Look I will stay positive. Use big bore high expansion bullets. Neck shots are rewarding cos you get clean meat, sill a very difficult shot. You can get a CVA scout in 450 Bushmaster or Ruger American or a Savage if you want. First one is a single shot. But one well placed shot is all you need. Again top of the neck is good so is slightly above shoulders and always a profile/broadside shot. You can do any area along that neck but you got to know exactly where those arteries run and you need a gun sighted to a one hole group at 25 yards. 30-30/45-70/450 bushmaster/458 SOCOM/10mm/ even 44 Magnum. But no small caliber.

Your gonna tell me that 100 percent of your shots on animals have been 100 percent accurate? Hell i don't agree with the neck shot because of how easy it is to mess up. But nobody is perfect. And if you say you are then your a liar. Hell I hit a deer in the spine at 50 yds. Scope wasn't focused in at close range so I didn't see the small tree limb in the way. He dropped dead. But it was dumb luck that he did. If you actually do a lot of hunting stuff like this will happen. We all hate it but no one is perfect. Rag him for making a bad shot but there is no need to talk shit like he did something that you could have done just as easily. Most of us just don't film our fuck ups.

I get the whole “not wasting meat thing” but if we’re being honest all you save is some rib meat. So you risk an in-humane shot on a deer just to save a little bit of burger? I don’t get it really. Especially on rutting buck with the large, puffed out necks that can cause you to shoot too low or too high, in anticipation of the spine or esophagus appearing higher or lower than it actually is. I mean if you are really truly skilled with your firearm, go ahead and save your rib meat. If you are just good or ok or even really good, go for the lungs, that’s my advice to you. Happy hunting all!!!

As a lifelong hunter, I know sometimes a bad shot is made for some unknown reason, or because something unplanned happened. When I saw that buck standing quartered to, I was thinking surely he won't take that shot......but he did! I would have waited for that deer to present a vital shot, because there was plenty of time. That was just a bad judgement call, and an unethical shot in my opinion. Next time calm down and wait for a clean shot. @Mikemurphy89234 жыл бұрын
I agree that was a terrible neck shot. Although all my hunting career I've only neck shot deer and never had any survive the shot. They drop and that's that. So in sense a neck shot is not unethical if you properly shoot in the neck it's a quicker kill than a heart shot.
@TheZombieburner4 жыл бұрын
Well, assuming you know how to neck shoot (I do, these lads don't.), it's actually very easy and kills immediately. I usually aim for the neck right where it meets the skull, never had one walk yet. It's technically not shooting the "neck", you're actually aiming for the SPINE. It's easy, like I said, these people just don't know how to do it. You can't just shoot anywhere on the neck, you need to aim for where the spinal column is, hence why I shoot where I shoot, that's a very consistent spot.

@Zombieburner, spot on! I always neck/spine shoot. Saves meat! Never had a deer take a single step. Spine shooting is not unethical. It's actually the most ethical way to kill a deer. Not knowing exactly where your weapon is going to hit, like this video, is unethical.

I'm 62 and been hunting whitetail deer in South Texas for over 50yrs. Took my first 11 point buck at 9yrs old. All my shots have been little above shoulder closer to the heart. Never in my life or friends of mine do we ever shoot at the neck. Plus most of our shots are over 200 plus yards, taking a chance with a neck shot and miss or not hit them right is not an option, plus I don't use deer blinds I sit next to sendero's.

Are you serious old timer ? I shoot all my does in the head or neck. Doesn't waste meat. I've killed 200 deer with neck shots. Hit the bone there dead before they hit the ground. Head shots are my favorite. Typically I use a .243 on deer. 100 yards is max for head shots and 200 is max distance for neck shots. I prefer head shots but if they won't stop ... I pop the neck bone. I killed a running mule deer at 80 yards one time. Buck was running strait away in tall sage brush, I blew his rack off in 2 pieces with a head shot. (.300wsm) you can't eat horns.

looks like your typical pay to hunt place if you ask me. judging by the fence and huge abundance of deer and the piss poor shot anyways. also the chances of that deer surviving that shot to the neck is very slim in my opinion. infection would most definitely take over, especially in a wound from a gun shot like that. this could easily be a different buck from the same blood line but i highly doubt it survived a wound like that.

The neck contrary to what many people think is a poor place to intentionally hit an animal. Unless you hit a main artery, that animal can and will likely run for a while. Depending on your bullet construction, it may not have had enough time to expand properly either. Way better off aiming at the heart/lung region and wait for him to present a better shot.

If you use a bullet that's fast enough with enough mass and expansion it does not matter where you hit on the neck. Fragmenting bullets are best for neck shots. My bet is that they were using something like a Barnes copper bullet here.

My favorite shot for deer is slightly quartering to/quartering to with the shot placed at the front "crease" of the shoulder center mass of body. It breaks the humerus, and the spine is near center body and at its lowest point in the body there and the heart, aorta, and lungs are in line with the bullet and its fragments depending on what type bullet you use. I have never had a deer do anything but drop straight down with this quartering to shot, and I like that most of any fragmentation of lead will be headed into/toward an area of the body that I won't be eating other than the heart. Until I moved out west, I never paid attention to bullet types and what they are designed to do at different distances, because 99% of my shots were inside of 100 yards in the SE. Now that I'm out here trying to figure out the best cartridge and bullet combo for long range elk and mule deer, I'm realizing that the bullets for this purpose are designed to fragment out at long distances and at the typical slower impact speeds at those long distances. I'm reading that these bullets (bergers for ex) will not fragment well when punching through soft tissue at the high velocities they are traveling closer to the muzzle and can and will punch a hole straight through at 50 out to even 200 yards. They are not designed to mushroom and transfer that energy like the hunting rounds I grew up shooting back east. If that bullet mushroomed much at all, the hydrostatic shock should have disrupted its spinal column communication and put that deer down right there. Looks to me like the hunter was using a bullet designed for long range hunting and designed to fragment and not to classically mushroom...and by the time it was starting to open up and fragment, it was clearing the opposite side of the neck expending majority of its energy in the superficial exit wound and ground behind the deer. There was enough tissue/muscle damage at the exit wound to bleed pretty good, but not enough blood loss to kill it. Reminds me of deer shot with a broadhead in front leg muscle only...enough blood to follow with confidence for a mile only to be disappointed in the end. What kind of bullet was being used? I take neck shots sometimes with my 270 core-lokts, but if this is a similar bullet, I may rethink future neck shots.
