Golden the company have some research done on the subject of different white paints's flexibility showing that pure titanium white is extremely flexible that won't crack at all even after bend over a very thin stick, which is very impressive. And the paint tinted with zinc cracks easily. Zinc white reacts with oil to produce soap and wraps oil inside thus oxidization is prevented therefore the cracking happening.

What it looks like is that the titanium white is cooler (bluish appearance) and de-saturates the other color when tinting. The lead white instead appears warmer (orangey appearance), but more than that I'd think it's that it does not de-saturate the other color when tinting.

Titanium white is actually the lightest hue of blue in the world. Is why I try to never use it except for extreme hi-lights and limited opaque mixes of light blues or pinks. It will always slightly change the hue because it is a blue color. Lead white leans a tiny bit warm. Basically, the lightest yellow in the world. Flake white is more neutral but more opaque as other Titaniums. I use a lot of Barite white for making my tints. It will never change the hue whatsoever, lightens the color up. It comes out of the tube nasty looking is why I think most folks shy away. You can use as much as you need to lighten any hue and not worry about it changing the hue and it's cheap. It will cause opaque colors to become more transparent for water and sky or sun shining through the backside of an object such as tree foliage or an human ear. You can create better mid-tone shadows with it because shadows are not objects. Rather they are a floating tone of light over surfaces. I use to only use titanium white for everything. It drove me crazy, turning my Prussian blue to an intense color.

The 'chalky' appearance of tints made with titanium white is due to the blue spectral response of titanium dioxide. In other words, titanium white reflects more of the blue light in the visible light spectrum than does lead white. This is also why it appears to be a brighter white than lead white. The higher refractive index of titanium white (R.I. 2.72) compared to lead white (R.I. 2.01) also means it has high covering or hiding power, making it more opaque. This is a disadvantage for most artists since it easily overpowers many colors.

Well, lead white as a warm white it'd probably grey greens and purples/violetes meanwhile the titanium white is cool and it'll grey out any orangy warm color,,, i add back some pure yellow/orange to fix that up while i try lighten up a color unless its convinient for my painting,,,
@walcottfineart5088

The differences in the whites aren't really enough to dull the colors. The warm/cool aspect is very very subtle. However I do know many artists who use both kind of white for different purposes. Thanks for watching! :)

One correction. I have heard that lead can get absorbed through the skin, if it is mixed with turpentine. Mineral spirits will not do this, but the organic nature of natural turpentine will. I not certain how to verify this, but it is worth being a little extra careful, if you use turpentine with lead white.
@walcottfineart5088

Jason, have you tried Michael Harding's Stack Lead White? I just got a tube, but have yet to use it. Also, I would consider not using music throughout your videos. I have this complaint about so many similar demos. Music can be very distracting and adds absolutely nothing to a video whose sole purpose is to relay information. it's simply not needed. I enjoy the tips you present and that's all you need to do. But that's just my opinion.

Started using the stack white and it's quite special. I've never used anything quite like it before. Harding formulated it to replicate the whites of Rembrandt and it actually has those qualities. It is incredibly dense, but with a little medium it has a beautiful flow and a truly unique texture.

Thanks for the information! I admire those who are courageous enough to make their own paint! I would also suggest that people weigh the cost savings of making your own against the convenience and ease of ready made paint. Especially with Lead White since the dry pigment could be toxic if you breathe it accidently. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks: you are very good and educational. I read something interesting: Titanium white expands and contracts nearly 4 times that of lead white. My conclusion: lead white oil paint must be very Archival. I also noted: some people are making their own lead white with: lead and horse manure. Also: Lead white no. 2 is made with walnut oil (less yellow?).

Lead White oil paint is VERY archival! Lead is actually one of the best things you can add to an oil painting to make it last longer. Lead helps polymers remain flexible and not turn brittle over time...for this same reason small amounts are added to electrical cord covers to keep them from cracking as they age. It will have the same effect on an oil paint layer. Thanks for watching! :)

Another thing to say about titanium white is that being an inert pigment (like calcium carbonate, for instance) it doesn't bound properly with the oil, and as a consequence the oil will tend to move up the surface. This leads inevitably to a fairly strong yellowing of the paint. And a great thing about lead white is that it actually doesn't darken when mixed with cadmiums, ultramarine blu, genuine vermillion and yolk - several authors wrongly suggested that in the past 200 years or so. There's plenty of literature on the subject, and I've done my own tests too (for what it's worth).

Because is a method to measure what we see with our eyes- there are multiple vanishing points- when something is tilted to be non parallel from the ground it will vanish to a imaginary vanishing point- basically the horizon gets carried with the XYZ of the object- I think those two things you mention have nothing to do with each other in that sense.

Thanks for the comment! As far as I know there isn't any reaction between lead and any modern pigments. It's a pretty stable color. There are a few circumstances in which reactions can occur but they are all conditions which paintings wouldn't normally be exposed to. It has nothing to do with the mixing of colors.

I use zinc white, because it is better for mixing, when it's semi transparent. Red stays Red and doesn't become pink. Titanium white makes colors too milky. So I use it only some times. Lead white is forbidden in Europe because it's toxic. It is not good for the environment. There is another white from Schmincke, called Kremser white, that simulates lead white.

I would try to avoid Zinc White if possible. It has shown to be unstable over the long term and can cause cracking. It's best to use a Flake White imitation if you can't get the real thing. My favorite is Winsor & Newton's "Flake White Hue". Thanks for watching! :)

does merely using less titanium white result in the same effect as using more flake white? (Ex: trying mixing the same color with each of the two whites by adding various amounts until It's are the same color). Or are there special properties that make the two shades not equal?

Thanks for watching and great question! No, it is not simply a matter tinting strength. Titanium White is very opaque and most Titanium Whites on the market are cut down with about 10-15% Zinc White to make them more usable. Flake White has unique properties that Titanium just doesn't. It has a warmth and translucency to it that can't be mimicked. :)

Hi Jason, great video as always! Say I have a question, as I bought a set of Old Holland oil paints, it came with both Titanium and Zinc white. Would it be ok to mix just a little of the Zinc white to your Titanium white to make the Titanium white less opaque , or would you just totally not use the Zinc white? Thanks in advance!
@walcottfineart5088
@walcottfineart5088 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! There is some debate about whether any zinc at all is terrible or whether below a certain percentage is OK. Some say 15% or less is fine, others say none at all. It's really up to each artist to decide what they are comfortable with. If you are going to mix the Zinc White with the Titanium White, I would also add some linseed oil to the mix to increase the film's durability or a medium that adds oil to the paint. Thank for watching!

Great videos! Very informative! Could you comment on the toxicity of Titanium white? Especially that of Winsor and Newton, which contains PW6 and PW4. Thanks for watching! I'm a little confused by your question. Titanium White (PW6) is not known to have any toxicity. If the tube contains Lead, then that would make it a Lead White (aka Cremnitz White), but that is PW1. Is it possible that the label was put on that tube by mistake? PW4 is Zinc White (also non toxic) which is sometimes added to Titanium to improve its optical qualities.

@@walcottfineart5088 That was my understanding too; however, upon delivery of a tube of Winsor and Newton Titanium White Artists' Oil, I noticed the label on the back. I went to the Winsor and Newton website to check the MSDS and it says the same thing. I can't seem to find an answer as to where the toxicity is coming from.
