Heres a tip, after everything’s done and you set the skull out to dry once its slightly dry but still pliable, take a qtip soaked in super glue pinch the nose bones back together and run the qtip underneath the nose bones in the nasal cavity. Hold for a minute or so. Makes for a super clean look rather than having split nose bones. Granted not all split but when they do its an easy fix.

@WHITEBONE 2 жыл бұрын
Love it. Thank you for that.
@nickwojieck
@nickwojieck 2 жыл бұрын
I bypass this step by just running a ziptie and wrap it around the nose so the bones are tight and then dry like normal. In NY it is usually too cold and cloudy to dry outside so I bring them in front of the gas fireplace. They dry bright white and the bones are tight
@TexasSmoking
@TexasSmoking 2 жыл бұрын
@@nickwojieck thats true but the only thing holding those nose bones together is cartilage and it gets blown out in the power washing step. If not it drys yellow from the color batch. Not all deer but most, if you do euros in numbers you will come across this. Usually older deer nose bones wont be an issue

I've been doing skulls now for 9 years now, first for fun then as a small business. I used to really love doing it but has turned into more of a "job" last few years and not enjoying so much. This video alone has inspired me to get excited about it again. And also just a few of your videos I have learned SO much from you and I'm very grateful. Thank you.

Just wanna thank you and say I've been watching you for a long time. I got my second buck ever this year and tried your method to do the mount and I absolutely love how it came out. Bright and white, looks great and I'll cherish the memories of that buck forever. It is my first euro and my first DIY mount, so I was a bit nervous before starting but your process works! Also, no nasal cavity and ear buds is definitely the way to go. Thanks for all of your videos, they've helped me out a ton!

I’ve been doing mine since I shot my first buck, and I do all of my buddies, and I have always pulled the sinus cavity’s out of them, and I take a saw that I jerry rigged so I can cut a section out underneath where the spinal cord comes out cuz I’ve always had problems with the brain membrain getting stuck. But yeah I agree, a clean skull is %100 the goal, had a fly land in one of mine before and that was not a fun time. Like you said, it's possible. But it takes time. I do warm macerating. I have a soup pot that stays at 60 degree's Celsius. The pot goes on during the day and off during the night. Just a mix of water and some sort of laundry detergent. I refill the water with a fresh batch once in the process and I spray the skull in-between. It all comes out eventually, leaving the Nasal intact. but it does take about 3 days of work.

Which Aquasilk do you use as the whitener? There's sanitizer, peroxide, and non chloride shock. In some of your older videos, you used the dioxygen clear liquid developer 40% as the whitener? Which would you recommend? I've seen some videos where they brush on the creme developer. Just trying to figure out the best way without causing damage to the skulls. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Enjoy your videos very much! Very informative and fun to watch. Enjoyed the custom Elk skull mount video.

Really great material! Been watching your channel for awhile now, very informal. I just did a mule deer for a client. His son had shot it a few seasons ago and the skin basically mummified to the skull. I Soaked it in dawn water for a week and boiled and bleached today (40% clear peroxide)However most of the skull did not whiten and has off colors of brown and grey stains, almost like the bone completely absorbed all the grease/oils. Any trick to get the deep grease out or what i can do to whiten it more? The darker stains are on the nasal bridge, i have checked the whole skull over to make sure there is no meat or tissue to be seen. I’ve also removed all the sinus. Thank you again for all the content!

Serious question here. Are you ever concerned about getting a face full of CWD positive brain when you're spraying out your skulls? Gotta be honest, I've become fairly concerned about it with the last few skulls I've done. None of the skulls I've done (1 elk, 3 deer) in the last year were tested for CWD, so who knows.

Just a quick question does KZfaq not allow you to show how to skin a dear head out? I have a video coming out soon where I do it for my euro project and do t want a strike. Also I have excellent success cleaning the nasal bones. I get them 100% but I use the maceration method and it takes 6 months. Ear buds need to come out though no matter what IMO. Also if you do the boil right you can pull the cartilage out of the nasal cavity with one pull. Not sure what the trick to it is but a taxidermy buddy of mine that uses the boil method can do it consistently not sure if it’s time in the boil or temperature but he is quite successful doing it. Love these videos look forward to more!

Question. I skinned & fleshed a whitetail skull last night that I’m doing for a friend . I usually skin, flesh, bag, and freeze mine the same day I harvest them, and then do everything I’ve accumulated all at once after the season ends. I want to do this particular one sooner, but I’d rather hunt this week. What’s the best way to store it at room temperature short term to keep any residual surface oil from absorbing into the bone? Is that even an issue to worry about?

Quick question. As a general rule of thumb after the skull is clean.. 10 mins in the color batch? I think I've heard you say this before but I'm just verifying. I did three skulls yesterday and I think I over did it in the color batch. They didn't seem as bright white as I wanted but They seemed to continue to whiten as they dried overnight.

I am currently working on my first deer skull, which I found partially decomposed on my property. After two months of natural outdoor decomp, one month of water maceration, and hours of scrubbing and rinsing, I realized I needed to remove the nasal bones because there were dead bugs that I couldn't remove any other way. My question is: how do I know when the skull is fully degreased and ready for display? I've done about 3 weeks of dish soap and water degreasing at 80-90 degrees and 48 hours of peroxide whitening. It looks fantastic and the water is clear, but there are still some yellow spots under the jaw and on the crown.
@thelonesomecricket9629
@thelonesomecricket9629 Жыл бұрын
Those yellow spots could be stains since you found it decomposing, but they could be grease. It can be really hard to tell but I think maybe do an acetone soak then heated degreasing and see if it goes away
