Join me for what ended up being a remarkably short video for having spent an entire day filming and swapping 3 lenses about on my camera 😅
The photos used in this video are out-of-camera JPEGs with no added sharpening or noise reduction.

Yep, I bought the 28-200 and I really like it. It compliments my kit very nicely - with a 20-60 and a 50 prime 1.8. Lovely.

I’m very much looking forward to getting the 28-200. I’ve been playing around with the pixel/pixel mode on my S5ii lately, it’s pretty handy. If you’re shooting 4k video it would turn that 200mm to 300mm and replace my 70-300, at least for video. Great episode as always. Looking forward to the next one.

Very impressive review and very helpful to me. I love your thorough, low key and understated style. A refreshing change on KZfaq. I subbed. I’m new to the full frame, S5ii, and trying it out to see if I want to leave Fujifilm behind. (X-T5, C-T4, and nine lenses). I mainly focus on photography, not videography, and am starting out with the S5ii, the 85mm f/1.8 (came as a kit), and the Sigma 28-70. But I’m excited for the 28-200 because my family isn’t excited about waiting around for me to change lenses, LOL. Keep up the good work!

Ooh tough choice. There's a lot to like about the Fujifilm system too. I'd probably own something in every camera system if I had a spare pile of cash and really let myself go wild 🙈 These "super" zooms are great for a day out with family for precisely that reason 😆 Particularly for things like hikes where you need a wide variety of focal lengths. The 85mm and 28-70 are great lenses too!

Ok, I am a owner of a recently purchased s5IIX trying to learn how to use ir. That’s why I did find this channel. But…. I actually keep watching all the videos because of “the voice”. After listening to each video, I feel myself the like the Salieri of the voices. Growing & growing envy 😁😁😁 Really great video. I am considering buying the 14-28 myself but the 28-200 it seems to have “better glass for video”, if the sentence makes sense.
@robert_may
@robert_may Ай бұрын
Haha thanks very much! Both of those lenses are great and work well as a pair together. For video the 14-28 is pretty flexible because you can use 4k50p to crop in to a 28-56 equivalent, which is handy. But I do love the 28-200 as an all day lens!

Hi Robert, I have the 20-60 and the 70-300, which pretty much covers everything for me. The images from the 70-300 are quite frankly brilliant, and thats in my hands as an amateur photographer !! great video as always.

I really need to get ahold of the 70-300 at some point and give it a go! I also haven't tried one of the 70-200 lenses yet but I can't remember which 🙈

I just have to say thanks for actually putting the work in and taking identical comparison shots! Most reviews of these lenses are extremely sloppy and don't make any attempt to really compare in similar conditions. Nice review :)

@@robert_may Well it's appreciated! I currently own the 24-105 and love the versatility - I do find myself shooting wide open when I need the DOF, but I normally shoot with this on my S1H which is much more balanced. I'll be travelling soon and so I'm considering the 28-200 for my S5iix which looks much better size/weight wise. Do you have any other video you've shot with this so far? I mainly shoot f8+ in the day so I'm more worried about general image quality in video, and portability
@robert_may
@robert_may Ай бұрын
@@wavelengthstudio Yeah I can imagine the extra body weight of the S1 range would help with the 24-105! I haven't got any other existing clips on the 28-200, but I'll see if I can record a few things over the next few days and chuck them up 👍

Finally, I have been searching for a comparison video of these two lenses. You did an awesome job as I have been trying to decide on which to go for. Initialing I was going to get the 24-105 since I already have the 20-60 kit lens but after watching this, I am convinced that 28-200 is perfect for my line of work. I have been shooting more of documentaries. I do worry about the low light capabilities. I guess I can't have everything. By the way I use the Lumix s5iiX

My debate is more over my current 70-300 vs. the 28-200 as a general walk-around lens. I also have the 20-60, but that lens's saving grace is that wide end, which is really unheard of on a kit lens (regardless the mount). The 28-200 is just so much lighter for travel.
@robert_may
@robert_may Ай бұрын
Yeah I also love the 20-60! I’m finding I take the 20-60 when out and about in a city but just stick with the 28-200 and 14-28 when hiking/landscaping. I haven’t actually tried the 70-300 yet - would quite like to give that a go.

I replaced my 24-105mm with the 70-300mm as I needed the extra reach. The 28-200mm wasn't out yet. I also own the 20-60mm. However I find I have the 70-300mm on my camera 90% of the time - it's a fantastic lens and I find it sharper than my 24-105mm. I carry around a G850+20mm f1.7 if I need a wider angle shot without swapping lenses around. Though carrying the 70-300 around is really heavy.. if the 28-200mm was available at the time I may have gone with that instead.

Nice choice! I think the 70-300 makes a lot of sense, but yeah weight is always a pain with the bigger lenses, though they are usually the sharper option 😀

Weirdly I received mine in the middle of April and they now show as preorder-only in most shops ever since. Might have been a small initial production run, or it was unexpectedly popular? 🤔

For telephotos the 70-300mm is superb and far better than both of these lenses in terms of Image Quality. But when it comes to versatility and mobilitiy the 28-200mm is a good choice. I consider selling my 24-105 and keep the 28-200. The 24-105 is no outstanding lens. It is okay but not in the way I like the 70-300.

@michelesiniscalchi8695 Ай бұрын
I've read that the 28-200 has fairly weak optical performance beyond 100mm. Have you found any differences in sharpness in comparable focal ranges (28-105) - How do you like the sharpness of the 28-200 at 150 and 200 mm?
@robert_may
@robert_may Ай бұрын
No difference that I could see between the two lenses up to 105mm. Past that, I've been happy with the sharpness of the 28-200 at the longer end. It's not going to be as sharp as something like a 70-200mm lens, but it's sharp enough for my use-case at least. Possibly worth trying it out in a shop if there's one nearby, to see if it suits your needs!

I'm not wholly convinced by 'travel' lenses. I mean I want to (was eyeing up a 16-80/4 the other day), but fundamentally I think my analysis falls somewhere like this; 1) If you're going out, you have to decide what kind of outing this is. Is it about spending time with friends and family or actually a genuinely good photo op? The area itself can often help dictate the lens choice (a flower garden for example might place emphasis on a lens that is going to do well with flower imagery). 2) Whilst a travel lens can be versatile, the overall images often feel lackluster in one way or another. I.e. from the day out do you really keep any of the images, are they genuinely going to make it into a portfolio, or is this the 'smartphone' equivalent for photographers (click once, never really view again). 3) I'm reminded of Daniel Milnor's 50mm video where he chose to go to Italy (he's based in the states) and only with a single prime (a fast 50) for his vacation. I happen to think that is quite gutsy! What he was rewarded with was a consistent set of images, portfolio worthy shots but you have to be ok with not getting some shots too... 4) If you're going out with a main camera then that typically means a main camera bag too, and usually you can squeeze in a second lens. If you're not going out with a main camera then something pocketable like the GR I think makes a nice compromise on a 'friends and family vs photography' ratio. So in summary, travel lenses = versatility but perhaps 'meh' results. A prime or specialist lens = less versatile but perhaps portfolio entry level work. I'm of course not thinking travel lenses don't have a place in REAL landscape work, the kind that is f5.6-f8 and hiking across mountain ranges (aka Andy Mumford stuff), for sure these lenses have their place. I'm meaning more about the casual day trip travel stuff. But yeh I dunno... I'm still a little undecided on this. If I were doing an overseas trip I would be panicking about my choices and approach!
@robert_may
@robert_may Ай бұрын
Haha yeah I think my opinion may be formed somewhat by my days out largely being mountain walks 😆 My main use-case for a single travel lens is that it allows me to shove a second camera in my bag, like a 35mm or my Mamiya 645. Which means that ultimately my bag is just as heavy as normal but now I get to have a fun film photography day out but I still have a useful digital setup for any shots I'd otherwise miss or if the weather turns nasty (which happens often). So the reality for me is that a travel lens is just an excuse to pack even _more_ camera gear 🙈 But overall I've been impressed by this 28-200 anyway. I've taken it for a few sunset hikes already and I've been pleased with the results, particularly considering how much less painful it is to hike it up there!

I just got my 28-200. It sits very tightly on the bayonet. I need to put some force on it to until it clicks. I didn't make this experience with any ohter L-Mount lens (and I have quite some of it). Is this normal for this lens?
@robert_may
@robert_may Ай бұрын
Oh weirdly I don't have that problem. There's always a bit of variance in lenses, and it'll probably free up fairly quickly. I usually prefer the mount to be tighter rather than looser at least 😅

Nice review, i agree fully with it. I love my 28-200, and already sold my 24-105. I use it mainly for video and together with the new firmware update you get insane stabilization. One note though: Sometimes the bokeh is very beautiful, at other moments I find it quite busy. Here is my first video tryout with the lens: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pcxnqbmLp8u4iKM.html

Ooh great video! And yeah I find that with quite a few lenses these days - most longer telephotos have that weird great-but-sometimes-jarring bokeh. Twigs or grass are usually the worst offenders.
