I think Russian is more than adequate in Chisinău for the short term visitor. Even young people speak Russian, much to my surprise.

English, Romanian and Russian are fine in Moldova as a tourist.

@@ConorClyneTsarExperience Russian will pay off more, since you can speak Russian in Poland and the Baltics compared to learning Romanian. Even in Poland, Russian is now a useful language.

@@RovexHD It depends on your goals. If you are also interested in Romania then learning Romanian makes more sense. If you’re interested in Ukraine or Ukrainians then Ukrainian would be the best choice.
