50 without question. Worldwide success, business ventures in virtually every aspect (games, movies, rap, boxing, etc), record breaking single and mixtapes, etc. 50 was unstoppable and as Joe said, dude literally beefed with every major NY artist from Murder Inc, to Nas, Terror Squad, etc. He survived all of that and his pockets were never impacted.

I'm goin Wayne and Ye for the scope and depth of influence. Aesthetically, we're living in a post Wayne landscape - dreads, tattoos (especially face tats) and lean were around, but he took that shit to the mainstream. Kanye brought alternative/pop sensibilities to rap in a way that was unprecedented. 50 was huge, and his ventures were diverse, but rap today looks and sounds like Wayne and Kanye.

Kanye made it acceptable to not be a street/gangsta rapper. Kanye didn't have the best run, but probably had an impact only surpassed by Pac and Em. What was acceptable in rap changed. Combined with the Internet/SoundCloud era of rap, pioneered by Soulja Boy of all people (in terms of marketing/promotion), Kanye is responsible for the current sound of rap.

Lil Wayne had the biggest. Wayne first went plat in I believe it was 98 then got really major in 03. 03 to 11 Wayne ran hip hop and nobody could touch him. Project after project. 1 or 2 mixtapes a year and then like every 2 years drop an album. He didn’t have a single bad project in that time except for that rock album. Not to mention he influenced a generation of rapper due to how he changed the game.

DMX. (98-2004) was the first rap artist to do things that had not been done before. Five consecutive number one albums, the first rapper to release two number one albums in the same year, and he did it with "street music", when "street music" was on its way out in rap. He did movies, and was the face of a ruff ryders movement that has not been duplicated to this day.

Keep in mind at this age I wasn't into listening to music at all - more into videogames. 50 cent changed that, everyone in my little town in South Africa was talking about this man... only other guy who came close was Eminem. 50 was massive, 'in da club' was the biggest radio single my country has ever heard.

50's run was amazing, last of his kind to be honest and had a truly unique run. Jay has had the longest sustainability. Kanye is always relevant(though his antics give him more buzz than his music). Kendrick might be on an all-time run. I don't think many rappers have started with that kind of momentum. He literally hasn't made a misstep. Cole even if his last album was boring is going on a Nas-type run. Chance is on a run. He might be on the most interesting run because he is so cross-cultural in a natural way. Went to his concert in ATL and it was the most diverse concert I'd ever been to. He's truly special. Drake is such a pop artist that he is facing the problems that they face too along the lines of if he doesn't watch himself he'll spread his sound and content to thin to where people will lose the feeling they felt when they first heard him. All that to say that he along with 50 are having amazingly unique runs. His because he is so calculating and doesn't move like a rapper. He moves like a pop star, from having other people write for him(even though he writes too) to the diverse styles of music he puts out.

I'm surprised of no bigger mention of DMX run from like 97/98-03... He came out and literally changed the entire landscape of hip hop and dropped 2 hip hop classic albums in the same year to start his run. He bucked that "Shiny Suit" trend that was over powering mainstream hip hop and he made that grungy gutter street shit mainstream. (full disclosure: I started writing this comment before the end when they FINALLY mentioned X lol)

Eminem had the best run in hip hop 1999-2004, Em was on TV for 24/7 literally on every channel and i'm not only talking about the music's channels, he impacted the whole world because he's the first white successful rapper who doesn't even try to be tough and was too honest and funny. He did his best albums which are :The Slim Shady LP (1999) The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) The Eminem Show (2002) Encore (2004) he also did two albums with D12 " the hottest group at the time" he did the best hip hop movie of all time " 8 mile in 2002 " .So 6 albums in 5 years total and a big movie and won a fucking oscar ..selling millions and millions of records how is this not the best run in hip hop? i mean he fucking signed 50 so if it wasn't for em's run we wouldn't see 50's !
@MalikMoorBeatz
@MalikMoorBeatz 6 жыл бұрын
This is very true but what counts out Em is That his music became less and less for the Hip hop community. At one point DJs were playing 30 mins sets of 50 cent and G-unit in clubs, house party's, in the streets then it got to the suburbs & the streets/ hip hop venues was still playing his music. I don't even hear Em records in backpack mostly white hip hop events. Em is arguably the most technical Lyricist but never dictated the culture like 50. Having people want to use your slang, dress like & change there style of music closer to yours is all factors when it comes to hip hop culture. This cant be just done by numbers. Number wise Macklemore beat Kendricks good kid mad city and won the Grammy. Em's one of the greatest ever non the less.

Drix Malone till this day we have channels that shows 2pac movies and documentaries like once a week lol, personally I’ve watched 2pac story a million times, so we know everything about him, also his music is still alive here, people love putting 2pac music and 2pac remixes on the streets or malls or stores, so basically we loved and knew hip hop because of him. Our channels and our streets loved 2pac too much that they don’t play Jay z or biggie or the east coast music that much because they feel loyal to 2pac lol, it’s like he is still alive and we want to support him. And also I think that 2pac is the realest we felt him unlike other rappers.

I completely agree. There was also the D12 albums, which no matter what people think, debuted at number 1 with barely any radio play. He put Obie and 50 up (which eventually) gave birth to G-Unit, everything he touched during his run turned to gold. For most of his career organizations where trying to censor him; lack of radio play couldn't stop him from selling.

In my personal opinion, nothing will EVER touch Ice Cube's run from '88 to '93. He was (and still is) untouchable. Living legend.

50 cent had his own video game... of course he had the best run this is not even for debate. Wayne was big too but didn't have the same impact as 50.

I can't believe Eminem was just a side note in this conversation. Relapse missed the mark but he came back strong doing 700k in a week with his 6th & 7th album. And at the peak of his career he did something that only one other artist in music history has done. Prince is the only other artist to have the #1 movie, album & song in the same week. If that's not the best run in rap history what is?
