looking in the rear-view mirror at things 20, okay 30, no no no no nooooo(!) 45 years ago (had to use a calculator and a box of tissues for that one).....

I have owned 4 928s over the years. The best overall for me was a 83 928 that I bought used with 50k miles and owned for 3 years. It was a solid car, and the only thing I did was tires, brakes, change the oil, timing belt and water pump (at around 75k) However I am partial to 78 928 4.0L engines because they are non interference engines. On the anemic side, but I turbocharged a 4.0L engine in one and added Electromotive EFI, S4 brakes etc. It was fast fast. 928s are the best handling and most comfortable cars I have ever owned.

@@JAYREAD I had that one 83' solid car that gave me hardly any problems, but the last one I owned was a real nightmare. On the last one, I figured I was spending about $250 a month (doing the work myself) including tires, and I had to work on it at least once every two weeks. When these cars start going bad they go really bad. And parts are high. Met a guy at the local Porsche dealer. He bought a really nice low mileage 86' 928, like 30k miles, and then proceeded to spend $4k at the dealer while they tried to sort out his electrical problems. The electrical systems on these cars can be a real nightmare. See if you can find a photo of the back of the fuse/relay board which is in the passenger side foot well. 100% all black wires and god forbid you ever have a leak in that area. And these cars eat rear tires and nobody can align them properly. Even when properly aligned, I was going through a pair of rear tires every year. And the interiors as nice as they are fall apart especially the leather covered dash. Still, if I could find a really nice one that was well maintained, I would buy another one. The exhaust note from these cars is like a symphony.

@@JAYREAD I forgot to mention that in the later cars with the 4 cam engines, if you brake booster ever fails, you have to pull the engine or remove the drivers side head to replace it. That said a clutch change is relatively easy since you do not have to pull the engine. It is done from underneath via an access cover on the bell housing.

When I look on the latest number plate official info it tells me 310 BHP, is there a possibility there was a 1983 car already having the 310 bhp with three speed AT? I presume it is an error , anyhow cant wait to drive it is ne here its exhaust

If I had the cash I’d buy an automatic 95 928 GTS, black on black. Put modern carbon Brembo’s on and bump up the HP to around 600. Modern shocks/springs (Bilstein/Eibach) bolt on custom exhaust for a deep growl(Borla). Change out the 10 speakers to modern(JBL)and install a powerful Amp with custom Bluetooth/Apple car play(Alpine). Finish off with tinting the windows and clear film protection for the front fascia and I’d be all set. Ohh I can just see it now, maybe someday 😎

Always loved the exterior styling ! But the car should have had an interior layout refresh I just couldn’t get on with that interior, and those auto gearbox’s were agricultural! Which was a real shame , imagine a modern auto gearbox mated to that engine !!!! , its the only front Engined Porsche I never owned , that engine would last for ever as long as it didn’t overheat , if it overheated the rings would dig into the bores which get soft with heat , as the tolerances are very small and score / scuff the bores which meant the block was toast

Besides the cost of a vehicle, what is the most important factor? Power and twist (torque). That engine has the most of them. Not only that, except the rear lights are the best design of all the models it had. It's additionally my second absolute favorite of all road going Porsche, after the Cayman GT4 RS. As for the price of that most expensive of those 928s, there should be a few of the that would need to be fixed, which will have an excellent price. All that's required is to find the components to fix it. A working person is able to do that work himself. It won't be show quality, though. A complete restoration of it will be priced at well past a hundred thousand dollars, possibly 250,000 dollars. This all depends upon how much money the people are able or willing to spend on it.

Hey, Tum Slucks, we aren't going to enjoy the same vehicle because we all have our own DNA. Man, what a boring planet were we to have the same interests in the same subjects. There's more to this, though. Knowing the final version of the 928 GTS is my favorite of them. Other people wouldn't agree with that. What those people think about them is for them to decide upon. Since I first saw that final version, it became my absolute favorite. Then came the Cayman GT4. Wow, what a car. Yes, it needed more. So, I waited for the ultimate model of it to become available. It finally did, except it continues to need a better engine. It's the best of all the Porsche cars ever. Did any of you people reading this know that it uses GT3 components? Yes, it does.

Simple 928s 1980/84 mechanical fuel injection with a manual box less to go wrong and gas flow the heads and it will go like a rocket on steroids although its fast enough as standard. Remember 928s is the original 4.2 ltr without CAT and none multi valve engine, its built to last, mine did over 240k before it threw a con rod putting 3 holes in the block and was still running. Sure the later models have more goodies, but you pay the price when it all goes wrong and yes the S4 body was way sexier but the 928 looked cool with a set of later low profile wheels but its a heavy car (2 tons) so you have to be careful what tyres you use, the walls have to be strong and hard. Only main advantage of the S2 and later, better brakes and yeah that bit is a little important when your flying down the road at top speed 186 mph !!! and yes it will do that, and more

86.5 Are the best. They have the bigger brakes and the most torque until the problematic GTS cars came along. When uncorked, they have the best sound becasue of camshaft timing that was exclusive to the 85 and 86's. That combined with the lower weight of the OB cars. Also consider that the 85/86 4 valve cars are fairly simple and dont have as many electrical gremlins as the 87+.

The BEST 928 was the S2, specifically with the 5 speed manual transmission. I drove one for 19 years and it was able to get into the 13's in a quarter mile with little more than an exhaust and a Porken ignition chip~ The 16 valve US models were all more about cool cruising that flat out performance. 80% were a cruddy Mercedes-Benz automatic, which seriously blunted performance. I really have NO idea at all why anyone would want an automatic 928! Porsche's are about involvement, and an automatic removes much of the involvement so what is the point? Really, there are TWO types of 928's: MANUAL transmission cars and automatics. And automatics really ought to be called 927.5's or something stupid like that because they are STUPID cars for STUPID people! Sorry, I'll climb down from my soap box now... Really, the twin distributor 16 valve cars with the manual transmission were the BEST. After them came the GTS cars with 5.4 liters and about the same horsepower. The surge of the S2 car's cams above 4000 RPM is something that you have to experience! I let a hard core Chevy fan drive my 928 one time and he told me it felt exactly like a '68 Camaro with the high compression 302 cubic inch engine, a version with very long duration. 302 Chevy's were rare and designed for RPM, so this makes sense. Funny thing: The later 5.0 liter M28 engine from 1986 onward was 4957 cc's, or nearly exactly the same as that Chevy....
