The familiarity you sense is likely Led Zeppelin .. they were widely criticized for being derivative of Zep (vocally and musically) .. but that shouldn't detract from this being an absolute banger. It was a *massive* hit. Sykes absolutely melts faces on this solo.

I was a huge thrash metal fan by 1987, so I'm hit or miss on much of the hair metal stuff (which Whitesnake got lumped into around this time). This is one of those songs with crossover appeal, along with the album in general. This song is a masterpiece! It isn't a hodgepodge of songs put together that were done better by someone else later, it was written this way probably for the video. The video was also killer and perfectly encapsulates the flamboyant times of hair metal on MTV in 1987. The pauses that occur in the first half of the song are part of the build up and probably helped for the scene changes on the video. After the building up, mid song there are a couple of crescendo moments and Ryan was talking over both of them, then it just rocks you for the rest of the song. This song sounds best to me when I'm listening while driving at night, especially after a hard days work. I can appreciate the honesty and would like to see more reactions that are honest, even negative. Some songs take a few listens to pick up on the flow. This song flows absolutely perfectly, unfortunately the band couldn't get their act together, they could have gone much, much farther.

This song is still badass today. There's some 80's cheese elements to it, like you said, but it in no way does it overshadow or take away from how good this song is. The guitar playing, Coverdale's voice, that classical sounding cello breakdown in the middle of the song. Everything about it is perfection.

The connection with Whitesnake was always to Led Zeppelin though. That's one major thing they screw up really. And it's sad they don't understand Led Zeppelin. They need to listen to a lot more Led Zeppelin because those are the top tier, no different as far as game changers in music like Black Sabbath. They talk about Deep Purple a lot but still Zeppelin did more or at least equaled Deep Purple in the genre. It is possible that Zeppelin is a hard rock band and not a metal band but they can get very heavy.

In a time when 99% of the reaction channels on KZfaq are just nodding along to the song and then saying "that sure was a thing, anyway hit that like button", I definitely appreciate a channel that gives honest feedback. It's why I've been subbed to these guys for so long. This one was hard to take though, it's one of the songs that got 13-year-old me into rock music. I agree it's over-produced and a lot of otherwise good 80s music does have that "cheese" factor. It's probably the era that's hardest to judge objectively. Late 70s/early 80s Whitesnake might sound a bit more "authentic" if they ever get a second chance.

Yeah these guys bring me back to when i heard these songs for the first time , they're definitely genuine with their reactions and you can tell when they really enjoy something. Plus they have come a long way from when they first starting giving their opinions , they actually critique the music correctly. I think i was around 21 when this came out , this was a little to polished for me but i still liked it. Enjoy many of your reviews. But I think you missed this one. Coverdale and Sykes nailed this song. Admittedly, they weren't breaking any new ground. Far from it, they were playing in the field cleared by Zeppelin. That's the familiarity you caught. But Coverdale was cut from the same cloth as Plant, with the same influences, so its not surprising they sound similar. After leaving Deep Purple, Coverdale started Whitesnake in the late 70s. They were primarily a blues based rock band. It wasn't until the 1987 album that Coverdale and Whitesnake made a concerted effort to win over the U.S market with a more MTV friendly look and sound. Years later, Coverdale and Jimmy Page paired up for an underrated album together.

@@mickward7769 Sure and because hip hop and or rap is just boom - there ya go. Nothing progressive about it. It takes a little patience to appreciate classic and progressive rock and metal. These guys rated more Metallica and Megadeth just jumping right in but Whitesnake is different and so is Zeppelin. really they are hard rock bands, and for that foundation it's not just Aerosmith and Deep Purple. It's Led Zeppelin and they simply did not react to enough Zeppelin tunes. Zeppelin was a game changer and these guys missed it.

@metalmike570 I agree. I'm not hating on anyone, but rap and hip-hop is pretty basic and nowhere near the talent of rock and metal. Especially nowadays with the auto tune and computers, basically making all the music. The Rock bands with playing actual instruments and composing the songs take a lot more talent, in my opinion.

John Sykes played the guitar on this album. Yes, it was very commercial, but Sykes' guitar playing is damn good. He actually plays the guitar with a bow, a la Jimmy Page. Sykes also played with Thin Lizzy on the phenomenon "Thunder and Lightning" album as well as with the Tygers of Pan Tang. Check out some earlier Whitesnake, like "Slow and Easy". Very bluesy.

I completely understand how you feel. If it's not your flavor, it's not your flavor. Especially at your current ages. This song came out in 1987. I loved the song at the time. I was almost 20, and fairly immature. So this was the shit for most everyone who liked rock back then. It's more nostalgic to me now. Not in my Playlist but would let it play if it comes on the radio. Brings back memories of the time more than love for the song. Keep up the reactions. I'm ready for more.

Sykes is such an amazing guitarist. Vibrato as wide as the grand canyon, blazing speed, and an instantly recognizable sound. But the band that recorded this isn't the touring band. The band that Dave put together for this tour was supposedly his dream band of all heavy hitters. I saw them on this tour twice and they were phenomenal. I also saw them on the follow up tour with Steve Vai and that too was amazing. Hey, you guys should check out and possibly do a reaction video of Steve Vai's "Teeth of the Hydra". But you would need to watch the video to do the reaction. His hydra guitar is triple-necked, with a half fretless 12 string, a 7 string with a tremelo, a half fretless bass, and 13 sympathetically resonating harp strings, and additionally some crazy onboard effects....and he plays the whole damn thing at once. It's SICK! Check it out at least.

When George talks about "Walk This Way" I'm not sure if he's talking about the original or the version with Run DMC. I think it's important to remember, it was solely an Aerosmith song first and then Run DMC covered it with Aerosmith on the assist around the same time that MTV was still a newborn baby of a channel. It worked out well for both band and group and was a big part of hip-hop establishing it's commercial viability early on. I know its probably the first time this whiteboy heard a hip hop track in his life and I can't be alone. Even if you don't like it sonically, it should be appreciated for the impact the song had.
