But she really has an impact and presence. I'd say she was written better in the Villeneuve movie than the character in the original, he was good, but he was just a guy and didn't have the kind of scenes that made him memorable. With her interactions with Duncan, Paul and then how she does out calling the Maker to take out the Sadaukar when she does, it's the writing and performance that matter, not the gender.

Some interesting background on the author Frank Herbert: he was a U.S. Navy veteran of ww2. He served some of his time in north africa where he likely watched the tribesman of the desert region there. It is likely the influence for his model of the Fremen. Also the degeneration of the Fremen later on likely serves to represent the slow march of time on successful civilizations.

It's important to note that people turned away from thinking machines not because the machines themselves were inherently bad, but because certain people that used them had done so with malice and intent to enslave. This is important for the re-emergence of these machines later on in the series and for the progression of the philosophy that the author presents concerning technology. Also, I think it's neat that the first mentat law was tweaked a bit and used as part of Jamis' monolog for one of Paul's visions in the new film.

"Saffoil Juice?" i mean, that's not even subtle.. its the most common precursor for MDMA found in nature.. what i love most about dune is how organic and downright psychedelic it is at heart.. one would think it contradictory, the fantastical visions and dreams of our main characters.. anyone who has done DMT, or even Psilocybin and LSD, will attest, that experience is as real as anything else in our universe, maybe more so.. in any other novel it would be 'magic', but within 'Dune', the psychedlic angle further grounds the entire affair even more, it's really the only logical explanation for humanitys great steps forward in history anyways.. why are mushrooms illegal to This DAY in the USA.. oh, they're 'dangerous' all right, just not the way they tell you they are..

Mentats as presented in the Frank novels lack the all-consuming single purpose of other factions, such as the Sisterhood, Tleilaxu, and Space Guild. Peiter is described as twisted, but all Mentats are sociopaths by design; Peiter is a spy master though, and prefers to sacrifice people and use torture to achieve his goals. Always, it is efficiency first though. Thufir is exactly the same, only his preferences run in long term troop preservation and minimizing military losses. This has lead him to create a very loyal military base for Leto to use. I will need to look up this "twisted" reference though, because it goes across the grain of the Tleilaxu in general. While they are certainly immoral throughout the novels, they have a weakness of creativity: they only copy bits and pieces of people, with new variations only occurring by chance. There is an underlying flavor in the books for this, as they are always getting smaller as a race. This is a common effect when inbreeding is used over several generations. Brilliant video as always though :) I kind of hope they use that lip marking as a sort of badge, with some staining underneath, exposing the ritualistic feel of most of the Dune universe :)

Awesome dive into Mentats! The sapho stain in the Denis version looks like they drink it through a straw, or did at one time if traveling in micro gravity so they may now mark or tattoo themselves in the traditional stain of their fore bearers or use the tattoo to "hide" the stain from a straw. I see it as kind of like in The Expanse how "modern" hardcore OPA Belters tattoo rings around the base of their necks to mimic the scars the old Belters (like Anderson Dawes) got from wearing ill fitting space suits. I would just love to see their calculating nature and how they blend it with being human. It would be too easy to have another Vulcan or Commander Data doppelganger in the series, so the humanity Gilbertus showed even at the late stages of his training was pretty eye opening. I also thought it was one of the more clever and thought out story lines Brian and Kevin wrote to have the most free thinking machine in a stroke of irony create the most calculating human to pass down his machine "ancestry" where he saw and defended him as a father would a son.

I wonder how subtle the difference would be between normal and twisted Mentats. They ( and their clients) might be at a disadvantage if the normal Mentat could not factor in immoral or "twisted' data...so is it that they will only suggest moral solutions or strategies? Otherwise they would risk missing a lot of possible, and dangerous, scenarios. Which suggests there might not be much difference in the Mentat processing between the two...just in what is deemed acceptable output. Subtle indeed 🙂

I think I would make the distinction based on the metric that Mentats are trained with a humane underpining which lends itself toward advising against (or being disgusted by) historical tragedies such as the Holocaust or Gulags, but if a mentat sees the computation of those avenues as not only viable, but appropriate, they wash out.

The book throws up a huge moral dilemma in that the predictions for the future of humanity all show it collapsing into extinction... except for 'the Golden Path'. The golden path, however, requires a massive restructuring of the entire population and the way of life they had become accustomed to. The protagonist must choose whether to set this in motion even though it will result in billions of deaths and a period of total control unlike any that has gone before. Would a regular Mentat even see the potential solution? While Mentats are not usually required to deal with problems of this magnitude It is just a scaled up 'trolley problem'... They are supposed to be trained to be free from bias and prejudice and so the 'lesser of two evils' ought to be an available and ultimately logical option?. Well,.. it is only logical if the objective, extending human survival time, is clearly defined as prefered outcome!

@@GrahamMilkdrop Now that's a good point. Does that put the Atreides( Paul and Leto II) into the "twisted" Mentat category..or elevate them to "uber" my entat because of their expanded, kwisatch haderack, data set? It's definitely a trolley problem that resolved the problem by sacrificing the individual for the species survival..which is the natural evolutionary solution. Another throwback to the Butlerian Jihad maybe?
@GrahamMilkdrop
@GrahamMilkdrop 3 жыл бұрын
@@solospirit4212 Well, Paul pulled out and the book frames it as him not being willing to give up his humanity whereas Leto II was. I guess that means humanity as a quality is a weakness or logical deficiency..? Is it more sociopathic to choose to act in a way that allows the entire species to become extinct in order to save yourself from the judgement of others or to act in ways that will draw criticism and yet ensure its survival? It is optics, or filters, as you say. The jihad gives rise to disgust in society in the same way that WW2 has given rise to disgust of 'final solutions'! The golden path too will give rise to disgust of tyranny. Perhaps the lesson is that it is a cyclical inevitability that humanity is doomed to experience?

Question: Is it possible for humans to actually become Mentats like in Dune, sans the Sappho juice? I mean, take into account all of the mental feats real humans can perform: mental math/human calculator, photographic memory, speed reading, the "Mind Palace" from the modern Sherlock Holmes series (the ability to make mindscapes within one's own imagination), Nikolai Tesla's ability to make working models of inventions in his head such that the prototypes he built worked exactly like he thought they would, the ability to run mental simulations as presented in the book "Games You Can Play in Your Head by Yourself Right Now", and even the underappreciated use of logic and critical thinking. With all of these in mind, if a person were to practice all of them in an interconnected fashion, is it possible for a human being to become a "human computer", a Mentat, like in Dune? Bear in mind, I'm not going to count fringe abilities that are typically debunked when tested rigorously, such as ESP, precognition, and other "psychic" abilities. Nor am I including heightened intuition. These are not a part of the Mentat training in Dune and do not have the "computer like" qualities that Mentats train in. I'm asking about the possibility of Mentats, not Bene Gesserits.

I definitely drew inspiration from the David Lynch film on many of them, other times I drew from my reaction against certain of Lynch’s choices, for instance the Baron Harkonnen. Fenring was an almost kwizat haderach so he almost certainly would have had some mentat training plus his wife was Bene Gesserit so I think he would have been for sure but I can't remember, Elaine is the ruling loremaster on dune stuff though so I'll take her word for it.

@@NerdCookies I dunno about that. Paul's mentat training had nothing to do with him being a potential Kwizatz Haderach (which, frankly, would probably not even need mentat powers, what with being an oracle and all), but rather because Leto wanted his son to be a mentat Duke.
@thomasboyles9773

The core books do not directly describe Count Fenring's tutelage beyond the companionship of the Emperor. It seems most likely to me, a potential KH would be raised within the sisterhood, and the Bene Gesserit exhibit many of the talents of mentats through other means. It's possible he did have mentat training with the glimpses we see of his thoughts seeming more like Paul's than most, but it is not confirmed by Frank as far as I can tell, and not speculated by anyone Frank authored that I recall.

I was 11 when the Lynch film was released. The following summer it was on cable all the time. I enjoyed it, and in a couple years read the novel. I did not fully understand what and why Mentants were. Now that I do, the anticipation of seeing the new movie has been satiated by your lore videos. I would not mind seeing any subtle nods to Lynch's film in the new one concerning the Mentats. However, I want nothing of Lynch's changes to the Harkkonens in it. Those heart plugs freaked me out as a kid, and still hate that change from the book till this day!

I am a wee bit older, followed the same path of Movie, two years, read novel. The repugnant nature of the Baron is terrible in Lynch's movie, and Denis seems on track to repeat the mistake IMO. The Baron was ruthless and was obsessed with teenage boys, but I think the weirding way corruption is my greatest dislike from the Lynch movie. I really do not think of the movie and the novel as the same story though, just two stories with the same names in the story :)
