This technique led discussion about the differences, advantages and disadvantages of inline and quad skates, hopes to inform your decision making. Many people make the wrong purchase (for them) and later regret it when they have to buy other skates.
Additional points to remember are that Inlines are way more suited to outdoor skating where surfaces are imperfect. Quads were designed and are best indoors on super smooth (think roller disco) floors. If skating outdoors on quads you’ll have a harder time with rough surfaces and will need even more speed and precise technique to not get caught out.
For more discussion of this subject plus 3 beginner starter videos (for any skates) check out Asha’s new É-Book “Let’s Skate”.
This resource is ideal if you are thinking of taking up skating or have recently started.

I think the most important difference between quads and inlines are that inlines were built for outdoors and quads were built for roller rinks. Unless you have a very nice smooth area to skate over get inlines or you will be tripping over every little crack 😞
@Daniela777.
@Daniela777. 3 жыл бұрын
Speed, in my opinion, makes a difference on trippin over cracks and imperfections on the floor. I've notice it when I'm skating on the streets, if I'm not confident enough about my legs and go slower I'm definitely tripping in any cracks, but if I'm more confident about my performance and go a bit faster those cracks are a thing I just passed on.

Not to the be know it all but there are a lot of adjustments that can be made to quad skates (wheels,toe stops, plate, boot) and the one in particular I'm going to say is you can change the wheels to outdoor wheels. They have a different hardness and are usually larger than wheels for indoor skates.

As a beginner who lives in Greece I didn't have plenty of quad shoes to chose from. So I bought a quad in a boot like those with blades. In the beginning I was so disappointed that they were not as beautiful as the brands of the US, however then I realized that that type of boot gave me more support. Yes, of course is it heavier but it helped me to never fall. I have my boots 3 months now and I never fell.

The shorter wheel base of quads does make it more likely for backward falls (if a skater has incorrect technique). However on inlines the instability is more sideways than backwards (if the technique is wrong). They each have their ways to be unstable if you do the wrong thing.

I LOVE your videos Asha! I just took up my inlines more seriously. I started skating more regularly as I am in the late stages of recovering from Achilles tendon rupture surgery (reverse tumbling off-landing, I am an adult gymnast, and grew up doing ballet). It is really helping me gain strength and endurance again. Anyway I found your videos and have been taking your lessons and finding out how much I need to fix. I always just transferred stuff I picked up from ice skates (which is probably also bad form, and I can transfer your lessons to ice!.) But my skating already improved tremendously! The hardest part was figuring out how to stroke with outside edges, it's getting there. Although I can't hold them yet and struggle with smooth front crossovers, luckily the back aren't too bad! I just bought quad skates as well! They feel so strange I have to get used to the shorter front-back base. They felt so bizarre when I first put them on, I couldn't skate, it was funny, but I started getting the hang of it. I am hoping one day I will be able to one-foot spin on them like I do on ice skates (like a sit-spin) because inlines that's nearly impossible (without toe-stop picks) and would probably take many years. Can you do a video on proper form for preventing knee pain? I was skating so much my weak leg knee got bad tendonitis. I have been on a break from skating to heal it. But I am not sure if it's the way I am skating, or just doing too much on that leg too quick (it was non-weight bearing back in Jan for a month, and I've had lots of PT). I lean so far forward I have all this pressure in my knees, especially going backwards. I have almost all my weight in my toes, and maybe I am putting too much up front. Part of that is fear of falling backwards too, unlike gymnastics there are no mats and asphalt is rough! Yes, I wear all the gear. Anyway keep up the good work on the videos! I think you are one of the best skating teachers out there, and such a beautiful skater! You make things so clear and break it down well. Too bad you couldn't post any old quad figure skating videos, I'd love to see that! Thanks again, sorry for the long comment. I'll keep watching! :)

I learned on inlines first and then I wanted to try quads. My first set of quads have a speed skating boot so, you have no ankle support but the transition from inlines to quads was pretty simple just needed to fine tune the trucks and i realized that with quads i needed to put more pressure on my heels instead of the balls of my feet like I did on inlines. Overall, I believe starting inlines first builds strong ankles because of how easily your ankle can roll side to side. Also, i can still turn on a dime and carve in and around all the kiddos at the rink just as easily with my quads as I did on inlines.

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. You're right! It's the quadrangular layout, the wheel size/width, the short plate, etc. what makes quads dangerous on rough surfaces. In the 70's and 80's people used to skate outdoors on quads but it was a problem because the surfaces are most of the time uneven. Inlines were the solution! Notice that Asha does skate outdoors on quads but she uses this specific spot in Brighton only, or in the disco. When she hits the road she rides inlines which are not only safer but also way faster.

derby skates / speed skates don’t have a raised heel, so i’ve seen some inline skaters recommend them if you’re transitioning from inlines to quads and you want a sort of similar feel (it won’t be completely the same of course - quads still have a shorter wheel base as you said, so less longitudinal stability). also, i wanted to mention that many newer quad skate models actually do have pretty good ankle support without being too stiff to provide enough bend, but i also still think inlines provide more ankle stability (because it is needed for inline skates - one company, flaneurz, even does not make their product, shoes made into detachable roller skates, in inline versions; only quads, because there is enough lateral stability in quads that it’s safe enough to make many regular shoe types into quad skates). anyway, just wanted to mention those things! loved seeing you wear a quad skate on one foot and an inline on the other! i didn’t think this was possible tbh haha. i will probably never try it myself either but it was amazing

Hi Asha! I was thinking the same thing as Sniffer about the wheels. It seems that even outdoor wheels on quads do not roll as smoothly over debris and rougher surfaces. Inlines are better for that in my experience.
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed if you think about the surface area touching the ground with 8quads wheels they “feel” every bump in the asphalt much more than the curved inline wheels which have much less wheel touching the ground. That’s why quads are soooo much slower.
@brookeardile6219
@brookeardile6219 4 жыл бұрын
The radius of the wheels also makes a big difference. A lot of urban and fitness inline skates have much larger wheels, which means the impact angle that detritus is hitting the wheel at is much lower, and so when you do hit a pebble or rough pavement it's easier to just roll over it. Quad wheels always seem tiny by comparison to the 90+ mm wheels of many inline skates.

@FranciscoTornay
@FranciscoTornay 4 жыл бұрын
They certainly do! Outdoor city skating on (most) inlines tends to be easier and smoother. Among inlines, the larger the wheels, the smoother the ride, to a point. I'm a inliner skater but I have seen quadders handling the city anyway. I guess it takes a bit of a different technique and more experience to make it work. You still need to master the inline technique for rough-surface riding anyway, it's just somewhat easier to handle on them

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. If your roads are rough then choose inlines. For dancing and tricks quads are better but they require a perfect surface, they are mostly used indoors. On the other hand, inlines were made for streets and they won't have any problem if they are rough, while you can stumble easily riding quads. You can still dance wearing inlines, it's just a little more difficult. I'd suggest that you choose one with 80mm wheels, because it's even harder if the wheels are big like the ones Asha has in this video.

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. The road and any rink, track or trail outside will always be better if you ride inlines, and the reason is simple: inlines were made for that! Any flaws on the road, debris, stones, etc. is a big deal riding quads, and you trip over. Quads were made thinking of artistic figure skating, and later were used for jam skating, hence they are used indoors on a perfect floor. Of course it's not a rule, and there are people who ride quads on the streets but that's not really the best option. I will save your video suggestion for Asha.

Dear Skatefresh team. Asha asked me for feedback on her guideline she recently gave me, how I can master one-leged toe wheelies. As long as I did not suffer from muscle ache too much, I practiced it for a while now. A scissor while riding on the front wheel on both sides, and gently shifting my weight from 50:50 to 60:40, 70:30 and so on, putting more and more weight on my front skate. I have to admit: These instructions from Asha worked very well for me. Of course I still cannot master one-legged front wheel wheelies like the professional slalom skaters, but I recognised, this procedure makes it much easier for me. But maybe I need to change my ball bearing of my right skate's front wheel. It seems to be not in good condition anymore, so when lifting up my left foot and starting a toe wheely only on my right leg, I immediately get slowed down, what makes me easily fall over forward.
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 3 жыл бұрын
That's great to hear that you can see and feel how this progression is the way to get to your goal of 1 wheel wheelies. Keep at it. Yes if you have a slow bearing on the front wheel that causes immediate slow down then this will make you lose balance so yes change it over with some of the back wheel bearings.

Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. Inlines with good ankle support will keep your ankles fine. Besides, laces and buckles must be adjusted properly. If you are having a medical issue with your ankles it may be good to strengthen them first. It's a fact that inlines are challenging for the ankles but if you keep concentration to avoid rocking the ankles in/out the good form will become second nature and it will not be challenging anymore. Quads may look more stable but if you need to commute I must tell you inlines are the way to go. Quads are prone to trip you up if the road is not smooth and sweet.

@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Inlines were made for roads/streets, quads for perfect indoor floors. Freestyle is a discipline which is basically a group of three things you do on skates: jumping, slides, and slalom tricks. You mostly do this stuff mixing it with some ride in between, hence the name freeskate or freeride that you may see as well. The freestyle skates differ from those made for fitness, aggressive, racing, hockey, and artistic. These skates are very popular, offer a great support and long-term durability. They are good for high jumps but they are not as sturdy as skates for aggressive that are made for ramps and rails. Due to their popularity many skaters wear freestyle skates for fitness, though they are not really appropriate for that because of their weight and boot hardness. Some models like the one shown here (Powerslide Tau) are made with light materials so they go fine for fitness too.

I've started doing ice skating and traditional inline skating in 2020. A number of basic things are transferable to each other, never tried the quads. I'm interested in inline figure skates (eg, sets based on the Snow White frames), mainly because you don't need to live close to an ice rink to practice regularly. But they're expensive, they don't seem very popular and I'm not sure how much similar they are to the ice blades.

Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. Figure inline skates are virtually the same as figure ice blades so you will feel pretty comfortable, but yeah, you're right they are expensive and not very popular. Another downside is that figure skating inlines are quite delicate so they are prone to get scratches easily. Besides, their wheels are small and therefore they require a very smooth surface.

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Yes, 3-turns and all figure skating elements are easier on quads because the stopper gives you the anchor needed to pivot. @SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Yes, there are many differences. For that reason Asha created an e-book you can find here skatefresh.com/product/ebook/ Quads are not easier than inlines and viceversa, both have certain difficulties, so choosing the type of skates actually concerns what you want to do with them. If you like to be outside in parks/squares/streets the choice is inlines but if you are more interested in dancing or figure skating kind of stuff then the choice would be quads. Quads are better if you stay indoors in a place where the floor is kept under good conditions, not really convenient outside where any crack/stone can trip you up. At the beginning most techniques are similar in both types. And no matter the type, what you have to look for in a skate is comfort, good ankle support, and a brake. The heel brake in inlines is perfectly fine as long as you know how to use it. It can be your best friend. It does work, even in slopes and Asha teaches how to use it in her online course for beginners skatefresh.com/product/how-to-skate-beginner-level-full-course/ You can also find a free lesson about the heel brake here skatefresh.com/product/how-to-stop-beginner-level/ in a course specific for beginner's stops. If you wear orthopedic inserts you definitely need those inside the skates too (I wear them myself). Your ankles will feel more stable with good skates well tied up and with the exercises Asha explains in her courses and also in her KZfaq channel. If you have a particular health condition where your ankles are unstable then maybe hard boot inlines will be better than the soft boot inlines. Quads are more stable sideways but you need to be careful because some quads come with a very weak ankle support, some models don't even have one.

@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. I see... You have figure skating inlines. Those are not really easy to find, though it's good they are gaining more exposure nowadays. Unfortunately, artistic skates (both inlines and quads) are quite delicate for streets, by nature. Even if we try to be careful in urban skating scratches happen easily, more than we actually want. We find rough surfaces, debris, curbs, etc. Besides, white gets dirty in a snap (most artistic skates for women are white). That front stopper gets worn out very quickly too, if you use it to stop on streets. You know that stopper is actually to do the jumps and spins. I wouldn't recommend to hit the road wearing artistic skates, even with Snow White plates and bigger wheels, though you may see some people doing it here and there. In my opinion it's not a good idea because the cost is too high in comparison. You can ride them on outdoors rinks, basketball courts, etc. That's for sure, but streets in general are messy and not regular. On the other hand, quads can be used on streets, yes, and Asha rides her quads along the promenade sometimes, but quads were actually made for roller disco and figure skating when you can roll on perfect floor without any crack. Lately, there are quad models that are a little more robust but I still think it's not the best choice due to the wheel size/width and the fact that the quadrangular configuration doesn't provide speed, instead it makes you prone to stumble easily. This is because the wheel base is shorter, while the inlines have a longer frame and that gives your more stability. In the 70's and 80's people wore quads on streets but then the inlines took over to solve those problems I mentioned.
@taniacordeiro979

@@SkatefreshVideos totally agree with all you said. I just find normal inlines very difficult to handle due to the higher boot that keeps my knees bent (I can’t manoeuvre them at all as I’m used to hiperextend my knees for leaning sideways and turns) and the missing higher heel. Oh well … decisions decisions. It would just be nice to be able to join some city rides with groups but I definitely don’t want to have to wrong skates for it as I am not a pro skater 😋

Asha, I notice the height of the quad you use in this video is less than the one I use. Across the ocean, we call yours a "Red Baron", except a Red Baron doesn't have a heel, as does yours. I don't have a Red Baron. The top four lace eyelets on my quad are metal teeth. I only use the bottom one, and I find that this tremendously improves maneuverability (I think a good thing) versus using all four. Essentially, the top three inches of my skate are useless, as any support this area of the skate can provide are purposely discarded by me. Maybe you can comment about these design options.

@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. To do spins and transitions like the ones you see in ice skating the best skates are the "figure skating inlines", however those skates are not really for beginners, they are mostly designed for ice skaters who want to do off-ice stuff or for people who already skate on regular inlines and want to try figure skating. The boots are the same used on ice and the ice blade is replaced by a line of 3 or 4 wheels that includes a front brake (resembling the toe pick). Those skates are very delicate and expensive. You can also do figure skating stuff on quads, which have a front stopper too, and I guess this would be your best option, since you won't need to spend a lot. You can still do spins and transitions on regular inlines, and certain advanced tuning will help, but techniques don't feel/look the same. On regular inlines some things like jumping will be impossible and some others are like "imitations" but are not really performed the same way. And that's the very reason why figure skating inlines exist. I believe that in your case quads for figure skating will be enough. Not all quads are made for figure skating, so be careful about that.
