The man runs from the law (for an arbitrary crime), becomes a mayor, has a chance to bury his past forever, and still he chose to confess rather than condemn that man. Men like this only come every once in a while.

Colm Wilkinson has a voice in broadway that can never be matched, or replaces. He is just so good at hitting every note, especially that last part when he says 24601
@Thunderbolt6fifty3 жыл бұрын
So much control of that powerful voice, he literally screeches to a halt at 2:43 😱
@cainliang83023 жыл бұрын
um, it's much harder to end a high note without screeching like that
@jamescopeland80503 жыл бұрын
@@cainliang8302 - What he does is intentional, because if you are using proper diction (musical theatre style) then the last word ("one") would be pronounced 'wah-nah'. When you're up that high in the register, it will be incredibly hard to hold pitch transitioning between the two (even for professionals), and it will be slightly drawn out. Instead Wilkinson opted to insert a vocal break to shorten that closing and add to the dramatics. Honestly it's quite a clever approach, but you'd need a hell of a lot of confidence and technique to pull it off properly.
@kenf3333 жыл бұрын
@@jamescopeland8050 Any way you try to explain it, it's obvious it wasn't done perfectly and Colm probably knows this too. It felt a little screechy at the end, and probably could've been done better.
@jamescopeland80503 жыл бұрын
@@kenf333 - It's definitely a stylisation, though perhaps not to everybody's taste. The same way that he choose to go straight into a sustained vibrato from the first count, rather than holding a single tone and then gradually falling into a vibrato near the end. It all adds to the dramatics of the piece - but it's all intentional nevertheless. Does it sound slightly hoarse? Yes, but what he is doing is very demanding and for the most part he holds a perfect pitch which is usually where most people struggle when they're right up there in their mix register. Quickly applying a lot more breath while loosening the lock on the vocal chords is what is allowing him to make that vocal break, but it's a decision he made to shorten it.
@kenf3333 жыл бұрын
@@jamescopeland8050 That is an accurate assessment I suppose.

French version: He thinks that man is me, This could be my chance. I have nothing to do, Other than to keep my silence. But I have struggled for so long, Built and invented so much. Only to give it up For a stray remorse? If I stay silent, I am damned, And if I speak, I am condemned, All of these people who work in the factory And who believe in me. Can I abandon them? I would be sending them back To nothing again. If I stay silent, I am damned. But if I speak, I am condemned. What to do? Can I betray this man damned by error? Let him fall into the depths of misfortune? This innocent who bears my face, Who goes to judgement in my place, What to do? Refuse to walk back into hell, Because I made my paradise on Earth? Cross out my past forevermore And bask in oblivion, What to do? How can I look into the mirror and see The face of a man who dares not look back at me, My soul belongs to God alone And none can claim it as his own, If this is a trial God sent me, Then it is decided for me! What to do? There's nothing to do! I am Jean Valjean! Here is the truth at last, Javert, An innocent was tried in my stead! Who am I? 24601!
