I rolled a nat 20 on an insight check that I thought was going to confirm my suspicions that the person I was talking to was misdirecting us. The last thing he said “Assumptions can be wrong.” So, my DM said, “Yes, he was telling the truth that assumptions can be wrong.”

@@briangronberg6507 depending on the situation, that could be pretty underwhelming and a little bit abusing from the side of the DM... if you critted on the insight, then you should get something sensible from it, otherwise he shouldn't have let you roll. Even something as vague as "he is definitely not telling you everything" could be ok, but give me _something_ .

28:48 First mention of The Door. 41:01 The Door opens. In my first campaign, I put a five-foot snake by the dungeon entrance. It was strictly for flavor, to show that the place was deserted and wild animals felt at home. It had no combat stats and started to slither away slowly. For the next half hour, the PCs meticulously planned, strategized, killed it with one blow, took its fangs, skinned it, and prepared it for cooking. You never know what's a throwaway encounter and what's not.

No joke. I put a merchant in a 1-shot so they at least had the opportunity of swapping out some gear they liked. The area was a minor warzone and he thought it was a good idea to sell weapons and armor at an upmark there. My players thought differently. Despite his hired guards and dispite his big ass crossbow hidden underneath his counter...
@ARR0WMANC3R

My party's initial quest was to escort a merchant's cart through a wooded area to a major city. They were naturally ambushed by bandits halfway through the journey, and the previously nameless NPC cart driver (who I named Hollind in the spur of the moment) defended the cart valiantly, but sadly was grievously injured during the fight. The party spent the rest of the session trying to heal him to no avail, and erected a gravestone that told the glorious tale of Hollind, the warrior who slaughtered an entire bandit army before succumbing to injuries. Much later, when they went back down the path, they discovered that an entire fort had been erected by the locals to protect the grave and give thanks to the one who had rid their land of bandits. It's amazing how much one minor detail or character thrown in at a whim can add to a campaign.

During that segment, I could tell they were having a blast and everybody was feeling in much higher spirits than if Orion were to be there. The whole time everybody was just laughing at how absurd it was that it's taking two-and-a-half men to open a door that's jammed shut and having a good time. Even in the last episode, everybody seemed much more relaxed at the table than the first 20 episodes and just wanted to have a good time.

3:46:32 So, as we've seen this episode, the symbol of the De Rolo's that Percy is planning to use as his calling card is a central circle flanked by two mirrored crescents. If you had a pepperbox pistol, in other words a series of connected cylinders, fired off one barrel to make it hot enough to scar, and then pressed the fired barrel into someone's flesh; it'd leave a central circle, flanked by two mirrored crescents. I feel like it work better as a series of scenes spaced throughout the episode. The three try to open the door and Scanlan fails after teleporting inside, then we see a messenger underground call out to Delilah at the ziggurat. She’s informed that preparations are going well. Then we see a sword being shoved through the door and Percy remarks that he’s never used that sword before. They all try to open it when Vax notices the window and jumps through. We cut to the outside of the hideout and then move inside where the others have a conversation about what to do if Percy starts to go nuts. Then we cut back to the three heaving, with the Unseen Servant helping as well. Finally, Scanlan casts Bigby’s Hand to open the door. The banshee drifts into the room and Scanlan’s like, “ah, shit.” Battle ensues, finishes, and the episode ends.

I always see SO many people dumping on Trinket, and Laura for her lack of using him. On others for not knowing their spells by heart, or for not knowing a monster from it's description, etc. I thought maybe someone might point out a couple things. Trinket was useful in Pathfinder. A tank. 5e turned him into a plushie. 60 hp. At this point, that makes him tissue paper, and his attacks aren't worth losing one of HER attacks. But the MAIN point of Trinket is simple, and I think most people, who see ranger companions as just another weapon, miss it. Trinket, just by BEING there makes the game more fun for Laura... and several others (Sam not included perhaps, although I think he'd miss the good natured ribbing he gives Laura over the "leave him at home" idea each time they leave). Isn't the point of the game to have fun? If thats the goal... doesn't Trinket fulfill his purpose? He's not just a tool for Laura. Not a weapon to be used and discarded. You may run YOUR ranger like that... she doesn't. This is a group of casual gamers... They are not min-maxed. They don't really know much about the mechanics (because they don't really CARE about mechanics). They just want to share a story and have fun.
@IonianModal
@IonianModal 5 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right! Until what you wrote, I had been very annoyed with Trinket and Laura's insistence on having him around. I had completely missed the positive effect he had on her playing.
@Mr061678
@Mr061678 5 жыл бұрын
i understand it makes the game more fun for Laura but you need to also understand the fun of one shouldn't interfere with the whole group all the time. Wasting a fly spell on a bear that will never attack or defend (he can still attack of opportunity) and having to use other spells to hide a bear on a stealth mission is depleting resources from your whole team whom she also berates for not haggling every purchase down or asking to leave the bear. It's not rude to ask your ranger to leave their bear (or shark as our ranger had one campaign) perfectly safe in the keep if you're about to scale a sheer cliffside or hide in a village full of undead with life-sense (like banshee's or something).
@Metrion77
@Metrion77 5 жыл бұрын
@@Mr061678 The goal of a DnD game is not to win or play efficiently. If it was, you'd start out at level 20 and the only enemy standing in your way of eternal victory is a half-dead mouse. You can't "waste" a spell or resources, as long as the group is having fun and being immersed. If they wanted the bear to do more in combat, they'd give it better weapons. If the DM wants a banshee to pop up, he doesn't need a bear as an excuse. Obviously, Vex is not your favorite person, but she's playing the game well, getting invested and having believable character faults, including a need to have her bear. It plays a role in the RP. If anyone in the party had complaints about the bear, they'd ask her to leave it behind.
@Mr061678
@Mr061678 5 жыл бұрын
@@Metrion77 not to be mean but i have a problem with 3 things in your paragraph response 1.)You can't "waste" a spell or resources, as long as the group is having fun and being immersed. If they wanted the bear to do more in combat, they'd give it better weapons. If the DM wants a banshee to pop up, he doesn't need a bear as an excuse.) for the you can't waste a spell. Waste verb 1.use or expend carelessly, extravagantly, or to no purpose. therefore using a spell to fly a non-combat unit for moral support is by definition a waste. they are extravagantly using a transport spell to transport a non-combat unit into battle. 2.) if the dm wants a enemy that can deny stealth to show up he doesn't need it to have any special ability if you have a giant bear with no stealth skills as almost anything can spot him. For the vex isn't my favorite person bit, i don't really like her in future episodes but telling someone you'll cut them if they don't bring your arbitrary handicap with seems like a bad player to me. After all if someone told me not to bring my crafting follower with me as we'll be going to fight a dragon i don't say "NO I WANT MY BLACKSMITH". Also "If anyone in the party had complaints about the bear, they'd ask her to leave it behind." doesn't Acanlan pretty much for 30 or so episodes say "can we leave trinket?" or "can we leave the bear"
@Metrion77
@Metrion77 5 жыл бұрын
@@Mr061678 Keep in mind that DnD is a unique game. If someone tried to pull a "I wanna bring my bear, so make sure to keep him healed" in diablo, they'd absolutely be a bad player. But DnD is not Diablo, or Skyrim, or Fable, or Dragon Age. DnD is not a hack'n'slash game with role-playing elements, it's a role-playing game with combat elements. 1.) It's not a waste if it's serving a purpose. Trinket may not play a role in combat, but he is a part of the role playing. The conflict between Scanlan and Vex is part of the game. The twins arguing over who gets to sleep on the bear is more valuable than if Trinket could oneshot a dragon. 2.) Anything can spot anyone. Again, DND is a role playing game, and combat is only supposed to add flavor to the story. If the DM didn't plan for combat to happen, it wouldn't matter if Vex glued spotlights and airhorns to the bear. And if the DM did plan for combat to happen, he doesn't need Trinket as an excuse to start a fight. He could say "you get the feeling these zombies have been modified to see through illusions" or something. 3.) SCANLAN always asks VEX to leave Trinket behind. SAM never asks LAURA to stop dragging the bear along.
