This is an extract from a documentary on modern advaita teachers that was broadcast on South African TV. It was entitled 'Who am I?' I think it was made around 2008. I contributed my opinions on Ramana Maharshi, Papaji and Nisargadatta Maharaj.

I know that feeling. I experienced it long time ago (although my "guru" was a little chemical something). Suddenly, all the stuff I'd read in the advaitic tradition was obvious and self-evident. And you're like, wow, it's always been this thing? And it's eternal and never goes away? And all this time I thought i was this person and I'd end up dying.

But it's hard to believe that everyone whose sense of self vanished following their close up encounter with Papaji would be feeling great. They might feel very unsettled or unnerved by the experience(I've had that experience, not like it's described here but when it amounted to a nervous breakdown the first time which was indeed traumatic and the second time awesome because it was at a ten day meditation retreat and I perhaps bonded with the teacher, Sogyal Rinpoche).

My experience is that it's natural to experience some disturbance because you're going to go through some root emotional state.. such as unworthiness... or terror.. Ramana remember went through terror.. or extreme fear of death. Usually that feeling arises because we're viewing the ungraspable and infinite from the perspective of a limited self.. but once one passes through the terror or whatever it is.. it all disappears as does the sense of limited self existence. But those episodes can be prolonged, like the perennial metaphor of someone hanging from the cliff ledge..all that needs to happen is letting go.. but that can be harder than it sounds because its letting go of oneself! Only grace can bring that about.. the ego isn't about to commit suicide haha This is why the guru who has gone through this to the other side is so valuable. If you trust them enough letting go into the unknown might happen. Which seems to have been your experience. I also had a very easy realization of no self while on retreat and then a very healing encounter with a well known advaita master. I was blissed out for a couple of years and all seeking just come to an end. However, to my dismay four years in this intense fear of death emerged and since there was some resistance it was a prolonged agony of a few months.. it seemed to be demanding the end of 'me'. I struggled to hold onto the very sense of existing at all. Then one night it came up very strongly i feared to close my eyes but i did, i just lay down and as soon as i closed my eyes i felt my subtle grasping all fall away and the whole universe disappeared into nothingness, no sensory experience.. no nothing, yet awareness still is. All kinds of subtle states arose and fell back into pure consciousness (over the course of several hours of waking state time haha), then it was like being in the presence of the Great Being and somehow remembering Oh its ME. From there it was like being reborn into eternity or unborn i don't know, i just know death had disappeared as a fear for good and its been 18 years since , there was just this infusion of grace and feeling lighter than a feather aa awareness of sensing reappeared and at that point the sound of a bird was there singing, but singing in ME. All was inside.. or there was no inside or outside and that's became a very natural state, this change in perceiving. Its all grace. I think Ramana said Self God Guru are all the same and i know that's true. But its a beautiful way of saying it. Though love of God we became fit to attract the Guru and the Guru's grace helps us realize the Self. What a splendid insight.
