Grog shutting his eyes is an actual thing in-game - barbarians have the Reckless Attack option, where you drop all defence and roll two dice to hit instead of one. Does mean that any asshole trying to hit you gets to roll two dice as well, but you're a barbarian. You're built like a truck, you can generally take it while you're dishing it out.

If Vox Machina gets more than 2 seasons this episode could very important in the future.

Fun Fact: The spell that Delilah used on Scanlan is a real spell called Silence. Its used for this exact reason: most spells require you to say something to cast them. The reason it fades is because it requires concentration to maintain, and concentration can break when you take damage. Scanlan using it on her could be a weird Counterspell adaptation, or a reference to how Bards (Scanlan's class) have an insane variety of spells.

yeah Grog is the ultimate tank. Barbarians are just so hard to kill, they don't care about damage most of the time. And it's the class with the highest hit dice (wich determine your HP)

So for insight for why pike suddenly fizzled out in the real time of the games, the player who played pike lost connection throughout gh a skype call right at that moment.

During the games, it was actually Vex who got hit with that Death Ray (I believe that’s what it’s called). It did like 70 damage or something which can out right kill most characters at low levels. Not sure why they switched it the Keylith here, but it was still aimed at Vex before the hit. Not saying anything else for spoilers

the mind control shit isn't connected to the bites, when it's used in game the playerneeds to roll a d20 to see if he can resist it so sometimes it can last through the whole combat or fade instantly

Grog actually isn't the *ultimate* tank. All Barbarians can rage, which means lots of hit points and raging to absorb damage; but Beserkers like Grog are DPS. There are other primal paths that make a better tank, like Ancestral Guardian.

Funny how Delilah views her husband being killed as the _worst thing imaginable,_ yet she's _totally fine_ with taking away _other_ people's husbands, wives, _children, siblings, parents, etc._

OK, so here's what we know about the Briarwoods and the Whispered One so far: At some point in the past, Sylas was dying and a desperate Delilah was lead to some shack in the woods by whispers in her head. There she found the book that contained (among other things) a ritual that she used to turn Sylas into a vampire, thus saving his life, but now they are both indebted to the Whispered One. At some point after that the Briarwoods arrive in Whitestone and proceed to murder the ruling family there and take over. In this episode Delilah said this was something she did, because the Whispered one told her to. We also learned (last episode I think) that Dr Ripley found and restored the ziggurat that's underneath Whitestone as part of her contract with the Briarwoods. We also see Ripley ask Percy about 'the secret under Whitestone' in that torture flashback. So we can perhaps infer that the ziggurat (that's been there who knows how long and that the de Rolo's knew nothing about) was the real reason why the Whispered One wanted the Briarwoods to take over Whitestone, since it was appearantly necessary for this ritual, whatever it was. And speaking of the ritual: We know it was supposed to happed on the solstice, but that Vox Machina's arrival forced the Briarwoods to accelerate their plans and conduct the ritual early. We also know that the Whispered One supposedly wants to come to this plane and that that's easiest at the solstice, when the barrier between planes is thinnest. That brings us to the point we're at now in the show: Delilah uses her own blood as a sacrifice since at this point she doesn't really have any other options and (since Sylas just died) also not much left to lose. She asks the Whispered One to bring back Slyas (We don't know whether the original bargain was just about saving Sylas that one time or about keeping him alive indefinitely), but when he appears, he doesn't do that, in fact he doesn't do much of anything and just sort of disappears again (was he even actually there to begin with? Was it just an illusion or projection?). What's left in his place (and as far as we can tell the only effect this big bad ritual actually had) is a spinning black orb that's just sort of floating in space. So now we're left with some questions: Did the ritual work? Was it too early? Not enough blood? What was the ritual actually supposed to acomplish? Is the Whispered One back? And maybe most pressingly: What the hell is that spinning orb thingy?

The Whispered one already did bring Sylas back from the dead, when he turned him into a Vampire, he's under no obligation to do it again, it's not his fault the Delilah was unable to keep him alive past that point, plus they were early on the ritual to summon him.

The Whispered One didn't care enough about Silas and Delilah to betray them. Far as they explain, he'd have let them do what they wanted after they did their job for him. But he also doesn't care enough to help them out if they start to fail.

There are a couple of types of Barbarian subclasses. Some, like Grog are a mix of Defense and Attack. Whenever he goes into a rage, any normal/magical damage that is done from weapons/claws etc is halved. So like when Vax stabbed him, his dagger can do 1d6+3 damage. So a D6 die roll and 3 additional damage, so if he rolled a 6, he'd of done 9 damage normally, but with Grog it's always halved rounded down, so in that case it'd be 4 damage. He still takes full damage on certain other things. There is a class of Barbarian that takes half damage from *everything* except Psionic (Like mind powers) damage.

In the campaign they were like between levels 10-13 if I recall correctly, which means Grog is at 116-180 in max HP, so yeah, he can take quite a bit of damage. The specific spell that Keyleth used in that attack is legit called Sunbeam, which is lets the user shoot a 60ft straight line of sunlight. You should check out the video Critical Role put out called The Legend of the Design of The Legend of Vox Machina, its one of their 6 behind the scenes videos on the making of the show and that particular one goes into the character designs themselves. Honestly you should check out all 6 once youre done with the show because it sheds a lot of light on things.
