I'm 57, parties WERE THE NORM back then. I remember my God mom prepping for days for her garden parties. My mom n her hubby kept a NICE bar "just in case someone drops by". We were massively more social before cable TV.

Hi Former Chef from Johnson and Whales Uni . I majored in Culinary arts. I just want to mention that you are doing an awesome job . Furthermore, I really enjoy your segments on Vintage cooking. You are teaching a Chef with a BA degree. Things that I always wanted to learn I also have my fair share of Vintage cookbooks one I have dates back to 1780. And one from the 1900 s era and never opened them up, but now I am starting to . The 20s through the 70s were an awesome time for us in the 2000s to learn vintage cooking Keep up the awesome work and keep doing videos. If you have any questions on bread puddings and cakes from the Victorian area let me know I can help. Your videos are 100 percent awesome

It has no title when I was living in England my roommate had a huge home with a library filled with ancient books this book was mainly English game cooking it had no title or name it had handwritten recipes mostly with beef aspic and chicken aspic meals for the way they ate back then a lot of venison recipes stews and cooked vegetables my roommates mom and dad gave it to me when I was 25 there is a recipe for a cake that takes 25 eggs to make it's a vintage piece of history I enjoy your channel and the old American way of cooking. @@melissalambert7615

I grew up with this pie. My mom made it every year for Christmas. She made it without the candied fruit or coconut flakes, which was divine, and I can’t imagine having it like how it was intended. I really recommend that you make the pie again without the added stuff.

I remember having this when i was a little kid at a big potluck Christmas party but i think there were nuts in it too. It would be even better in little tart shells with a whole cherry on top. Really loving your channel❤

What a cute pie! Love coconut, don't love candied fruit. Ha, ha. One of my favorite cookbooks to use, Farmer's Journal Cookbook 1959. Also have revised 1972 copy. A must have for the vintage cookbook collector. Could watch you all day - but must do chores.

I remember this pie when I was a kid in the 1970s, except we didn't include coconut in our version. I remember being so excited by the colorful bits of candied fruit, and the delicious sweet white pie. This was nice to see, and brought back some great memories.

The fruit cake in small cans, looks like the Italian bread called Pantone. Definitely going to try the Christmas pie recipe. I’m not a fan of candied fruit, except for Glacé cherries! My son and myself can eat a whole bag of those things! Lol! I wonder if I toast the coconut if that would be just as good? I’m a big toasted coconut or nut fan. I agree with you, I’m also not a big fan of candied peel, would cut back on glacé cherries, and not add peel. I guess the good thing about this recipe you can always adjust it to your family’s likes or dislikes.

You've inspired me to look through my cookbook collection. I had to look up what "Oleo" is because it was in a lot of the recipes. I'm making a recipe from a 1949 Time cookbook. Some of the recipes used weird combinations. Interesting though! Merry Christmas.

Could you imagine if you left a meat and cheese potpourri bowl in the bathroom? I think it would send a very odd message to your guests. Okay, when you realized that the liquid base for the pie looked like your own skin, I just about fell over laughing. So you made a coconut cream pie basically? Looks pretty delicious! That's a good idea to work with different candied fruits to maybe take control of the colours and flavours going on, but actually the base of this seems like a good idea... aside pre-mixing your fruit and sugars way too early, of course. Can we talk about that gorgeous soup pot of yours? Is it actually vintage? If so, it looks like it's in amazing shape, and its so pretty! Hope you guys are having a wonderful Christmas and enjoying yourselves. Happy holidays Anna!

The base was similar to a coconut cream pie, just a bit more spongy/jiggly from the gelatin. I would definitely try this one again! The pot is vintage! My parents found a matching set at a flea market years ago for $15 (gasp!). They always seem to have magic flea market luck! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and holiday season!

Sounds like their take on Aunt Bee's Nesselrode Pie...if you dont want your candied fruit to bleed, drain well, coat in powdered sugar and shake off excess (do this right before you use it) and dont use a mixer to incorporate the fruit. Vintage recipes are fun but a lot of them are hit or miss with very little gray area. I remember making a chestnut cheesecake that sounded great, smelled wonderful, and tasted not so great, so yeah it is fun to experiment, lol!😊
