Many Vietnamese communities in foreign countries, mostly former Eastern Bloc nations like Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, Czech, Slovakia,... speak Northern dialect because they are immigrants from Northern part of Vietnam during the war and by the time Vietnam was recovering its economy, sent a lot people abroad to work. You can also find lots of Vietnamese in South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand,... use Northern accent, too. So, the final answer is: it depends on which community you live in and what dialect they use.

As a southern born Vietnamese with wife from north, I realized both dialects are far more different in many way. I am clueless of words she tells me and jokes and many cultural phrases…. like we are American and British at times. But I learn a lot from her. I would say picking southern dialect to learn is a smart choice because 99.999999% of Vietnamese living in the US are southerners.

My entire Vietnamese community in America speaks with a Northern accent including the one I grew up in (New Orleans) and my mom's side of the family (Los Angeles). I think the problem is a bit overstated. Most of us have the same immigrant experience as refugees and had to learn to forge a new life in the U.S. together.

@@SDoesNotKnow Come visit Garden Grove or Westminster in Orange County. Well established Vietnamese community established in the 70s. Most people there hold on tightly and bitterly to memories of the war. Yes there are pockets of immigrants who are from the north in various parts of the US. But Orange County California is predominantly from miền nam. Not overstated here. The cờ ba sọc are everywhere and many of the immigrants don't feel the same unified experience with northerners that you describe. I'm not saying it's a good thing. But it is the way it is. As more and more of the older population is replaced with younger and more recent immigrants, these feelings will change.

I haven't started learning yet (other than the pronunciation), but I like to plan ahead when I start a new language. The courses I want to use as a beginner (such as Pimsleur) teach the northern dialect, but most italki tutors speak the southern dialect. This put me in a quandary, so I was going to learn southern and was looking for resources for beginners that teach southern. In fact, I bought your pronunciation course on Udemy during the Black Friday sale. But then I discovered that the Vietnamese speakers in my office actually speak northern. So I will probably learn northern.

Absolutely, you make the right decision, Learning northern Dialect and you have your northern colleagues around, that's a good thing because you can always practice with them . italki also has many teachers are from the north. When you learn some basic pronunciation , You will be aware of some sounds that just exist in the northern dialect , not southern, That would help you easily determine which teacher have the Northern or Southern dialect . I live in Hanoi (nearly 3 years now) so obviously I’m studying the northern accent. But when you compare it to the southern accent it’s still the more practical (and easier) one to learn. Pronunciation is key here, as the rules make much more sense in the north than they do down south. Just my own experience.

Hi I'm Korean who learning Vietnamese. I have interest in Huế and it's nearby regions so I fixed my pronunciation to Mid-Southern dialect and it was veeery hard to learn. I have a question I know southern people say final -n and -t as -ng and -k, ã and ả are pronunced as same but should I fix them too? I think those pronunciation difference does not affect much for understanding what I say. And some southern people also differenciate ã and ả, maintain -n and -t sounds.

Depending on where who are your surrounding Vietnamese, you can pick either Southern or Nothern Accent, the ending -n , and -t change to -ng, -c , and also the tone “mã” and mả are part of the dialect, You don’t need to fix if you learn the Southern Dialect Northerners have almost no difficulties understanding the Southerner and vice versa.

Very good info. just to add, Australia is Southern accent and Europe is actually Northern and especially in France due to the colony history. Ive been to Paris and to their "Chinatown" and the accent is mainly Northern. In the UK its mainly Northern too. Also from my experience of learning Vietnamese in that the resources of Rosetta Stone, Duolingo and Lonely planet phrase books and google translator they all use the Northern Accent too. I think also due to the fact that its the "official" accent with Hanoi being the capital i suspect, however there are more Southerners. My 2 cents i think Southern is easier due to the 1 less tone and is less confusing with the Northern when they pronounce the G, R, X, and D which all sounds similar to Z and that does my head in.

Ahh I think I will have to pick Southern because I want to live in Saigon someday or at least visit often..... but my family comes from all over Vietnam (and mainland Southeast Asia in general), so it's hard to pick just one! My maternal grandmother is from Hanoi, but grew up in Vientiane, Laos. My maternal grandfather's family is from Hue and surrounding areas in central Vietnam but he was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand, and primarily spoke Thai. My mother has never been to Vietnam, and grew up in Savannakhet, Laos, but was only taught Mandarin Chinese in school, spoke Lao with her friends, and Vietnamese/Lao at home. Both my paternal grandparents are from Saigon, but they are also both part Chinese and part Khmer and so their accents sound a bit different than other Southerners because they each grew up with three different languages....Khmer, Vietnamese, and Mandarin. My dad inherited their strange accents and also moved to the US at a young age so he has a bit of an American accent when speaking Vietnamese.

Southern Vietnamese dialect is not Khmer Vietnamese. Do you know how big is South Vietnam is, we also have many Southern Vietnamese dialects in south Vietnam and each one has their own accent in Vietnamese. Saigon accent used to be in standard Vietnamese Accents before. And I know that in the north side of Vietnam have many different places and each one speaks their own northern accent too right! We all Vietnamese. We speak the same language. The only difference between us it each place had its own dialect. For example, the English language is the official language of the UK (United kingdom). But it’s also the official language of many countries too as Australia, Canada, New Zealand... and one of the most speaking English country in North America call the U.S.A had their own accent in English too . But you can’t say to the person who just gets to know about the English language that they should learn the British’s accents because is the original English ,and it’s standard English.that is insane!!!!! Southern Vietnamese accent is fine, Saigon accents is find . For who just get to know about the Vietnamese language don’t let this stop you just learn the accents that you hear the most and you feel comfortable to speak .it gonna be find. When you get to the level that you can understand what native are talking about.you good than that is the time for you to model your accent.

I mean I'll just sound like an echo to this video which is a great topic to discuss by the way. If you live abroad with a vietnamese community you should just learn the southern dialect. I think the Vietnamese who live in the diaspora will be very impressed if you can speak southern Vietnamese because they know that Northern is considered the standard when foreigners learn vietnamese. I think lots of people who are never introduced to Vietnamese make a mistake of learning the Northern Accent because then they sound out of place in Vietnamese communities outside Vietnam. I'm not trying to bash the Northern accent. You should learn it if you live in Northern Vietnam for sure. But an important point is to make yourself AWARE of the two accents at least so you don't get caught like a deer in the headlights when speaking with a person of the other accent.

I'm familiar with with the other accents. I'm kind of glad to have learned the Hue Dialect because I think the accent is the most neutral out of the main ones which fits well with my American accent. The Southern accent for example requires a lot of effect on my part to lower my pitch a couple octaves. Hue definitely has its detriments though. People from other regions definitely have a bit of trouble understanding it sometimes. I always have to ask which particles/words do people normally use in certain situations because people from Hue use so pretty strange ones at times.

Wesley Tran False claimation.

@@huuduyvu9714 not a false claim since most oversea Vietnamese are southerners who are the first-wave immigrants during and after Vietnam War. Sure the Vietnamese communities in Eastern Europe are mostly from the north but those in Western Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia are from the south. Specifically in Asia, most of the Vietnamese in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines, Singapore and so on, are from the south during the first wave immigration. For example, Vietnamese war/political immigrants in Japan (from the south) are comprised of 70% of the total population. The Vietnamese population in South Korea are around 150,000. When you claim that they're mostly northerners, you're only half right. Most Vietnamese who come to SK via labor visa are northerners are second or third wave immigrants, but it's hard to believe that the number of workers is anywhere close to 150,000, let alone the report from SK which says around 40,000. I agree with you on that one should learn which accent depending on the community around the learner, but learning the southern accent while being in one of the mentioned countries is more favorable since the population is mostly southern. There're also immigration waves from North Vietnam to South Vietnam and the northerners not only learn the southern accent, which is a common thing, and integrate with the southerners, but also contribute to the dynamics of the southern dialect. However, the takeaway is learning either the southern or the northerner accent doesn't really matter since people can understand each other just fine.

Việt Nguyễn Vietnamese communities in Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Germany,... are quite diverse in origins. A lot of them speak Northern dialect and even Central be used widely comes waves of labor forces, students and brides from all over Vietnam. Your claim is not totally wrong, but mostly untrue about “population are mostly Southern”. France for example is a Western European country but you can hear Vietnameses there speak Northern dialect everywhere. And Northerners go down South still keep saying in North dialect, just add in and/or replace some North with South common words they use daily in communicating and “mix” the accent of both, limit to those words. Finally, all are Vietnamese, like British English and American English. You can still understand it not so hard, and if a foreigner feel “lost” when hearing another one, just write on the paper.

Thank you for your comment, Octavius! Yes, there are many Vietnamese people living in Southern US states like Texas and California. And as for which Vietnamese dialect to learn, it really depends on your personal preferences and goals. Northern Vietnamese is often considered the standard dialect and is widely spoken throughout Vietnam, while Southern Vietnamese has its own distinct pronunciation and vocabulary. Ultimately, the most important thing is to practice speaking with native speakers and immerse yourself in the language as much as possible.

I'm just going to give a counterpoint to a lot of the posts talking about the U.S. Though I do think the majority living in the U.S. do speak with the Southern accent, you have to be aware of the communities within the U.S. you're going to as well. It's a vast country with different communities. I grew up in New Orleans and the Viet-Am community there mostly speaks with the northern dialect because most of us are Catholic down here who moved south and then were sponsored by the various Catholic archdioceses to move to the U.S. to escape Communism. My family in Southern California also live in communities that speak with a Northern dialect. However, they are probably in a bubble within the Vietnamese-American bubble there. I think for the most part, you'll be fine in the U.S. since most people will understand you anyway even if you use different words. For example, my family uses a lot of Saigon vocabulary with the same Northern words interchangeably (like how English has a mix of old English and French Norman words for the same thing...like beef/cattle; shirt/blouse; etc.) and honestly, most second or third generation Vietnamese-American kids speak such a mix of English and Viet (using both Northern and Southern vocabulary) with American accents (we try hard) that it's all a hodgepodge.

There is only one written language of Vietnamese, thus reading it is all the same. For example, in California schools there teach written English and how to read it. Schools also in new York also teach how to read and write English. However they both have different accents because of the region. Similar with North VS south Vietnam, pronunciation will be different. It'll be like listening to an Irish person speaking English VS a Canadian speaking English. My recommendation is to not learn any ‘dialects’ at all. Vietnamese is a tonal language, there’s already rules in place, just pronounce it the way it’s spelt. Starting right off with a dialect is going to throw you off track and confused. For example, the many northerners pronounce the Vietnamese “gi” sound with a “d”, meanwhile, many southerners pronounce the “v” sound with a “gi”. Just start off with the basic building blocks and pronounce it the way it’s actually ‘supposed’ to be pronounced, then worry about accents and dialects later.

Thank you for your input, Anton. You make a valid point that Vietnamese is a tonal language, and it's important to focus on mastering the correct pronunciation of the basic building blocks before diving into the various dialects. However, it's also worth noting that learning a particular dialect can be useful for those who plan to live or work in a specific region of Vietnam where that dialect is dominant. It's all about finding the right balance and focusing on what will be most practical for your individual needs.

Hey, Hue Accent is very friendly, I have some friends who speak Hue Dialect, they are all great friends, I love them. If you just communicate to Hue People and expose yourself to Hue’s media, songs. It’s not a big problem. However, Hue Dialect is quite regional, and different from the standard like Northern and Southern Dialect. When someone who doest have chance to expose to Hue Dialect, they will have some hard time to understand at first. When I first meet my Hue friend, it’s a little difficult to understand. But Now I can normally do. Many Hue People try to adapt the Northern and Southern dialect when they live in these regions. You should start working on eigther Norhtern or Southern, You can take a look at this video to knomw more about the differenct between Hue and Southern dialect :D kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9OAeLOoxLDFg2Q.html Thank for your sharing :D

I love Hue accent but i think it's too difficult for you to learn Hue accent at the beginning stage , pick the North or the South first and then master the Hue accent later .

Learn Northern accent, more correct on the pronunciation of words and tones. You talk how you write. Learn it first and you can grasp the Southern accent later with not much difficulty

Except that that's not true: Southerners merge some sounds, and Northerners merge others. No Vietnamese dialect matches the written language exactly; all have diverged in one way or another. But thank you for sharing your linguistic chauvinism 🙏
