I planned two acres of brassicas using this method first food plot looks great germination the second one has got some holes where the ground isn’t level I believe the rain washed the seed off will be filling in the holes with winter rye, come mid September. Just wanted to say that this method works by spraying multiple times and seeding right on the ground. Thanks Jeff for all the information that you make.

Morning. I am heading to the property this morning to check on things. We planted Brassica in mid July, and one day they where there and the next our small plot was hit pretty hard. Our deer did not wait a bit! Wiped out most of the plots and hammered the corn good too. We are in a thick wooded area with little AG around. Any plot is just being blown out early and might be planted late again. Next year we are going to have to increase acreage to ensure there is enough to go around lol.

Great comments on Brassica. We first planted a Brassica mix in Western WI in 1994. The deer did not touch it for the first two years of planting it. It was foreign to them and as you know it has a very pungent order...they had just never encountered it before. It took them two years to get accustom to it and then they devoured it, my advice is to stick with it. After years of trial and error, we also found it was best to plant in the late summer for a fall crop. We found, even though planting in the spring gave us a little more volume, it was very weedy and matured too early. Just our experience over the years. Bob

Planted 3 Acer's today with oats and radish. 100 lbs oats to Acer and 8 lbs radish to Acer. Our winter last wasn't harsh in Ky so my oats last grew this spring to seed out. Lightly broke ground today before planting. Got a 20 min or so rain shower on them. Hopefully see them growing in few weeks. I've had good luck planting this mix. My neighbors are trying it this year in woods on 1/4 Acer plots or less. Got feeling the deer will eat there's up as there no ag field on there property like ours. We have 20 Acer's standing corn on our property as well.

I spread the buckwheat on top of the untilled ground and then once it reached maturity spread the brassica seed in the standing buckwheat and then knocked it over with my 4 wheeler tires. Hey Jeff. For starters, love your videos man. Super helpful for this new food plotter. I just bought an Earthway spreader like yours. Dumb question, but how do you put the spreader on 1.5 or 1.25 setting? I'd have to look again, but it looks like mine just has settings 1, 2, 3, etc. How do you do small increments like that? Also, if I am doing a small plot thats smaller than half acre, do you calculate how much seed to put in the spreader, or do you just focus more on the seed rate/setting and do an even spread. FWIW, I am planting the NW Sweet Feast Blend. Thanks Jeff!

I hunt western ky and my lease is a mix of ag and woods and have just started aggressive food plots this year , this is the first year of corn on our land and are the only corn within miles. We have multiple 130/140 and one 160 on camera for the first time ever and we attributed that to the corn , we are feeling like planting corn in 50% in our plots next year because beans never have produced these results and we also feel the standing corn will provide more stem count . Do you recommend the corn left standing in ag areas to help hold bucks in November and December? Thanks

Jeff, I’ve been watching your videos on all topics over the last couple years but I am hyper focused on the food plot instructions lately. This year I was able to follow your instructions with the early spring and summer sprayings to get the weed control accomplished and also planted the buckwheat but I was late getting to my fields because of restrictions on movement due to COVID-19. Nonetheless, I had a nice field of buckwheat by Labor Day week and I then planted brassicas, clover, tillage radish (all very lightly) and then spread the winter rye over it, then crushed the buckwheat and hit it with the glyphosate all on 4 September. I had to do it all together because it is impossible for me to get to my land every month. I feel confident that the rye will come in nice but what do you think about the brassicas chances of viability? Also, I’ve watched several videos concerning the crop rotation but I still am not sure what you do with the rye in the spring time. Do you hit it with the glyphosate and 24D and then crush it with the cultipacker as you do with the buckwheat?

Whats your thoughts on Forage brassicas that produce massive tops and smaller tubers? I see a lot of the local seed distributors have those in the mixes but the price for a forage brassica is about three times as much as say purple tops or tillage radishes which are around $ 2.25 per pound in my area. I’m wondering if i should of waited another couple of weeks before i planted, even thought the instruction say July 15 - August 20. I hope the deer have it in Nov-Dec by the way they are hitting it now. I’m gonna wait until at least mid august to plant next year....what are your thoughts Jeff? Anways, I ordered a ton of stuff from Northwoods including Brassica, tillish radish, Cereal rye rye grain, WHS forage blend and the fall forage blend. I would be planting it this week. Is there anything that I shouldn't be bothering to plant and just keep it for next year because I'm just too late? Or because I would be planting it all at once one would out compete the other making some of it a waste to plant? I am doing 3 1/3rd acre plots. 50lbs of rye per plot. And each plot doing half brassica/raddish and the other half the WHS and the fall blend. What do you think? Or should I plant all the other stuff this week and then do the rye in two weeks? Recommended to add Urea about a month after planting. Be sure to adjust poundage as Urea is hotter. 46-0-0 vs. normal 34-0-0. Best to apply before rain and make sure plants are dry as Urea will burn them if sticks to them.

Last year deer ate my brassicas to the ground but I more than doubled the size of my plots, and will be paying the farmer next to my plots to leave two acres of corn standing so hope that helps preserve them. Thanks again!

Hi Michael! Been layering rye over lots of seeds for decades...about 4 to 6 weeks AFTER planting the greens. So no, never mix the seeds together...but layering is perfect, especially when the tillage radish is 1/3rd of the blend, buckwheat is 1/3rd and peas are 1/3rd. Search "Layering Rye for Deer"...lots of my articles going back 8 to 10 years to tell you all about it 😊 Here is one from 2014... www.whitetailhabitatsolutions.com/blog/winter-rye-layered-food-plot-progression

Jeff, i just learned of hybrid brassicas from a company called Green Cover. Collards, turnips,and radish that regenerates as they are eaten, much like clover. I understand they are getting great reviews . Are you aware of these and wat are your thoughts? Apparently the seed was developed in New Zealand for the sheeping industry. Makes sense.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
The New Zealand varieties have literally been around for close to 25 years? All brassica continue to grow after being eaten or browsed, except for after the first frost. Then none of them grow. Collards (kale, canola, etc) are very unattractive to deer. Last year John snuck some of them in his brassica mix I didn't know about and we literally had to mow shooting lanes thru them during ML season because deer wouldn't eat them and the stems would get in the way of the shot. The cool thing is I've used and seem it all over the past 25 years of planting brassica. Again, all brassica regenerate after being eaten 😊 Just a marketing ploy...

We sight our guns in right next to our food plots. About 2 weeks before the season opens. We even have a gun table in the field to shoot off. We shoot in the afternoon and there are bucks and does in the food plots a few hours later.

Good morning! Off topic but..i have set up my square 40 using your methods. deer are sorta using my stand sight approach trails even tho i made them constricting and ending at my stand sights..i find tracks on them all the time and am concerned i will get busted if they use my trails. What can i do?
@carminemonaco5712
@carminemonaco5712 3 жыл бұрын
Make the trails you want them to use better i'd trim branches make it easy for them to navigate through there, make your access trail thicker so deer prefer their trail. You will always run into the problem of deer using your trails that is unavoidable.

Your trails should dead end at your stands...their trails should less to mock scrape I at every stand, waterholes if you have them, food plots, habitat changes, bedding areas. Deer will always use your trails...you just want to find every way to lower the % of use thru your improvements linking together...

Thanks for the video Jeff! Just curious what brand of glyphosate u use to spray. I have used the Farmworks 41% glyphosate to spray twice this year and it has done a good job. But now I've got some weeds/grasses growing up in my plot again due to it being 8 weeks or so since I sprayed last. I had planned to plant by now, like mid August, but it has been so dry I am trying to wait for some rain in the forecast. I am planting a brassica mix like u talked about in this video. So I guess my question is, would I be good to spray again with that Farm Works 41% glyphosate and then plant that brassica mix right behind it. I know u mentioned u can seed right after glyphosate but I am wondering if it would be okay since this is only 41%. Didnt want whatever else is in there to kill my seed/crop.
