If you've always hesitated over painting chickens, why not give these super-easy hens a whirl? Starting with nothing more than a watermelon slice shape, you can add the details that make the chicken a hen. When you read a book or watch a video on beginning watercolor the advice given is often "do NOT use white or black in your watercolor work." I disagree with that, as I truly don't believe in rules, and I am going to show you when and why that advice does not always apply.
I start this video with a color mixing demo of how to make your own A. Gallo colors - Notturno, Indanthrone Blue and Harbor Blue are lovely Gallo colors that you can mimic if you follow my instructions. Easier than you think, and if you don't want to lash out on new paints, an ideal solution.

Please accept my deepest thanks for your beautiful and so insightful videos. I recently was dismissed from my job a few months ago and struggling to find work so decided that I need to find a way to supplement my income. I used to oil paint decades ago back in the late seventies and didn't enjoy the continuous clean-up required so gave it up. When I decided to give painting a go again, I looked to the watercolor medium for its simplicity and fell in love. While I have so much to learn, it has been a joy finding so many dedicated artists sharing their talents here on KZfaq. So different than it was back in the day. I know I need to find my own style and I've watched so very many hours of videos of amazingly talented painters and I'm like a kid in a candy store wanting to do it all. When I found your videos, I immediately knew that you are my kind of person with your style and ability to paint so beautifully while presenting easy to follow instructions. But, what I love the most is your insightful comments and how you share your thoughts and feelings that are so relatable. At times, when you express such poignant moments that are so personnel, I admire your bravery and love that you are able to turn them into positive thoughts through the painting. Thank you for articulating what I feel as I am sure many others do. It is so refreshing to watch your videos and come away feeling a bit better and brighter. You definitely are a shining star and I hope you will continue this channel for a long time. PS: This video inspired me to write this note as I envied your Gallo paints and choked at the price but you showing how to color combine to get the same results really cheered me up as did the chickens of course! Diane, I've never seen a chicken painted demonstrated so easily. The steps have now become so simple and easy for me to remember. Just paint a smile :) Easy to do because my chickens do make me smile! Thank you for another fantastic tutorial. I can't wait to paint this, which I plan on doing today! I love how you finished off your video showing the (hopefully) rainy sky and especially loved seeing some of your sweet chickens.

This is so perfect! I get so obsessed with sketching the perfect shape that I can literally spend an hour sketching three chickens. That really takes the fun out of painting.

Thank you so much. I never realised Lamp Black was such a good colour. Thank always felt puzzled by lamp blacks inclusion in sets. Now I can see it’s pretty helpful to achieve colours I really like. I’m pretty new to watercolour and have only used bright colours but actually prefer more moody and earthy colours. I have been just biding my time using brights till I learn enough to go off on my own.

We call them chooks in Australia. The term chicken is for the babies. I'm very fond of my chooks. Thank you for this fabulous tutorial. In fact, I have enjoyed all of your tutorials, so far.
